Surviving in such an extreme environment is not easy to survive. In these types of situations, the survivor needs to show a lot of bravery. In the “Story of Keesh”, written by Jack London, there is a thirteen-year-old boy who lived with his mother in the Arctic. After his father had died, Keesh and his mother use to get a little of meat while Keesh father was one of the best hunters. Keesh spoke out for his rights, everyone at the council used to make fun of Keesh while he didn’t really care. Keesh decided to go hunting and get the meat for himself and rest of the village members. In the story, Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, Pi is orphaned in the middle of the Pacific ocean on a lifeboat. Pi’s father died in a shipwreck. Pi is with a tiger and other animals on the lifeboat. Pi hasn’t eaten or drink anything for hours. He was on a hunt for water. After some time, he finds water and good to go. Yann Martel which is the author of Life of Pi and Jack London which is the author of “Story of Keesh” shows a lot of strategies including characteristics, conflicts, and figurative language etc, to show the theme of survival. The story portrays this by showing and explaining that Pi is in the middle of the ocean with only a tiger as his companion. Also in “The Story of Keesh”, Keesh, a boy who lived on the rim of the polar sea, lived in an extreme environment especially when he goes hunting. This is because polar bears are very dangerous to hunt alone and they usually kill their hunters. Both people, Pi and Keesh both show different ways of handling their extreme situations but they both survive the environments superbly.

The main literary device used in Life of Pi is symbolism. Symbolism is often used to represent an object to something else, either by association or by resemblance. Most of the names of animals, objects and even humans in this novel have a symbolic meaning. In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, symbolism such as pi’s name, the colour orange and the algae island, are used throughout the novel to provide Pi with protection to help him either survive or overcome his emotional pain. Hope, a desire for an event to happen, can be a challenging belief to have because it is capable of creating mental suffering. Despair however, is to become hopeless or unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The conflict between hope and despair is reflected in the film The Life of Pi released in 2012 and directed by Ang Lee. in the film Pi Patel, the main character, and his family, who are the owners of a zoo in India arrive at the decision to move themselves and their animals from the zoo to Canada by boat.

In the award winning novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, drastic measures are taken by characters in order to survive while stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean. Through his journey, main character, Pi Patel, endures many hardships and witnesses several deaths. Life on the Pacific tested his physical endurance, he was lost for two-hundred and seventy seven days. In that time, Pi demonstrates his faith towards God, himself, and Richard Parker. Pi develops a robust bond with Richard Parker, then connecting spiritually. Survival in the novel Life of Pi is etched in the deepest parts of the story. These aspects of the novel are depicted through personal and self-reflection within himself. Pi survives because of his strength, faith and a close relationship with Richard Parker.
It is known that one of the most difficult things to do, is survive on sea in terms of a survival situation. (Grade Saver). Surviving on sea is one difficult thing to do on your own although imagine doing it with a Bengal tiger? Not imaginable, but it did happen with Piscine Molitor Patel of Pondicherry India. Pi survives on sea for seven months (227) days from India to the coast of Mexico mentally and physically because he had hope, Richard Parker, and religion. Without these three things- he may not have survived because he speaks about the importance of these things to him and the role that they play in his life and the influence they have on him on this treacherous, lengthy journey.
Pi could survive on the ocean for many months is a miracle, and he even stayed with a tiger during the venture. He probably was eaten by the tiger, but he didn’t. In Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, Pi survival depended on his past experiences, Pi not only survives, he becomes stronger due to learning how to swim when he was young, believing in three religions, and stay with animals for a long time because he father used to own a zoo.
