assignment. I happen to believe that God has raised up so many churches in the inner cities in order to do what I have just articulated. We are already strategically positioned, just not in Kingdom Covenant like the New Testament church. Of course—it took them some years to adjust from a natural monarchial culture to a spiritual kingdom governed by the men and women who were anointed with the Holy Spirit. But that’s been 2000 years ago, what is our problem? This generation must master the love that Paul explained in 1 Corinthians 13 and become that perfect man in Ephesians 4:11, “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of …show more content…
However, Paul and Peter were the only two dominant forces in the book of Acts functioning as apostles. The gifts of the spirit however—weren’t limited to the apostles as we can clearly see the functioning of the gifts in those that started out in the Upper Room in Acts 2.
These gifts can be seen currently—especially since the Azusa Revival that the world witnessed in California in 1907 and ended about 1915. That revival produced major spiritual institutions that embraced the gift of the spirit—which was frowned upon and not widely known until this event. William J. Seymour and Charles Harrison Mason were the more prominent leaders of that movement for the first forty to fifty years who emerged as established apostles. They mentored people of all races as their spiritual fathers—which have influenced over a billion people in the world in one way of another.
The true spirit of an apostle is actually a seasoned elder in ministry who has the heart of God, and a fatherly spirit that sees every human being as a potential child of God. They only seek to raise up spiritual fruit (children) to further advance the kingdom of God on earth. If you read all of the epistles of Paul in particular, you will see the heart of a loving father to his children. The gift of an apostle is one who established order within the body and serve—not lord over. The top-down controlling spirit that is prevalent among church leadership
Acts of the Apostles chronicles the rapid advancement of the Gospel by way of the gift of the Holy Spirit. “The Holy Spirit in the Acts of the Apostles: The Charismatic Community in Mission” takes into account the narratives succeeding Pentecost including Spirit Baptisms from Samaria to Ephesus (Acts
While the goal of Christian education and discipleship is spiritual formation of the new believer into a true disciple who makes other true disciples, this concept has been watered down in the American church today by emphasis on programs instead of progressive spiritual growth in every member’s life. There are many
Statement # 1(From The Cradle, The Cross, and The Crown Chapter 8, Loc 10638 of 28382, 1st Paragraph) “There are several significant human agents, but there is one, and only one, major divine agent underlying the entire plot of the book of Acts: the Holy Spirit. For this reason, rather than identifying the book as presenting the “Acts of the Apostles,” it may be more accurate to say that at its heart are the “Acts of the Holy Spirit.” I believe that the book of Acts is a great depiction of how the Holy Spirit can and will move through dedicated people. Without the Holy Spirit, Paul and all the great men in the book of Acts are just great men.
A church whose pastor and others in leadership have failed to put in place a proactive plan for discipleship for Believers is usually a “growing” church — growing stagnant, growing cold, growing spiritually immature Christians, and eventually, many growing closed. Patte said, “There is much at stake in accepting or rejecting the challenge of discipleship…” When a pastor or a church makes a conscious decision to make discipleship of Believers a primary focus in their
Spiritual Gifts are special divine empowerments given to us through the Holy Spirit. These Gifts however are not for our own personal benefit, instead the main purpose is to equip us to be able to serve and glorify the Lord while Jesus continues His ministry though us. When we use our Spiritual Gifts to glorify the Lord we are contributing to the overall heath and growth of the church. 1 Peter 4:10-11 shows us that we have each been given a Gift by the Holy Spirit and when we use that Gift we find the strength we need to build up the Church. The Gifts of the Spirit are messages of wisdom, knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miraculous powers, prophecy,
Total Church: A Radical Reshaping around Gospel and Community by Tim Chester and Steve Timmis emphasizes the two overarching principles that govern the practice of church and mission, that is: Being gospel centered and being community centered, where the content of our message is the gospel, and the context of our message the Christian community. Only when those principles are put into practice does the Word is carried away, with the mission of the church being carried out and the mission of the church of making relationships a priority is carried out.
In 1974 Dulles published Models of the Church to address questions concerning ecclesiology-the study of the church. Many people believe that they know the meaning of the church, which is a place to become closer to God. However, there is more than what meets the eye when it comes to the Church, since it is a very complex organization. Dulles' book identifies and describes the different functions the Church possesses which Jesus Christ founded and continues to oversee today. He categorizes the models into five aspects: Church as institution, Church as mystical communion, Church as sacrament, Church as herald, Church as servant, and lastly his new model Church as community. In this
The passion of Pastor Charles gives revelation to the plight of the urban core community. The generational need for empowerment and enrichment is prevalent everywhere. Entire communities are economically, socially, and morally bankrupt. Where-by we find it to be resulting in a diminished value in the righteousness
It is also important to see their obedience Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem (acts 1:12) Jesus told them to return to Jerusalem and wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit, and that is exactly what they did. They heard what he had sad and responded to what Jesus told them to do, even though He was no longer physically present with them. This was major key in ushering in the power of the holy Spirit.
Essentially, the church should focus on both leadership and discipleship from within the church. According to Putman, “our churches are filled with diamonds in the rough, and when pastors and church leaders begin to take seriously our mandate to disciple our people, these leaders will emerge”. Putman refers to the
In the Gospel of Luke, Luke pronounces “all that Jesus began to do and teach until the day he was taken up, after he had given instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles…” (Act 1:1-2 CSB). However, Acts is the account of all that Jesus continued to do and to teach through His apostles by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Luke portrays the role of the Holy Spirit as being given to help accomplish the Great Commission throughout his book. Fernando provides a great outline of Acts when he states, “The first chapter records the promise of the Holy Spirit… the second his descent, and the rest… his work in and through the church.” It could be concluded that Luke’s portrayal of Pentecost demonstrates the larger narrative on how the Church
The various gifts of the Holy Spirit as listed in Scripture are conveyed according to the will of the Holy Spirit to every man for the eventual purpose of the edification and building up the church body.
The book of Acts describes how Paul was ministering in Antioch with Barnabas, when he was directed by the Holy Spirit to be released from his Church duties. The Holy Spirit had another assignment for Paul, and that was to go and take the Gospel more widely. Some believe that this notion came from the Holy Spirit through fasting and prayer. Paul began his first missionary in the town of Antioch. Throughout Paul’s first missionary journey he was accompanied by Barnabas and Barnabas cousin John Mark.
In his hardback titled The Church: Contours of Christian Theology, Edmund P. Clowney writes a systematic presentation about concerning the doctrine of the church. In chapter eight of his book, he describes the Marks of the Church. Clowney writes about the marks of a true church of Christ, which include the true preaching of the Word of God; the proper observation of the sacraments; and the faithful exercise of church discipline.
Their is much debate surrounding the use of the charismatic gifts in Acts. Many questions arise about how to use such gifts, and whether or not they can be used today in the first place. The debate regarding the continuation and the cessation of the spiritual gifts, the meaning of which we will clarify in a moment, is a relatively modern one. Although we read about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost in Acts, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the early church of the New Testament, history is more or less silent on this issue. It was not until the early
