The Wasteland project had a big impact on the people who were a part of it. It used the materials that were around the wasteland and used the people who were and are living there. Instead of using fancy or nice materials, and professional models. In the video, they said that all the money went to the people who lived in the landfill. I have a hard time believing that and there are a few issues that I have with this project. First money is not everything, what was the motive, and what happened after. Money is not everything. There are so many other things that could used to help. For instance, they could have taught them a trade. For example, they could have taught them to sow or something that would be better to earn money in their culture.

I found the videos, F.A.T. city to be extremely interesting and informative. I believe that the main message of the F.A.T. city videos that we must take the time to understand the learning disabled child and use our knowledge to create appropriate lessons, as well as, use the best practices in our teaching. I feel the most beneficial way to share this information with my colleagues would be to have them participate in the activities presented in the video. I was surprised and intrigued by many of the points during the video, but following points were the most interesting to me:
Lucy Walker, director of the film Waste Land, opens up the narrow views of those who live in first world countries to the harsh realities of poverty by traveling to the most extensive landfill in Brazil called Jardim Gramacho. Released in 2010, the viewers follow renowned artist Vik Muniz to his hometown where the Catadores pick through trash to retrieve recyclables for a living. Walker`s purpose of exposing the picker's seemingly undignified work and showing the real power of art is fulfilled using an informative, inspiring, and heartbreaking tone, targeting those who take their economic standing for granted or believe they cannot make a difference using their talents and abilities. Through the use of interviews and camera shots, the film
In the film Precious Knowledge it showed an Ethnic Studies class in Tucson, Arizona. The main focus of this Ethnic Studies class is to help minorities see that they are more than their stereotypes. It help them recognize that they can graduate highschool and go to college. It displays the classes trying to assimilate to the american culture, but as the film continues it displays several government officials believing that they are trying to maintain pluralism and not assimilate. The government officials want them to assimilate to the american culture, but do it “the american way” not the way they are doing it.
The question must be asked, when did food waste become an issue? Jonathan Bloom writer of, Jonathan Bloom’s American Wasteland: How America Throws Away Nearly Half of Its Food (and What We Can Do About It) explored this question. Bloom’s book, discussed in Stacy Slate’s article “Who's To Blame for All We Waste? We Are. A Review of American Wasteland,” describes how our change in respect for food happened over many centuries. In the 1700s people were just starting to make settlements, so their goal was to live as simply as they could. They only grew food that was needed. In the 1900s, the Great Depression and World War II resulted in non-existent food waste. Waste was considered unpatriotic. By the end of World War II, food was cheaper because
Despite the new discoveries in medicine whether it is a new vaccine or antibiotic, the most basic components for disease prevention and death in humans depends on a good nutrition and access to clean water. The RX for Survival: Back to the Basics video depicts how both an inadequate nutrition and malnutrition can impaired a child’s physically and developmentally. It is estimated that over 100 million children in the world are undernourished and causing the death of more than “one third” of the children (WHO). Furthermore, the consumption of contaminated water, which carries disease organism, exacerbates the mortality rate among children.
Despite the fact that animal crush videos are illegal, Stevens still participated in the unlawful selling of these videos which depicted animal abuse via the form of dogfighting.
Tar Creek is an area that has been left behind by the American industry. After being mined for so many years, and literally they left nothing behind but dust. I believe this film was made to exploit the issues that we have in our country that go missed. So many times we over look our problems in our own country, caused by our government. The government gave this land to the Quapaw Indians and then bullied them to allow it to be destroyed by greedy business men which the government backed. To add to the issue children were hurt by it, families taken from their homes, land destroyed, and the government still ignores the situation.
The Graeters video relates to what we have learned about business and change by showing us that change within a business is virtually inevitable. As times change and technology becomes more apparent, business must also change or use valuable resources to become more efficient to keep up with, or become more successful than the surrounding competition. Graeters experience with change was a bit different than that of other companies. Before technological innovations brought about the refrigerator and modern ice cream machines ice cream was a delicacy, it was something people couldn’t get every day or whenever they desired. In the times after though, many companies began to mass produce ice cream making thousands of gallons per day. Graeters
I trust my gut instincts and right now it's screaming that something doesn't smell right about this organization and viewing this video of YangWan just throwing the dogs out of the truck has me even more suspicious.
City Dump is a film that explains the City College of New York scandal, where players were curving the game spread and being paid for it. A majority of the interviews conducted in the film were not those of whom were on the team and partook in the scandal, but rather journalists and other players who weren't part of it. This is accepted a legitimate criticism of the film. In order to portray the effect this incident had on the player, interviews with them would be appropriate. But, it makes sense that the filmmakers did not interview them because it could’ve potentially hurt the case they made in 1951. Additionally, they didn’t want to make a bad situation worse.
“Kony2012.” Everyone shared the viral Kony 2012 video on his or her facebook wall. #StopKony was seen several times on everyone’s twitter feed. People hung up Kony2012 posters at their schools and grocery stores. Stop signs were vandalized with Kony2012 stickers, but what is Kony2012? Why was everyone posting about it? It’s 2014 now. What happened?
There is a video that shows police officers conducting an investigation on a lake. They cannot seem to find what they are looking for around the lake, so they think that it may be inside the lake. A diver then goes into the lake and what he finds is quite shocking. He finds cinder blocks with chains tied around them. He then discovers that someone was chained up and thrown into the lake, but he could not find the body. He looks all around the lake and then he sees the body right in front of him. It was quite creepy to watch.
The movie wasteland was good and interesting. I thought it was interesting how he used things that was found in the garbage to create so many great portraits of these garbage pickers. Wile watching the film that took placed in Brazil I think more in Rio it was interesting to see the aount of trash in a landfill. It made me think about how our environment is being affect and how some individuals health might be affect about this amount of garbage. The individuals that he showed in the film have to make a living off of picking up recycleable resources for the garbage landfill. The notion that “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” was what this film seemed to be focus around. The material that came for the garbage help to turn something
Part 1 - In American author's 2009 book, The Help, the primary thesis is the relationship between Black maids and white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s. The story is really told from three perspectives, Aibileen and Minny are Black women, both maids, and Skeeter is the nickname of Eugenia Phelan, daughter of a prominent White family. Skeeter has just finished school and hopes to become a writer. In general, the relationship between the Black maids and the White employers is six sided: On one side we have the White employers who have three views: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that can range from extreme scorn and bias to kindness regarding race; 2) Their public persona that must have the "proper" attitude about Blacks and "the help," and 3) Their employer attitude, which is condescending and parental. The Black view also has three segments: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that usually range from understanding not all Whites are the same and an extreme love and empathy for the White children for whom they care; 2) The public persona that is deferential, polite, and stoic to their White bosses; and 3) Their attitude and view among the Black community, which usually separates the "poor and ignorant but rich" White souls from the Black view of family and common sense. All in all, the relationship is contentious, phony, and based on economic advantage.
