Society’s expectations of women now and in the past cause a huge controversy and conflict amongst women. The main three female characters of the novel The Great Gatsby have many conflicts with society and what is expected of them as a female in the 1920s. They are expected to be the server of man and to not be their own person, but this was a conflict with them. Although Myrtle, Daisy, and Jordan show case their conflict with society, they negotiate that conflict with their personality and their mannerisms.
One of the main characters in the Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan was a charming woman who was visually pleasing to men. She was married to Tom, a rich and powerful man, for his money. Tom and Gatsby are at Tom's house, when they both express a certain feeling that her voice brings upon them.
The effects of greed play a significant role in The Great Gatsby, and Daisy Buchanan fits that theme. Daisy uses people for her own benefit and puts herself first before anyone else. Daisy Buchanan is Jay Gatsby’s long lost love, with the two not seeing each other in around five years. Daisy left Gatsby whenever he went into the war because she didn’t want to wait for him to come back from the war. She went ahead and married a man named Tom, who is very wealthy because he inherited old money from his ancestors.
Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby is a very inquisitive story and leaves many people questioning small details. In this novel, death, love and loyalty are key elements. In the summer of 1922 strangers had met once again feeling the love they felt years ago. Gatsby and Daisy were once lovers until war came between them and their love came to an end. Years passed and Gatsby and Daisy met once again feeling the same about each other but not being in the same positions. Gatsby is now rich and lives in a fancy house while Daisy is now married and has a child with Tom Buchanan. Not all partners are loyal and in this novel Tom is cheating on Daisy with another woman named Myrtle who is married to George Wilson. Daisy knowing about his infidelity
The 1920’s was a time when the United States economy had a 42% increase (Amadeo). The United States had this increase in the economy due to industrial factories being built, and new inventions being made, which raised wages. Women during this time period gained many rights, but were still not as equal as men. African Americans were discriminated against and segregated during this time. Fashion in the 1920’s was brand new. Women had new styles of clothing and new hairstyles, and men started wearing athletic gear. In the 1920’s, and in the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald wealth, women and racism, and fashion were big social beliefs that impacted lives in the United States.
The 1920’s was the first wave of feminism, and it has been a problem throughout the United States since then, however in The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald purposely overlooks it perhaps due to his personal experience with women who weren’t the best to him. Feminism refers to “a series of political (series of actions to reach goals) for good changes on issues such as (rights of people to have children as they choose), domestic violence, motherhood leave, equal pay, women's right to vote, (unwanted repeated sex-related comments, requests, bullying, etc.), and sexual violence”. In this case the marginalization upon women is symbolized indirectly and reveals the impurity about women throughout the novel. Daisy and Myrtle were treated like literal animals throughout the novel and there was actual symbolism that furthered that idea. Daisy Buchannan is the main female character, having a romantic relationship with both Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan. Myrtle Wilson is a woman who is married to a hardworking man ,George Wilson, but she remained unfaithful throughout the whole novel. Lastly, Jordan Baker is probably the least mentioned woman but had an equally important role as the other few. Fitzgerald used the development of these three women to further the plot and theme of the book and show the treatment and role of women in that society at that time. Both Daisy and Myrtle were seen as gold diggers, having all their attention focused on material possessions and basing their love off of
The Roaring Twenties was a time of change in America. Women began to vote in elections and dress provocatively. Sporting events were on the rise and modern products led to changes throughout the household and the stock market (Schmarge). As seen in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, drinking, smoking, and partying was apart of everyday life. Many say that living in the 1920s was the American dream.
By the same token, the relationship between the sexes is something rather sad. The men are dominant and are the head of the household. They are the ones in business, and the ones working for a living (if they can afford to do so.) However, the women still seem to get in the way of men. In fact, they seem to either lead to their demise or lead to their depression. In the book, The Great Gatsby, all seems to be well at first; the men are doing their deeds while the women party. However, things soon turn awry. Daisy’s flirting and resolution to be with Jay is what kills him in the end. Believing that Gatsby was driving and that Myrtle’s lover was Gatsby, Mr. Wilson seeks his revenge and he shoots Gatsby in Gatsby’s pool. “He was crazy enough

The Jazz age or the Roaring 20’s was a vital time for women in America. One reason this was a vital time was because on August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote. This was also a vital time because America was changing from a more conservative country to a liberal one. The female characters in Fitz Gerald’s’ The Great Gatsby embodies the way women were back in the 1920s. Women before the 1920s were only seen as caregivers. In this story, the women were the total opposite of that. They changed from things such as clothing, smoking, and dancing. Daisy, Jordan, and Myrtle were all portrayed as the “New Woman”. There was Daisy who married into money but had a secret lover. There was Jordan who was this independent woman
Since society has existed, women have been known as different from men. For the longest time, women have been known as the “weaker sex” when compared to the male. There purpose, especially in the olden days is to obey and please the men. However nowadays there seems to be a more equality between the two genders. But even today discrimination between male and female takes place all over the world. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, you can see a lot of discrimination between the two sexes. The story takes place in the 1930’s and it has a bad view on women, they just got the right to vote for presidents, mayors, and senators. However most men thought that the women should only stay home and raise children, that they should not be involved in politics, and their ideas were not valuable. Women were treated as “house slaves” at times when all what they did all day, every day, was work around the house trying to improve the living for their husband and kids.

Lust and infatuation are primary motivating factors for a man intending to woo a girl’s heart, but what should a man do when the woman of his dreams desires fortunes and wealth that he lacks? In 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald crafted The Great Gatsby with a focus on women with high expectations. During this period women gained rights to vote with the passing of the 19th amendment, and as a result, they surged with self expression and confidence. In turn, a mediocre man’s chance of obtaining the woman of his dreams became slim. Fitzgerald’s theme about male and female relationships in The Great Gatsby focuses on the difficulties of winning over a woman’s heart, especially with needy women of his generation.
