Nicole Hedrick The Working Mother A working mother is a woman who is obviously a mother and works outside the home to provide income. These women besides working outside the home also perform duties at home in raising their children. The term working mother has changed over time as generations have changed and the world itself had changed. For decades, the "stay-at-home mother" has been a recognized phenomenon. The stay-at­ home mother has often stayed out of the labor force to raise her children while her husband worked full time to support the family. As women with children joined the labor force in greater numbers throughout the mid-20th century, the amount of mothers who were out of the labor force caring for their children while their husbands was in the labor force decreased. The question that comes to mind is all of this for us? Now we look at everything and women have come far from the past to not being allowed to work, to be in the military, and now some of us are higher paid then the men in some companies. What made this changed and how did it all start. With it already being said once, stay-at-home mothers are a twentieth century wonder that reached its peak during the post-World War II period as a result of multiple social forces (May 1988). Economic wealth during the period following World War II resulted in the wages of many married men being more than capable to support a family (Levy 1998). Cultural values
