Slavery in the Americas was widespread and differed from each location. The use and treatment of slave in Brazil especially has been the topic of discussion among historians for decades. Brazilian slave owners used slaves in their houses, on the streets, and on plantations. Slavery in Brazil has been debated by historians since abolition. Scholars have argued over the treatment of slaves, the extensiveness of slave use, and the slave trade. The arguments made by historians have changed throughout the 20th century and into the 21st. Three generations of historians lived in different worlds and therefore present competing assertions.
The first generation historians analyzed Brazilian slavery less than a fifty years after its abolition. These historians lived in the United States when race issues were not resolved. It was common the compare Brazil to the U.S. to figure out which slaves had it worse. Mary Wilhelmine Williams in “The Treatment of Negro Slaves in the Brazilian Empire: A Comparison with the United States of America” compares Brazilian slavery to slavery in the United States and focuses on the differences. Williams asserts that no slave “worked harder than the slave stevedores at Rio, Bahia, and other ports” Williams argues that the housing conditions, food, and clothing was similar to the U.S. She claims that “slaves were given decidedly more chance for mental development” and were able to become free much easier than in the United States.
