Sexuality in Gilgamesh:
Through history, independent cultures have developed stories, legends and myths that share common roots. From Shakespeare's dramas to modern soap operas, the expression of the collective subconscious creates similarities in theme and purpose that transcend differences of time, genre, or race. Among these universal themes, one in particular echoes more than the rest: sexuality, and its importance. In the world's oldest text, Gilgamesh, sexuality’s role is depicted prominently. The epic was written in ancient Babylonia over 2,000 years ago. Gilgamesh is the story of two friends, tyrant king Gilgamesh and wild Enkidu, who embark on a quest for fame. These actions define the king as despotic by Babylonian standards. Further, his entrapment of Enkidu shows Gilgamesh using sex to corrupt. Enkidu lived a life of ignorance and bliss in the wilderness. He did not know fear, age, and many human constructs that make life arduous. Gilgamesh weaponizes sex by sending a prostitute to Enkidu, in aims of domesticating him. This sex removes Enkidu from the natural world and forces him to adopt attributes of humanity (alcohol, clothing, shaving). The Mitchell translation of the scene shows Enkidu’s sudden loss of power and separation from his natural life, explaining “He set off towards his beasts. When they saw him, Enkidu, the gazelles shied off . . . he could not run as before” (Mitchell 13). Therefore the act of sex marks his irrevocable entrance into civil society; through sex, Enkidu desecrates his innocence and is barred from his pure life. In this sense, Gilgamesh begins with one man the abuser of sex, and the other the abused. As both men build their relationship, Gilgamesh begins to incorporate Enkidu’s mature understanding of compassion into his character and diverges from his initial status as a cruel tyrant. However, the prostitute was depicted as a nurturer and a symbol of pleasure. The prostitute seduced Enkidu and taught him how to function properly in human society. The prostitute also played a major role in Enkidu and Gilgamesh becoming friends because she led Enkidu to Uruk, which was the place Gilgamesh ruled. The way the story of “Gilgamesh” ended was a bit strange to me as well because typical heroic narratives end in heroism and triumph. In the story of “Gilgamesh” Gilgamesh doesn’t reach his goal of attaining eternal life at the end, instead he fails miserably and meets the inevitable fate of death. I expected him to overcome the tremendous odds that were stacked against him and victoriously become immortal. Today’s audience is used to the hero overcoming what most consider impossible at the end of a story.
Two understand how the gods influenced our hero, Gilgamesh, one must first look at the various ways the gods meddled into his life. The Epic of Gilgamesh is a tale of a half-mortal man whose quest to break his own boredom turns into a tale of friendship, immortality, and kingship. However, his tale would not have been able to happen if it was not for the influence of the various Sumerian deities. After the people of Uruk complained to the gods about Gilgamesh’s child-like behavior, the goddess Aruru creates the man that will become Gilgamesh’s closest friend, Enkidu. Enkidu was created as an equal to the king so that Gilgamesh would have a way to occupy his time. Unfortunately, after the two friends defeated the giant Humbaba, a terrible demon creature, the god Enlil becomes enraged, but despite Enlil’s best effort, he is unable to punish the two.
