Graff's Manipulation of Ender Throughout Orson Scott Card's novel, Ender's Game, Ender Wiggin has been manipulated by several adults including Major Anderson, Colonel Graff, and Mazer Rackham. One thing they all have in common is they all want Ender to be successful as soon as possible because he is their only hope in defeating the buggers. Of these three adults, Colonel Graff was the most prominent in the manipulation of Ender. Graff manipulated Ender by isolating Ender from the rest of the kids at Battle School and controlling Ender's every move. He did this with the purpose that Ender would learn to solve problems on his own without expecting a helping hand and therefore make Ender strong enough to destroy the buggers. Graff does not see the wrong in his actions of manipulation, but instead he feels it will help Ender save the world from the buggers.

On the launch to Battle School, Graff started Ender's isolation by putting a target on Ender by saying, “There's only one boy on this launch with any brains at all, and that's Ender Wiggin.” Two other instances were the times Graff transferred Ender from his launch to Salamander and from Salamander to Rat at the same time Ender was getting to known the kids in his group. Graff not only isolated Ender, but he also took Ender's advocate, Valentine, and put her on their side. In this way, Graff was controlling Ender's life. Valentine was used to influence Ender a couple of times, including the times Valentine encouraged Ender to keep persevering in Battle School and Command School. Through all of Graff's isolation and control, Ender was basically owned by Graff without realizing it right
After Ender’s important battle, they tell him that all of it was real and that he had actually defeated the buggers. Ender thinks to himself, “Real. Not a game. Ender’s mind was too tired to cope with it all. They weren’t just points of light in the air, they were real ships that he had fought with and real ships he had destroyed. And a real world that he had blasted into oblivion. He walked through the crowd, dodging their congratulations, ignoring their hands, their words, their rejoicing” (Card 297). When Ender realizes that they have been lying to him and using him as a weapon, he becomes angry. Ender yells at Graff and Mazer, “‘ I didn’t want to kill them all. I didn’t want to kill anybody! I’m not a killer! You didn’t want me, you bastards, you wanted Peter, but you made me do it, you tricked me into it!’” (Card 297). If Ender would have known that he would have killed people and creatures, he would not have gone to battle school in the first place. Death is very hard on Ender and he does not know how he can live with such a burden. Ender’s change in character is due to him being a victim of
2 major and reoccurring themes throughout Ender’s Game is manipulation and deception. Much of this novel is about how adults manipulate Ender into fulfilling their needs. They trick him, lie to him, and tell him just enough so that he can defeat the buggers. Ender pretty much sums this up when he says, “I've spent my life as someone's pawn" (Pg. 97). On one hand, it seems wrong to lie to and cheat a kid. On the other hand, the adults manipulate him to ensure the survival of the human race. Besides the manipulative relationship between the adults and Ender, there are a number of other relationships full of manipulation: Peter manipulates Valentine, Peter and Valentine manipulate the world, and
“Hey third, we’re talkin to you, Third, hey bugger lover, we’re talkin to you.” (Card. 6). In the beginning Stilson (a bully) comes up to Ender with a group of guys. They surround him and start to bully him. At first Ender takes it, then Stilson swings at him, and we see Ender break out of his shell. Ender not only beats him, but we find out he killed him. This is where we see Ender realize what he is capable of. After the fight, we see Ender go back to his quiet self. “Again a blow to the head. Go away Ender thought.I didn’t do anything to you.” (Card. 32). Another group of boys start
At the beginning, Ender relied heavily on his sister Valentine, but by the end of the novel Ender exhibited independence. One way that he shows independence is when Ender’s toon leader Bonzo Madrid commands him to not participate actively in the game. However, Ender disobeys him, “Ender aimed carefully with a straight arm, as Petra had taught him. Before anyone knew what was happening, he froze three of
Colonel Graff. “your practice sessions with half-assed little launchies are over, Wiggin”(Card 100). Within the whole novel of ender's game colonel Graff always has to be riding Enders tail. Colonel Graff only ever picked on ender because he knew he was special, and that he was better than all of the other kids. Although Colonel Graff liked Ender he still gave him a hard time. He was trying to make Ender the best Person that he could be. “I'm not going to quit my freetime practice sessions”(Card 101). Everyone always tried to manipulate Ender by taking his stuff when he still wants it. Ender didn't want to be this way. Ender wanted to be a normal kid, but instead he's a genius who is also a third. Colonel graff manipulates Ender by trying to take away his practice time but Ender doesn't let
In Ender’s Game, written by Orson Scott Card, manipulation and ruthlessness are common themes in this novel. Peter is the big brother of Ender and Valentine and is gifted with sharp thinking and an extreme lack of compassion. Being a ruthless character who is driven solely by power, Peter eventually takes over the world and establishes himself as Hegemon, the leader of the world. Manipulative by nature, Peter also uses other’s weaknesses to his own advantage. Although he is driven by evil motives, Peter’s genius along with being ruthless and manipulative are the traits that eventually allow Peter to be Hegemon and establish world peace.
