Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet and one of his famous novels was Tess of dÚrbervilles. He wanted to mention a lot of important things in this story, lot of ideas and also he wanted to express his feelings. When you read this story from 19th century about the young girl, Tess, you have got mixed feelings. Sometimes you are afraid of the situation, sometimes you emphasize with characters, but the fact is that in the end, you are satisfied with story.
Tess is the main character and she must solve problems, emulate with losses of her child and other people. She must be strong and don´t give up. She is innocent girl without much money in her pocket. But one day she recognized that her ancestors were from rich family and she want to

The first colour we can meet with is red colour. Red colour is mentioned lot of times in the story. For example when Tess met Alec he gave her roses (the red flowers) and gave her red strawberries in her mouth. Red colour symbolize love, symphathy and romance. However the red colour symblolize love, in the other side, it also symbolize some bad things that happened. To give you an example of what I mean to illustrate this point I chose blood. Blood was mentioned many times in the story. For example blood dropping from ceeling in the house. Blood symblolize the sadness, misfortune and also some unluck. Thomas Hardy also mentioned black and white colour which is typical symbol of opposites. Some of charecters were not the same and they were totally …show more content…
Nature symbolizes peace and calm. There were lots of parts and scenes situated in the nature. Especially in the forest or meadow. One very important section of the story happened in the forest, when Tess was raped by Angel.
I found another unexpected thing in this story. Even though, the whole story takes place in Victorian England, there are mentioned some other countries. For example Brazil. Isn´t it weird? Angel wanted to start a new career there. In this story Brazil isn´t holiday destination or place for relax. It´s place for the new start, which Angel needed a lot. Why did he chose Brazil? In hypothetical way, I think that he have chosen this country, because as we know it´s very religious country and as I said few lines above, his name was pretty religious too.
As I said this story was about an innocent girl called Tess. She was from poor family and she has met 2 man and many other people on her way. Mens names were Alec and Angel. At the beginning of the story Tess father recognized that they are from nobel family. He also thought that this finding could pull out them from poverty. So he sent Tess to find out who they are and get some money from their ancestors. On her way, she meets Alec, who wants to get her. He raped her in the forest and Tess became pregnant. Childs name was Sorrow. Tess moved into her parents house into the little village called Marlott. Every person in the village knew her story and they judged
The most important uses of nature are found after William and Justine are killed by Victor’s creation. His brother, William’s death really strongly disturbs Victor and he falls into a profound gloom. His depressed state prohibits him from finding help or comfort from Henry, his close friend. Victor travels through nature to Geneva to find his family in hope of relief and restfulness, but it is the nature he encounters along the way that rebuilds him: “I remained two days at Lausanne, in this painful state of mind. I contemplated the lake: the waters were placid; all around was calm, and the snowy mountains, "the palaces of nature," were not changed. By degrees the calm and heavenly scene restored me, and I continued my journey towards Geneva. ..."Dear mountains! My own beautiful lake!...Your summits are clear; the sky and lake are blue and placid. (Shelley, 47). Victor’s attitude toward the earth and nature that is visible throughout the story shows how only nature can heal and strengthen Victor’s health.
This short story has Justice and indifference because after they killed Tessie when it was supposed to be Mr. Hutchinson. So maybe they felt bad for killing her because it really wasn’t fair or right. This story deals with indifference because they never helped her when she was dying.
Along with the Grandmother, her surroundings and nature's symbolism take a big role depicting the theme good versus evil. At many points throughout the story O' Connor points out different aspects of nature, such as the sky, the woods, and the fields that
This displays Tess' integrity and strong nature to the reader, and gives us (the readers) another reason to like Tess. Another way in which Hardy shows Tess' goodness and purity (and resultantly winning the affection and sympathy of the readers) is by portraying Tess as 'a maiden of the land' (Chapter XXI)a woman who is wholly at one with nature. Tess is always seen to be comfortable outdoors: 'Every contour of the surrounding hills was as well loved and as personal as that of her
Throughout history, colors have been used to symbolize different meanings based on associations with culture, history, politics, and religion. In The Scarlet Letter, the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbolism through colors such as red, black and white in the form of sunlight, to represent emotions and ideologies of Hester and the people around her.
Colors are used in literature to describe the different emotions of a character. Colorism is a type of symbolism used in literature. Death uses color symbolism in The Book Thief to describe a character's emotion because he is the narrator. Color symbolism in literature is when the author uses a color to symbolize the character's emotion; it occurs throughout The Book Thief. Red, white, and gray or silver are the colors that are used the most frequently and have the biggest meanings throughout the novel.
The nature imagery used expresses the flaws of Puritan thought and anxieties towards outside forces, both seen and unseen. Through his use of nature imagery and diction, the reader obtains a better understanding of such Puritan anxiety within the community as they try to maintain their utopian society from collapsing to these supernatural forces caused by an irritated and vengeful Devil.
Nature plays a significant role in Zora Neale Hurston’s novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Hurston uses nature throughout the story where it appears in several different forms including motif, symbolism, and theme. One major motif appears on the very first page, reoccurs throughout the rest of the novel, and at the end the book comes full circle using the motif of the horizon. Symbolism in this novel takes the form of both objects and events, enhancing the meaning of the story and adding color to the narrative style. This use of symbolism helps to express the struggles, circumstances, and traits of certain characters. Often, these symbols of nature are used in conjunction with one another, this is done in such a way that they enhance the meaning of the other. Without these specific symbols, the reader would be void of the deeper intricacies and subtleties of the story that make it so complex, so it is crucial to analyze the meaning of them when interpreting the novel.

In the novel Legend, by Marie Lu, Tess has always been an optimistic and caring friend to Day. When Day was about two years into his life as a street boy, he found Tess, an orphan. After breaking into the hospital, Tess tends his wounds. “She’d needed my help so much in the early years that sometimes I forget how much I rely on her,” pg 55. This shows just how much Tess cares for Day, sending taking the time to care for his wounds. Furthermore, Tess, being like a younger sister to Day, doesn’t desire to become another burden for him to carry. “I’ve dropped it off... along with our gift bundle,” pg 52. In this situation, even though Day was out cold for two days, she managed to find shelter, drop off the stolen pain suppressants, and manage to care for for his injuries as well. Lastly, another example of Tess expressing her kindness and optimism, was after a ‘government official’ otherwise known as June, told him he would never be able to buy a plague cure with the limited amount of Republic notes he had. “You still have time...we’ll find the plague medicine before then, I’m sure of it,”pg 82. This shows another side of her optimistic personality, despite their situation. Overall Tess’s friendship is priceless.
In Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, the novels show the climax of the novel in the best way possible. Both protagonists Janie Crawford and Tess D’Urberville confront the men in their lives and choose actions that worsen their situation. Hardy and Hurston utilize characterization to showcase the internal struggles of their protagonists in order to create the ultimate climax in the novel. During the climax of these novels, Janie and Tess carried out similar actions in response to the situations they are presented with. For Janie, she murders Tea Cake only because” the gun came up unsteadily but quickly and leveled at Janie’s breast” (TEWWG).
From the beginning of the novel 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' by Thomas Hardy, it is clear that the main character, Tess, is not going to have an easy life. She is
Charlotte Bronte makes extensive use of nature imagery in her novel, Jane Eyre, commenting on both the human relationship with the outdoors and with human nature. The Oxford Reference Dictionary defines "nature" as "1. the phenomena of the physical world as a whole . . . 2. a thing's essential qualities; a person's or animal's innate character . . . 4. vital force, functions, or needs." Bronte speaks to each of these definitions throughout Jane Eyre.
