The discovery of oil reserves in the Persian Gulf marked the beginning of the evolution of Iran to a modern industrial nation. (Document A) As the demand for crude oil skyrocketed, the wealth generated by Iran soared. The distribution of this wealth became a matter of contention. Additionally, with the transformation of Iran to an industrial nation, the introduction of western culture posed a problem for the strict Islamic community. The Iranian Revolution was a result of the economic, political, cultural and religious conflict that occurred within its borders.

Civil unrest occurred in 1978 with SAVAK putting down the protesters of the Shah. (Document B) The Shah became a dictator with his influence felt in all sections of Iranian life. In 1975 “he abolished the multi-party system of government so that he could rule through a one-party state.” (Document C) He stated that anyone not in compliance was a traitor and could either go to prison or leave the country.
Although it seemed from the outside world that Iran was making great progress, within the country the conservative Shiite Muslim population, which represented about ninety percent of the people, would not accept the liberalization of Iran. There was opposition to the Shah because of the changes in the cultural climate of Iran. The large presence of Americans in Iran also caused further fear that the culture of Persia would be lost. (Document D) The new rights given to women were not in alignment with the Shiite Muslim religion and one of the greatest fears of the conservative majority was the possibility of women gaining enough power to change the way the country was ruled as illustrated in the political cartoon. (Document F) By September of 1978 the conflict between the people and the government of the Shah reached a boiling point. The Revolution began with the Shah exercising martial law and the response of the people with confrontations and strikes.
