In the trailer for Julian Fellowes and Carlo Carlei’s Romeo and Juliet (2013), the audience is presented with the idea of two lovers who fall in love at first sight, but are torn apart by a central antagonist in the story, namely Juliet’s cousin Tybalt. Tybalt acts as the personification of the conflict between the Capulets and the Montagues from when he appears at the ball (0.32), and his recurring appearances in the trailer (0.58), interspersed between Romeo and Juliet’s romantic scenes, allude to the conflict-ridden and forbidden nature of the lovers’ otherwise pure and untainted relationship. Lord Capulet’s warning for Tybalt to not lay a hand on Romeo, “I would not let any harm beset him in my house” (0.34) overlaps into a shot of Romeo and Juliet running into an empty room, and this voice over implies the impact this might have had on Romeo and Juliet’s relationship itself. From this, we can deduce that had Tybalt been able to step in and remove Romeo from the premises, the couple may not have been able to concretize their relationship as they remove their masks (0.23) and share their first kiss (0.37). Here, the audience can see how Romeo and Juliet’s relationship is presented as one that was made possible by Lord Capulet putting aside the conflict between the Capulets and Montagues, and we get the idea of love overcoming hate even before the couple realize each other’s
