Cheris Kramarae once said, “Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings.” According to Merriam-Webster, Feminism is defined as “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities” The ideal female character is normally depicted as weak and vulnerable in comparison to men, but truly it is not the case. In L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, the main character, Dorothy, is portraying the role of an independent female as opposed to the typical damsel in distress. She unintentionally kills the Wicked Witch of the Eest and is praised as a heroine in the land of Oz. Dorothy is the complete opposite of the ideal female character. She is portrayed as self-reliant, strong and peaceful all throughout the story. In …show more content…
When captured by the Wicked Witch of the West, she orders a pack of great wolves to tear her and her companions to pieces. The Wicked Witch of the West says, “one is of tin, one of straw; one is a girl and another a Lion. None of them is fit to work, so you may tear them into small pieces” (Baum 87). Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Lion are all depicted as weak and unable to work. However, this completely defies how Dorothy is portrayed as powerful and self-reliant throughout the story. The witch labels her as just a girl, when she really is much more. She is going on this journey enduring several obstacles and companions to finally get herself back home to Kansas. This shows her true dedication and care for not only herself, but others. Lastly, Dorothy shows her assertiveness and courageousness when she kills the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy cries, ‘You are a wicked creature’…This made Dorothy so very angry that she picked up the bucket of water…dashed it over the Witch, wetting her from head to foot… The witch cries, ‘In a minute I shall melt away” (Baum 96). Dorothy defies all odds as she rescues and saves herself, yet again. She shows her independence and courageousness as she kills the Wicked Witch of the West and frees the people again. She defies the ideal helpless damsel in distress and creates a strong independent female character that is the basis of this story. Without Dorothy as the heroine of this story, the land of Oz would be doomed.

Inherit the Wind is a play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee that depicts the infamous Scopes Trial. The real names of the persons involved in the case were changed, however, the play recounts the same story. One journalist in the story, E.K. Hornbeck, who is closed-minded, a hypocrite, and very cynical proves that the religious community of Hillsboro is not the only one to be intolerant.
Dorothy and her friends finally got to Emerald City. They finally got to see the Wiz and he told them that he would not grant any of their wishes unless she killed the wicked witch of the West. Dorothy and all of her friends were really disappointed. Eventually, Dorothy and her friends went to see the wicked witch of the West and the witch was very mean to them. The witch really wanted Dorothy’s slippers but she refused to give them to her. Dorothy is starting to get discouraged because the witch seemed to be more powerful than she was.
Dorothy start on her way down the yellow brick road and meets three important characters. First she meets the scarecrow with no brain. He represents Farmers and agricultural workers who are ignorant of many city things but honest and hardworking. Farmers were string supporters of the populist movement and the scarecrow ends up being a strong supporter of Dorothy throughout the entire film. Next they meet the tinman. The tinman represents industrial workers. He is a lumberjack whose body has been replaced with metal. This represents how many workers had been dehumanized and viewed as only a means to make money. Finally they meet the cowardly lion. When they first meet the lion he does his best to scare them but ends up being afraid of them. He tells them he wants to go the emerald city so the wizard can give him courage. He represents politician William Jennings Bryan. Bryan was a populist presidential candidate and the out spoken leader of the populist movement. He had been criticized as being a coward for not supporting the U.S. and its decision to go to war with Spain. Bryan wanted to get into Washington so he could change American politics. This reflects the lion wanting to go to the emerald city to get his courage from the wizard. Along the way they run into the wicked witch of the west. She tries to stop them from getting to the emerald city.
The role gender holds in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is not one many were familiar with at the time it was written. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz reverses the accepted gender roles of its time, women taking control, even helping men in times of need. This idea is depicted throughout the entire novel, affecting almost every character introduced. This novel essentially questions and challenges the accepted beliefs on the roles of gender in the society at that time, showing how things would be if roles were different. With this, through a description of the characters, you can see who was empowered by Baum and who held an inferior role.
