In the novella Chronicles of a Death Foretold, Marquez criticizes how people during this time period held Catholic beliefs to the highest standard and implemented it into their everyday life. The Catholic church had many rules and beliefs that they expected their believers to abide by them no matter the circumstance. He uses this story to show how many of these characters go against some of their beliefs while trying to uphold another belief or tradition. Marquez uses irony to emphasize the power the Catholic-based traditions and beliefs have on the decisions of the Nasar household and the Vicario family to represent the people of Colombia in the 20th century. Marquez introduces this sense of irony in his main character Santiago Nasar. Santiago tries to put up the front that he is a worshiper of God who supports the church for the “praise of God in the Catholic church ” but most of his actions say otherwise. Marquez uses Santiago as an ironic character in the things that he thrives for. Marquez uses an example of this in “Santiago Nasar had reason to feel cheated. He had contributed several of wood to the public solicitude of father Carmen Amador… But it was a passing annoyance.”(17) Santiago gives and contributes resources to the church so that the people of the town could recognize him of a man of God that gives to the Catholic church. But Marquez uses this to portray the irony, because the main reason an individual should be giving to the church is that their gifts
