The Wisdom of Sirach: Wisdom for Every Minute of the Day The Book of Sirach is one of seven wisdom books including Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Wisdom, Song of Songs, and Psalms. The Book of Sirach is referred to by different names. In Greek manuscript it is referred to as “the Wisdom of Jesus, the son of Sirach” or “the Wisdom of Sirach”. (“Ecclesiasticus”, Catholic Encyclopedia) Latin writers refer to it by several other names but the most commonly used name is probably the “Book of Ecclesiasticus” which means “the book of the church”. The reason it got the name “the book of the church” is because it is the most used wisdom book in liturgy or church services. (“Sirach – Introduction”, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) The purpose of this paper is to discuss several interesting parts of the Book of Sirach.
The Book of Ecclesiasticus is known as the longest of the deuterocanonical books of the Bible. (Catholic Encyclopedia) Deuterocanonical books are second canon books. Books that are in the Hebrew Bible are called protocanonical and those not found in the Hebrew Bible are called deuterocanonical.
As the title “Wisdom of Sirach” says, the principal and main theme of the book is wisdom. The book has 51chapters. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia there are two main views regarding the manner which the book was written. First, some scholars argue that the book basically has one purpose