Chapter 3: There is a knock at the door while Ender and his family are eating dinner, it is a commander of the International Fleet and want Ender to go to battle school. Ender got his Monitor taken off but Colonel Graff had his final test to see how he reacted without the monitor. Ender’s reason for continually hurting Stilson was to make sure that Stilson did not hurt him again and Colonel graph approves and convinces Ender to go to Battle School.
My reasoning for this is because Ender was forced to be a dangerous person all out of other people’s jealousy. Next, Ender was manipulated easily, having to face torturous and unfair training, Lastly, in the end of the book, Ender realizes that buggers aren’t as harmful as they seem from Eros. So, in the end the war had been pointless. Ender’s dangerous attitude had come people’s decisions to be jealous of him. Ender was faced with an altercation where Colonel Graff scolded everyone, but Ender.
In Ender's game a boy named Ender Wiggin is sent to battle school at a very young age to learn how to become a commander in the military. Throughout the entire book the government seems to control everything. This reflects Orson Scott Card's communistic political views. The government controls how many kids’ families can have, and the government begins conditioning children to become military leaders at a very young age. Another underlying theme in this book is the idea of perfection.
Although what Graff did was cruel, it was a smart move on his part. Having so much authority in Battle School he gets to do what he wants. He had a goal, and he had the tool to achieve it. Unfortunately it was at the cost of Ender’s trust. Being in his shoes and needing to save the world from the buggers he made the right call. He got do do what he wanted like the lyrics “now I do what i want.” Graff says “the buggers? That was the idea.” after Ender says he killed “them” on page 297.
Furthermore, Ender is sequestered from his launch group on the fly to Battle School by Colonel Graff setting him up as a higher-ranked and more intelligent individual than the others; accordingly, Ender is debarred from his peers. Graff calling everyone except Ender imprudent and inadequate causes a great disturbance in the recruit members. Some tempered children, like Bernard, gang up against him and torment Ender physically. As a result, everyone starts hating
He will lie just to get the person into the army ,”How will you do that?” ”I’ll lie to him.”(page 46). Graff thinks very seriously of the war and he will get the best commander that’s not dead to teach the new commander how to kill and defeat the buggers once and for all. (at least how to stall the buggers in their time). Mazer Rackham taught Ender how to be a better commander and how he stalled the bugger invasion for a pretty long time until Ender killed all of the buggers and finished the war against the human and the
Through his significant role in Ender’s life as a mentor, Mazer influenced Ender by adding the final touches to his military education and being a role model. Ender valued and respected Mazer for being an excellent instructor and commander. “For the first time in his life, a teacher was pointing out things that Ender had not already seen for himself. For the first time, Ender had found a living mind he could admire” (Ender’s Game, Chapter 14). From this, we can conclude that despite some of his questionable tactics, Ender thought of him highly because he was the first teacher who had pointed out things that he did not know. What is more, Ender had finally found a person who thinks and acts much like himself. In addition to being a mentor, he was also Ender’s initiator. “Pay attention, please, Ender. Today is your final examination in Command School. These observers are here to evaluate what you have learned…” (Ender’s Game, Chapter 14). In this piece of evidence, we clearly see that Mazer Rackham, the initiator gave some knowledge to Ender, the initiant. We can also conclude that Mazer is the initiator from the fact that he is older and more experienced that Ender, he has information which he gives to Ender and he leads Ender through a series of tasks and ordeals which Ender needs to complete. When Ender finishes the process of initiation, Ender is no longer a student at the Command School, but a commander. Throughout the book, Mazer influences Ender in many ways, the
They were practicly living his whole life! Of course this was done by using a monitor. This device helps the authorities greatly on being able to chose if these remarkable indivisuals are the right people for the job. When these so called authorities finally realize that Ender is the one that will save them all he is immedeatly retreived by Colonial Graff. When Colonial Graff reaches Enders home his parents were startled. Including his evil brother Peter and beloved sister Valentine, which in fact also had the monitors but had them reoved a couple years earlier. After a long discussion Ender accepts the offer and says his goodbyes knowing that he will not be able to see his family for a very long time. When Ender reaches the school he has no time to waste. The next morning he attends his first class. In class his smarts are shown when he cracks the teachers security system. This allowed him to send anything he wanted through his tablet with the name of another. He used this trick to his advatage by sending cruel but funny remarks in some elses name to his fellow class
Graff and an unknown person discuss problems with Ender. “His fault or not, he’s poisoning that group. They’re supposed to bond, and right where he stands there’s a chasm a mile wide.” (Card, page 55) It’s not Ender’s fault that his launch group is split apart, it’s Graff’s. He was the one who made everyone hate Ender. Later in the chapter, Ender befriends Bernard’s best friend, Alai, while working together in the battle room. Ender, Alai, Bernard, and Shen teamed up and “froze” the other Launchies with their guns. “Now others might believe that Ender had joined his [Bernard’s] group, but it wasn’t so. Ender had joined a new group. Alai’s group. Bernard had joined it too.” (Card, page 61) Now the launch group was no longer split into two groups—Bernard’s