The Wizard of Oz is a classic known by all. The plot is fairly simple. Poor bored Dorothy is sick of her normal boring life on her Aunt and Uncles farm in Kansas and decides to run away to a more exciting life. Her plans are changed when she meets a fortune teller who convinces her to go back home. Unfortunately, as she is headed back home a horrible storm starts and she and her dog Toto are blown away, along with her house. When she lands, she comes outside to see that she has landed on a person with red shoes. She is met by tiny people and a witch called Glinda who tells her that she has landed on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy tells Glinda she wants to go home, and Glinda tells her if she follows the yellow brick road she will end up in the Emerald City where the Wonderful Wizard of Oz can help get her home.
Judy garland who is purportedly named Dorothy dale in the move the wizard of Oz is the main protagonist in most of the Oz novels. Frank Baum created the fictional character who has been idolized in the American movie culture because of the character she has played in most movies, books, animations, games and on TV. At first she appeared in the novel the wonderful wizard of Oz which was created in 1900 and thereafter, she was able to reappear in most of the sequels showing her importance in various adaptations, notably, in the 1939 film named the wizard of Oz (Pfefferman, 2013). in the movie, the wizard of Oz, she acts as a young orphaned girl from one of the farms in Kansas which was owned by uncle henry and aunt Em. Life in the farm is considered to be composed of hard work and it provided little opportunity for Dorothy to have excitement in the farm. She is able to express her desires of exploring what was beyond Kansas through the use of a wishful song of what might be lying at the other end of the rainbow. One of the richest people in the town gets a permit of obtaining her dog, Toto, and she tries to save her life by running away. She changes her mind and decided to go back home when a tornado drops from the sky and everything changes radically in the movie.
Lord of the Flies is often claimed to be an allegory of modern society. While this is true, Golding’s intentions in writing this novel are much deeper. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies provides an enlightening insight into the true nature of human beings; along with why people refrain from acting upon the evil that resides within them. He presents these ideas through symbolism within the novel and it proves effective in many ways. Through symbolism, Golding can unfold the excellent plot of his novel, while subsequently sharing his ideas on the relationship of mankind and society. Golding uses the beast, the conch shell, and Piggy’s glasses to symbolize the human impulse towards ‘savagery’ and the social constructs put in place to prevent it.
Danielle Paige’s fantasy story, “Dorothy Must Die,” takes place in the land called Oz, which is known for people that have a good or a wicked side. When facing someone of which is wicked but is doing a good deed, most people do not realize that in this world there is no difference in the two. During the journey of a girl from Kansas, she discovers along the way that someone of which used to be good, is now filling the land with her wickedness. One theme that this story proposes is whether it’s wicked but good, or good but wicked. One another can change into the other because they’re no fine lines between the two.
The main character of Dorothy Must Die is named Amy Gumm. Amy Gumm is the protagonist of this story while Dorothy Gale is the antagonist. Amy Gumm changes in the story from being sarcastic, scared at what was going on and not having very many friends, to being tough, brave and still very sarcastic. Amy does the right thing when the wizard of Oz tells her to kill the Tin Woodman by removing his heart. Although Amy knows it's not the good thing to do, she knows that it's the right thing to do. Amy also does the right thing when she sees a wingless monkey tied to a post with a sign that stated For The Crime Of Sass. Amy was very surprised that the beloved Dorothy would punish a monkey for sass. Amy freed him from the post even though she knew she would be punished. I can identify with Amy when she shows how kind she is with the monkey. She freed him and continued to stick by his side through the first few chapters of the book, even though a munchkin named Indigo, who was helping Amy, told her not too. One character who was a big part of Dorothy Must Die was Mombi. She is the leader of the Revolutionary Order
Imagine you are a lawyer tasked with an impossible case, and everybody in your community is against you, but still there is a shred of hope you cling to. What might that be you ask? That to which you cling are your morals. In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch had been given the Tom Robinson case, where a black man was convicted of raping a white woman. As a single father of two children, he continues to reinforce his values throughout the trial and during his daunting task of raising his children. In To Kill A Mockingbird what Harper Lee suggests about the nature of morals is that you should try to stand up for what you believe in even if people oppose or reject your ideals. Even when faced with an insurmountable opposition you should stand up for your morals because in the end if your don't follow your beliefs you are just contributing to the problem. We should try to create a voice for what we believe in and impress that upon the next generation so they can continue to exercise their beliefs to make the world a better place.
