The TRiO program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro has helped me tremendously in my college career. I was a member of the TRiO program at East Wake High school in Wendell, NC before entering college. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to be a part of the TRiO program here at UNCG. Upon entering college, I was very nervous and anxious that I would not be able to adjust to the fast pace atmosphere of college. I felt unsure of myself and doubted by capabilities as a student. However, I soon learned that my nervousness subsided with the help of the Student Support Services and TRiO program faculty. The TRiO program’s faculty has assisted me in enhancing my organization skills, studying habits, leadership capabilities,
I believe some of the skills necessary to be outstanding when working in student support services are having strong interpersonal skills, compassion, care and respect for individuals. When students are lacking self-confidence a student support service provider can assist in motivating and inspiring them to thrive and excel. A student support service provider must be kind, compassionate and sensitive to the needs of others. Students need to feel cared for and respected as an individual. The student support service provider should be a compassionate and enthusiastic person who has a strong desire to motivate and inspire students with diverse backgrounds, especially those with learning disabilities. Also, it’s vital to have good time management
Social issues and skills needed by students for their future: Some of the social issues are Racism, Sexism, poverty, immigration issues, child labor and current economy. Skills that are required for the bright future of students are effective communication, leadership quality, emotional intelligence, digital literacy, team working, and problem solving skill, entrepreneurship and global citizenship. They should have some work experience and involved in some volunteer work and co-curricular activities.

The extraordinary Mexican migration that delivered millions of immigrants to the United States over the past century is one difficult to ignore. At times the border did not exist, however in more recent times the US has created policies to curb Mexican migration into the states. The relationship the US has with it’s southern neighbor has always been a complicated one. Both countries have a relationship like no other two countries in this world, in which depending on the time period is a give and take relationship. Each group of immigrants have their own story about coming to America, but none quite like the stories of Mexican immigrants. The Bracero Program, planted the seeds of Mexican migration between 1942 and 1964. An estiminated 4 million of Mexican men were contracted to work in the United States as part of a war effort called the Bracero Program.Of the millions U.S. Mexicans, who self-identified as being of Mexican, trace their family’s arrival to the United States to a Bracero.Cheap and foreign labor has always played an important role in the development of agriculture in the United States. And for the first time, an official program for migrant farm workers was developed and Mexican ‘Braceros’ - Bracero loosely translates into “arms”- flocked to the United States in order to harvest crops. The most important concept to understand about the Bracero Program, was that these men were not seen as humans, but instead as commodities that should be

While attending California State University, Long Beach, as an undergraduate in 2011, I mentored students who were members of the program TRIO Student Support Services (SSS). The program SSS provides academic support services for first-generation college students striving to earn a four-year degree. The program fostered my passion for diversity in higher education. As a member of the program, I mentored Hispanic and Black American college students. Secondly, I mentored students who experienced social and academic challenges. The program provided me a unique opportunity to mentor a sexagenarian. For instance, I mentored

Dr. Charleyse Pratt serves as the assistant vice president of multicultural affairs and engagement of Cleveland state university. In this role her primary responsibilities include coordinating Learning Communities Programs and Partnerships at Cleveland State as well as directing initiatives for the Cleveland Transfer Connection.
