He claimed his share of the treasure and returned back to his hobbit-hole after the long adventure. Although he lost respect from his neighbors for going on an adventure; Bilbo Baggins’ experience in the quest changed his character for the better and changed how looked at life.
II. Theme
The theme of The Hobbit is discovering of one’s identity in the world. Tolkien focuses on Bilbo Baggins as he transforms from a sheltered hobbit into a courageous hero. He showed the process of maturation as Bilbo finds his sense of purpose. Bilbo changed drastically from when he first started and helped him survive his ordeals.
In the beginning of the novel Bilbo encountered a mysterious wizard named Gandalf. At first he tried to be kind towards Gandalf, but once after Gandalf mentions he’s looking for an adventurer, Bilbo became nervous and uncomfortable. He showed his disapproval of adventures by saying: “We are plain folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can’t think what anybody sees in them” (Tolkien 4). Tolkien showed Bilbo’s opinion on things that were “unexpected” such as an adventure. Bilbo tried to get rid of Gandalf by ignoring him; he later said, “Good morning! We don’t want any adventures here, thank you! You might try over The Hill or across The Water” (5). Bilbo feared the world because he didn’t know much about it; he did not want to get involved in something so strange to him.