The children’s book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, which was published in 1900 by L. Frank Baum is conceded as a classic story that many people love. The book gained so much popularity and that led to the release of the film adaptation, “The Wizard of Oz” in 1939. Even though the film adaptation was very similar to the original book, there were some changes in the main character (Dorothy) and the roles of the witches, which were ineffective and effective respectively. First, I will talk about Dorothy’s character and her quest to get back home. Second I will talk about the roles of the witches.
In The Wizard of Oz, the ordinary world and the beginning of the adventure are presented with stunning visual effects. Dorothy, the protagonist, is shown struggling in her ordinary world. She is confronted by the mean neighbor Miss Gulch who wants to take away Dorothy’s dog Toto and give him to the animal control authorities because of Toto’s bad behavior. Dorothy reacts childishly with a temper tantrum, begging her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em not to let Miss Gulch have her way. She confronts Miss Gulch when she tries to take Toto, saying, “You wicked old witch! Uncle Henry, Auntie Em, don't let 'em take Toto! Don't let her take him -- please!” (The Wizard of Oz). In a fit of temper, Dorothy decides to run away because she thinks that it is the only way she can protect her dog from Miss Gulch. The plot picks up the story of Dorothy’s life at a rather bleak point. Dorothy is portrayed as powerless and directionless and she does not appreciate the gifts she has in her family and life. Her character flaws and areas of growth are clear from such behavior. She seeks to be the leader of her own life but she lets temper get in the way of her enacting effective change. Furthermore, in her decision to run away Dorothy shows that she does not appreciate those who love her or the blessings of her loving home.
Picture a child sitting in front of a television watching the Wizard of Oz. To them, it is an assortment of magical beings, a land filled with wonderful places, with varieties of different colors. They do not picture it as something with far more meaning than just a plain fairytale. On the other hand, gender/feminist critics have been able to analyze the Wizard of Oz as well as Wicked, in order to find a more elaborate meaning behind the story itself. They have discussed what lies behind the story when it comes to the issue of sexism and masculinity towards the book itself as well as the characters. There are many concepts as well that help to further explain feminism and gender criticism. The four concepts that will be discussed
In William Golding's novel Lord of The Flies he shows how evil exists inside of everyone, it is the situation a person finds themselves in allows evil to grow or be controlled. The three boys are an example of this. Jack who only thinks about himself he wants everything immediately which makes his evil grow. Ralph, however, thinks about others but at times can be selfish which can make his evil grow, but Ralph tries to keep his evil at bay. Simon on the other hand only thinks about others, he does not think about himself which stops his evil from arising. Therefore, control of the situation is control of evil self.
Many of the farmers from the West blamed their problems on the wealthy and industry. Later on in the text, Dorothy meets the Good Witch of the North. The Good Witch represents a Northern electorate who had supported populism. The Good Witch sends Dorothy to go to the Wizard of Oz, down the yellow brick road to Emerald City, who has the power to send her back to Kansas. The Good Witch also gives Dorothy the silver shoes, which also serves as protection. This can relate to the Bimetalism vs. Gold Standard. I say this because Dorothy shoes are silver and she is sent to go down the yellow brick road, which can be seen as gold bricks. This can be known as gold money. In this time, it was clear that silver vs. gold was important to the farmers involving the economy. The silver was supposed to be available for the working class, and would increase the amount of money for the working class. In the text, Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Cowardly Lion. The Scarecrow represents the western farmers, and how their hardships and troubles from inflation caused them to have doubts and problems with their money. The Tinman represents the American worker who mostly has populist views. He also represents how the worker felt dehumanized and was helpless. In addition to this, the Wicked Witch of the East put a spell on him that every time he swung his axe, he would chop a piece of him off. This would make his body smaller, in relation to his work being minimized by the
