In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, the audience witness multiple acts of bullying. At the beginning of the book Piggy was called “fatty” then he was called “Piggy” and the audience never found out his name. Teachers and principals need to start punishing the bullies if they want it to stop. Being a bully means excessively teasing, making fun of a person, or abusing someone. Most bullies are bullied themselves so the only way they know how to get their anger out is by doing the same to other people by hitting, pushing, and taking their things. In Lord of the Flies Piggy was watching two of the boys argue and instead of them hitting each other one of them hit Piggy and broke his glasses. The schools need to start punishing people because
It is important to define the term bullying accurately because that term alone can be adversarial. With that being said it can mean intimidation, aggression, hostile behaviors, and pestering the weak. Bullying takes place in schools, work, and in your own home. It can pretty much happen anywhere. Bullying in my terms is anything that can make a person feel weak minded, and has to submit.
According to the American Psychological Association, “Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions” (Bullying, 2013). People bully each other for several reasons and there are different outcomes that are a result of those reasons. People can be bullied physically, emotionally, or verbally. Bullying can take place at school or online. Bullying should be a considered a crime, but kids get away with it all the time; furthermore prevention can be used in order to keep kids safe from bullying.
Another form of bullying that Golding illustrates in the Lord of the Flies can be referred to as verbal bullying. In this case, Piggy is again, another victim of Jack. Readers see that Piggy receives the name “Fatty” and gets interrupted while attempting to be heard while publicly speaking, multiple times by Jack, “You’re always scared. Yah—Fatty!” (Golding, 45), “You would, would you? Fatty!” (71). Golding uses this example to
William Golding born in 1911, wrote many great books. One of them is Lord of the flies which he wrote in the 1950’s based off his experience during war. This book shows how malleable the minds of school aged boys can be as well as many great examples of peer pressure. Firstly, we see an example of pressure when their is the second vote for leader. All of the boys are feeling pressured to switch from Ralph’s side to Jacks. They feel that way because of the image Jack puts out, scary and intimidating. Hunting for these boys were a way to feel respected by their peers. However Ralph isn't really into it but he feels pressured to participate because he is the leader. Similarly, it is seen when Ralph and Piggy join the dance. Empowered and
In William Golding’s, Lord of the Flies, Jack has shown bullying when he took Piggy’s glasses to his own advantage. Piggy's glasses were stolen so that Jack's boys could continue to make and control the fire. They used the glasses in combination with the sun to start a small fire. Since they had allowed the fire to go out before, they needed a way to restart it; the glasses proved more successful than rubbing sticks or stones together to create a spark. The theft of the glasses also reduced Piggy; the most intelligent boy on the island, to go nearly-blind boy. When a person is being targeted, confront the bully for their understanding.
With this said in relation to the novel The Lord of the Flies there were bullies in many different ways. A good example is Jack, the antagonist in this novel, jack originally started off as the leader of the choir boys, and as the novel progresses Jack becomes the leader of the hunters and become more savage and violent. Throughout the novel displays many different characteristics of a bully. Firstly, Jack constantly picks on another character in the novel named piggy. Piggy is an overweight child that wears glasses. Jack repeatedly harms piggy both physically and emotionally. First of all, Jack physically harms piggy, some examples of physical abuses are when Jack steals Piggy’s glasses it disables piggy from seeing properly “His- specs use them as burning
Bullying in the schools of today harms the innocent students all because of the at home violence the bully had received I will talk about the risk of bullying along with the effect bullying has on students. Bullying has affected people since the dawn of time. The first reference that a bullying scenario was recorded is found in the Bible. This relates to Lord of the Flies in the way bullying took over their lives. From the story to today’s world, they are similar methods of bullying found in both, from making fun of a nerd to beating up a kid these are found in both.
That is the predominant view from thousands of adults from various countries who, when asked why children are bullied, said the most common reason was being overweight (Rabin). Nearly three-quarters of those who responded said that schools must address the issue, with many calling it a serious or very serious problem. With the rise of obesity, the rise of bullying of obesity will continue to rise. In the Lord of the Flies, Ralph goes on to ask Piggy what his nickname was, “They used to call me ‘Piggy’. Ralph shrieked with laughter”(Golding-11).
“Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems” (“What is Bullying”). Within the novel and its chapters, bullying remains one of the most important parts of the plot. Children torment each other, and they inflict pain on one another in some cases. There are so many various ways to be bullied, and the book does a fantastic job of explaining and demonstrating each of them. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, the children in the story often display physical, mental, and social bullying which can all affect the other children in negative ways.
What Goes Around Comes Around In Carrie, Stephen King writes about a young teenage girl named Carietta White. Carrie is teased and bullied throughout her life by her peers, but what they do not know is that she has a gift. The gift she has is telekinesis. According to the novel, telekinesis is
People see young boys as an energetic ball of light, but when something drastic happens, it can show their inner aggression, and savagery. In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, a group of young boys are trapped on an island, resulting from a plane crash. They slowly start to try and govern each other, and through that time their personalities start to change. William Golding represents male aggression as a detrimental characteristic in Lord of the Flies by showing events, which affects the boy’s on the island. The aggression and anger that the boys’ uphold, sometimes worked out for them, but untimely got outweighed by the negativity of their actions.
Violence is never the answer. When it comes to it being in a book, well violence is always the answer. William Golding is one of these authors that uses violence in his books, but in a good way because it helps the audience see the overall theme he wants to portray from his book. Golding is not the only author that does this, but there are many other authors that use violence scenes throughout their book to help get their theme across the books. One of Golding’s book Lord of the Flies has many violence scenes throughout the book in order to show the importance of having rules of civilization within a society.
Lord of the Flies and Sociological Allegory: LGBT Discrimination Lord of the Flies is a novel by William Golding chronicling the descent from civilization into savagery among a group of young boys stranded on a tropical island. In this process, the boys feel they must ‘exclude’ certain members of the group in order to truly achieve their dreams of constant hunting and killing. Piggy, an overweight boy who wears specs, is consistently a source of reason in the group, always reminding the boys of what really matters: creating a signal fire in order to be rescued. As Piggy does not participate in the vicious act of due to both his sense of humanity, and of the fire’s importance, he is treated like an outcast and bullied by the boys, who target