In The Epic of Gilgamesh it starts off talking about how Aruru forms a man named Enkidu out of clay that is supposed to be just like Gilgamesh. One day a hunter spots Enkidu in the woods and becomes terrified because of how wild he is. The hunters father tells him to go to Uruk and ask Gilgamesh for a prostitue to tame Enkidu. The hunter gets the prostitute and goes to a watering hole to wait for Enkidu, they waited for three days. Eventually Enkidu shows up and the hunter tells the prostitute to lay down and expose her breasts so that Enkidu will see them. Enkidu notices the naked woman and goes up to her and they have sex for six days and seven nights. After that Enkidu tries to go back to the animals and he noticeably is weaker. His mind seemed to be awakened and confused. He went back to the prostitute and she assures him that things will be fine. The first thing I noticed when I read this is that they never called the prostitute by her name which is pretty demeaning. Also did they have to use a woman to lure Enkidu into becoming less wild and more civilized? I feel as though they could have done it without using the prostitute. They only used her for her
After passing through the twin mountains of Mashu, Gilgamesh encounters Shiduri, the tavern keeper. Lost in his wanderings, he is forced to seek advice from her on how to reach Utanapishti. It is ironic because after his blatant abuse of power and mistreatment of women, as mentioned above, it is a woman that he seeks advice from in one of his weakest moments. She tells him how to reach Utanapishti and the dangers that lay in between and tells him to find Ur-shanabi so that he may continue his journey. In addition to providing guidance, women also play powerful roles. Shamhat, for example, uses the power of sex and curiosity to lure Enkidu away from his wild environment. After having sex for seven days and seven nights, Enkidu was no longer able to return to live amongst the animals and was forced to learn the ways of civilized life, which Shamhat taught him. It is easy to see that at this point in the epic, Shamhat clearly possessed the upper hand over Enkidu. He succumbed to her every word, learned the ways of morality and man, and was even convinced to go stand up to the mighty king of Uruk, which ultimately led to the friendship between Enkidu and Gilgamesh.Ishtar also takes on the role of a powerful woman. The goddess of love used her sexual power over men. Not only did she use it to get the man she wanted, but she used this power to dominate and hurt the men that loved her. The Epic of Gilgamesh follows a tale of two brothers tasked with defeating an all-powerful beast, yet they aren’t the most important characters in this story. Without their wisdom and guidance, Gilgamesh and Enkidu’s journey would have ended a lot sooner, and Gilgamesh would have still rampaged in Uruk, never bringing peace to those who were below him. Aruru, Shamhat, Ninsun, Ishtar, Siduri, and Utanapishtim’s wife all contribute to Gilgamesh’s journey, and in the end, provide Gilgamesh with the necessary tools in order to transform his character. These women in The Epic of Gilgamesh are essential to the plot, and provide both wisdom and perfection, but can also bring temptation and destruction if given the power to do so.
The Epic of Gilgamesh is a story of Gilgamesh, a man who was two-thirds god that was saved by companionship. Gilgamesh was a cruel and careless king, who spent his time raping women, exhausting citizens, and conquering foes and foreign lands until he met, fought and was guided by his great friend and soul mate, Enkidu. With the help of Enkidu and his influence, he learned compassion as well as wisdom and integrity, and eventually Gilgamesh became a great and fair king. Though the story focuses mainly on Gilgamesh and his friendship with Enkidu, there are several roles played by women that help to make and move the story along. The way the Gods created them, they are individuals with immense physical abilities. However even though they have similarities, they also have differences, as friends normally do. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, gender plays a very significant role. While women were not the most powerful gods nor the strongest or wisest of humans, they still had tremendous influence. Though the main characters of the story, Gilgamesh and Enkidu, are male, women did not play a necessarily minor role. With all the women that play a role in the Epic of Gilgamesh, gender is a topic worthy of discussion.
Gilgamesh's friend Enkidu runs wild until he sleeps with a harlot, after which the wild beasts which were once his friends reject him, suggesting that femininity is also a source of male disempowerment. Although Aruru is the source of both the life of Gilgamesh and his beloved companion Enkidu, the two friends create a society between themselves that is essentially masculine. This masculine relationship is the most positive force in the epic. Gilgamesh is known for his sexual prowess amongst women, but his feelings for Enkidu run much deeper and are more profound. He is said to be drawn to Enkidu "as though to a woman" but no relationship Gilgamesh has with women parallels the one he has with Enkidu (2).
For a while everything is fine in Enkidu's life until one day a trapper sees Enkidu and notices that Enkidu is preventing the trapper from catching any game. So to his father and the father send the trapper to Gilgamesh to get a harlot to trap Enkidu. And how does she trap Enkidu? By using her womanly powers, sex, and these powers Enkidu cannot resist. When Enkidu tries to return to his home in the forest, roaming with the animals, the animals reject Enkidu. The wild beasts reject Enkidu when he has been with a woman, as if being with a woman is contaminating: "When next he comes down to drink at the wells she will be there, stripped naked; and when he sees her beckoning he will embrace her, and then the wild beasts will reject him." So then the woman teaches Enkidu her ways. But then back with Gilgamesh, the power of lust and sex takes Gilgamesh and Gilgamesh try to take another virgin before the husband. Word gets back to Enkidu, who is the good to Gilgamesh's evil, and Enkidu travels to Uruk to stop Gilgamesh. When Enkidu arrives Enkidu fights Gilgamesh.
