In Gabriel Garcia-Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the concept of appearance versus reality is manifested in three of the major characters around whom the novel revolves. The surface impressions of Santiago Nasar, Angela Vicario, and Bayardo San Roman are deeply rooted in Latin culture; underneath the layer of tradition, however, lies a host of paradoxical traits which indicate the true complexity of human nature.

                Throughout the novel, many characters demonstrate the pressure honor holds as a value in the town’s culture by failing to inform Santiago Nasar of Pedro and Pablo Vicario’s plan. This shows their idea that honor must be sustained within a family. It is true that there are the few towns people, like Clotilide Armenta, who try to directly warn Santiago, but most fail to involve themselves in any way. Honor; honor is something that all will strive to achieve in life. Honor shapes people and without it, the world would be very contradistinct. But the concept of honor has changed over time. Today, honor is telling the truth, putting others before oneself, being kind, and protecting people no matter the cost. However, in the French epic, The Song of Roland honor is a very incommensurable thing. Honor is idealized by characters like Roland, Ganelon, and Marsilion as bravery to the point of stupidity and ultimately even death. Honor was not defending others, but safeguarding one’s own reputation and legacy. And a multitudinous amount of characters in this epic put honor above all else, and it’s not always smart.

In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the concepts of honor and love are constantly mentioned. While love is often mentioned with adjectives that seem to conflict with the traditional idea of what love is, honor is repeatedly referred to in the way it is expected to be in. In the town, love seems to be absent in most people’s lives and it is said to be a “beast” or a “disorder.” In contrast, honor is extremely important to those in the town and revered. The two concepts of honor and love are distinctly different from each other in the novella, yet the narrator’s mother equates the two by saying “‘Honor is love’” (Marquez 97). Although the journalist’s mother conflates honor with love in order to explain the events of the town, further examination proves that her justification is false. In no way does an act of honor equate to an act of love.

In Gabriel García Márquez’s novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Santiago Nasar is ruthlessly murdered by the Vicario brothers-Pedro and Pablo Vicario-in a remote Colombian town. Although the Vicario brothers are responsible for the murder, i.e. the actual killing of Santiago, the behind-the-scene culture, in particular the town’s beliefs, ideals and expectations, should be blamed for Santiago’s death. Aspects of the town’s culture, including the sanctity of pre-marital virginity and honor, drive the characters to perform the murder of Santiago.
