Prologue (The Incident) See, no one really knows why I’m afraid of Zoe Collins. No one but me, Justin, and my yet-to-be-named savior. Everyone assumes it’s because she’s popular and has the power to make my life a living hell. It’s not. There’s a story behind it. One I’ve never told anyone. Not even Phoebe. It happened when Phoebe and I were in seventh grade. Zoe, the most popular girl in school, had recently become friends with Justin Leavens, the new eighth grader. Justin had moved to our school two months before the incident. He was taller than anyone else in the school, at least twice my size. He seemed to like anyone who challenged him so, of course, he fell for Zoe instantly. In truth, Zoe and Justin made quite the power couple. For the two months leading up to the incident, no one viewed our school as safe. Not even the teachers. Zoe, with her cruel words, and Justin, with his massive fists, could do about anything they wanted, even attempt murder. And with that, I begin my story. The incident occurred on a sunny day, one of the hottest days that year, May 21. My birthday. As tradition on the last day of school, the teachers had planned a field trip to Surf City. I don’t remember much of what happened after our arrival. I most likely spent the field trip following Phoebe around the beach hoping that, just once, I could be the confident one. I remember the end of the trip, however, like it happened yesterday. “Look out!” I hear somebody scream as a football goes