Likewise in Gilgamesh, Enkidu, was a wild man before seduced by a harlot from Uruk. After his encounter with harlot he notices his abilities have been greatly suppressed. "Enkidu was grown weak," the narrator tells us, "for wisdom was in him, and the thoughts of a man were in his heart." The woman says to him, "You are wise, Enkidu, and now you have become like a god. Why do you want to run wild with the beasts in the hills?" She tells him about "strong-walled Uruk" and "the blessed temple of Ishtar and of Anu, of love and of heaven," and about Gilgamesh himself. A little background history: in Sumerian civilization, there is no morality linked with sexuality; it is practically an honor to be a prostitute. This is because the literary works were pre-Biblically written. All in all, sexuality is just sexuality and everyone has the same amount of freedom, sexually. Greeks could be married and have relations with other women and men because there were no such things as heterosexuality or homosexuality. The literary work, “When Heroes Love: The Ambiguity of Eros in the Stories of Gilgamesh and David” by Susan Ackerman details all the possible erotic allusions to Enkidu and Gilgamesh’s relationship through the wordplays in the meteor and axe dream accounts; the frequent designation of Gilgamesh and Enkidu as “brothers”; the sexual nature of the wrestling account; Gilgamesh’s odd rejection of Ishtar’s advances; the deathbed scene in which Enkidu is compared to a bride; and, finally, Gilgamesh’s lament over his dead friend. For Ackerman, based on these events, “the presence of homoerotic overtones in some of the Epic’s descriptions ... seems indisputable” (Nissinen 307). In “The Epic of Gilgamesh”, what starts as a rivalry ends in friendship, companionship, and love. The reader remembers that Enkidu and Gilgamesh first meet as enemies and they “wrestle” with each other, sexually. It is during this battle that Gilgamesh encounters his first life changing events and comes to understand that his thoughts about women and life in general could be wrong. He learns from Enkidu and Enkidu learns from him and becomes more acclimated to being civilized through his relationship with Gilgamesh. Ishtar, the goddess, is a powerful woman as if to recognize the power of women as they give life to men through their love as well as their ability to destroy men. The name goddess normally would represent a majestic and noble woman of power. Ishtar however, is portrayed as the complete opposite in The Epic of Gilgamesh. She is portrayed as one who uses the characteristics of a prostitute to lure in the man that she wants, which at the time is Enkidu. Ishtar is told “make your breasts bare, have no shame. Let him see you naked, let him possess your body” (Sandars, 3), “she was not ashamed to take him, she made herself naked and welcomed his eagerness” (Sandars, 4). The story talked about how Ishtar would go for the men she wants and would throw them away after she gets what she wants. This is rather the opposite of how women during the times of this story were. Women were used by men and not the other way. The creators of this epic portrayed Ishtar this way to show the power of women being able to seduce men to have their way.
Later, Enkidu is punished for killing the Bull of Heaven and Humababa, Enkidu suffers from illness and ends up dying. Enkidu’s death affected Gilgamesh a lot; Enkidu’s death marks a change in Gilgamesh life. Gilgamesh change from a harsh and a strong person into someone who has feelings and a loving heart. The birth goddess Aruru pinched a piece of clay and threw it to the plains where Enkidu was created. Enkidu was a wild man, hairy and naked. He ate and drank with the other animals. The harlot Shamhatwas sent to tame Enkidu. She offered her body and showed him the luxuries of men. He was led to Uruk and met Gilgamesh attending a wedding where he would have the bride for his own before her husband. Enkidu thought this was inappropriate and took exception to the act. Gilgamesh and Enkidu clashed with each other in the streets but there was no winner. This shows the moral differences in the two though they were physical equals.
