In the book, 13 Reasons Why, a girl name Hannah Baker mailed out tapes to a specific group of people. If you received these tapes you were not in a good position. If you didn’t listen to these tapes, you were not starting off right. Reason being is because you are one of the reasons Hannah committed suicide. Clay Jensen is one of the people who received the tapes. Unlike most people, he wanted to know why she did it. He followed the map that was given to him previously, before the tapes were mailed out. Throughout the book, his journey was to see what happened, how it happened and who caused it. Clay Jensen, the protagonist of 13 reasons why by Jay Asher and I are alike in many ways. We both share the same view of the world, are viewed by the world in similar ways and I would respond in a comparable way to the central conflict of …show more content…
He believes everyone is mean and hurtful. Jensen thinks stuff about people but never out loud. Clay thinks you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover and that’s what people did to his dear hearted love, Hannah Baker. Clay never noticed how sad and disgusted Hannah was with the way she was treated. He just assumed the rumors were true, but he never rubbed it in her face. Jensen felt that people go through stuff in everyday life, so you should never treat people wrong. For an example, Clay explains how he wished he could be there for her during desperate times. pg 167. He gets upset when he hears people discussing hannah with provocative language and actions. Clay is a good person and he doesn't understand how people can do such things to one another. Hannah Baker goes through so much and he wish had the guts to go help her out. Going to school with her and seeing how people treated her and all he could say was why. Due to the fact he was close to being a valedictorian he couldn’t do much because it would ruin his image. Clay just wished people would leave her alone and why they treated her that
The idea of a teenager ending her life because of the people surrounding her is not uncommon today. I, myself, have had friends that have almost ended their own lives because of how a boy treated them or gossip surrounding them. Jay Asher illustrates the brutality and ugliness of these situations in such an honest way that I felt like Clay hearing these words that change his life. The book didn’t have a happy ending either—Hannah didn’t come back and Clay was left to deal with the mess that lay in her path. Sometimes stories find a way for there to be a happy resolution, but for Thirteen Reasons Why to be an authentic story it couldn’t have ended happily. Suicide, and specifically suicide in teenagers, is a real problem that needs to be acknowledged and prevented. Every story has many sides and you can never know what a person is truly going
You did a great job on your introductory paragraph, it seems to contain all relevant information to help readers construct an idea of what is going to be discussed over your research issue. “There have been hundreds of cases of racism in recent history, however the following examples are the most prominent and influential cases that have turned heads and made us as a population look at yourselves in the mirror and rethink how we are living our lives”. Your thesis statement seems to be well-defined and contains necessary elements to make a thesis effective. However, you should rethink about your topic and find spots on the issue that are more researchable and re-read the sources so that you can identify the main trends
One reason teens should read 13 reasons why is because it teaches people that words someone says can actually hurt people. Words truly do hurt, and at this moment Hannah Baker is standing in a store named Blue Spot. Hannah is about to experience that very situation of how words can hurt. While Hannah is standing at the cash register a guy walks in, Hannah doesn't like him because he has put her on the list of best butt in high school class. This guy walk around the store and then walks up behind Hannah and stood there waiting,
The speaker is Clay Jensen which he says this because he didn’t know Hannah through and through, just the parts he witnessed with the rumors around him, but the tapes helped him understand her from the past few months. This passage is important because it shows that Clay is starting to understand Hannah and how the stories on the tapes affected her. Because of that reason, also, I genuinely enjoyed how he says he feels he knows the Hannah from the past few months plus he’s beginning to understand her, I chose this passage.
The main character of the novel Thirteen Reasons Why, Hannah Baker, committed suicide because of thirteen “reasons” that she divulged in a set of audiotapes. These reasons were people who either bullied her in some cruel way, or just ignored the fact that Hannah needed help. Whatever their crime against Hannah, each of these people affected her identity. Most of them negatively, but not all.
After Marcus had left when she kicked him out of the booth, she sat at her table and did nothing. Marcus revealed to Hannah that nobody knew her and only thought they knew her by her reputation. Later, Zach came to her table to try to talk to her, but she ignored him, so he left. Zach got mad at her for not talking to him because he stole her messages from her bag in one of their classes. The bags are in the class for people to tell other people nice things. When Zach stole these, Hannah had needed them the most because this was when she started to think about suicide. Because of this, Zach became Hannah’s seventh reason why.
There’s not an actual reason why he failed but what’s true is Mr. Poter doesn’t uses is maturity or his professional skills to understand that there is actually a problem going on. While the last cassette is a recording of the actual conversation he had with Hannah. It shows that she tried to get help and many times throughout the book but no one will listen. Clay tried to stay away but at the night of the party he didn’t, he let his guard down. Clay actually tried to help Hannah but at the end Hannah ended up pushing him away. Clay thinks he could’ve tried harder and actually talk to her and listen. Clay was never mortified about himself he’s a guy that’s worth it because he stand up for what he believes. What actually matter was nobody cared
During their lunch time, Joseph was talking to Kenzie while Jordan took his tray up. Joseph was trying to warn McKenzie about Jordan. Joseph said, “Kenzie, Jordan is only using you. I don't want to see you hurt. He’s not the type of person to ‘love a girl’. He just wants to be in a relationship; he wants to be able to show off his beautiful girlfriend.” McKenzie says, “You’re just jealous. Jordan cares about me. You want me for yourself. You have no right to talk about Jordan like that unless you’re going to say it to his face. If not then shut up. Please.” McKenzie is the type of person that doesn’t like people talking bad about someone she cares about. She’s average height, gorgeous, blonde hair, and intelligent. Joseph, on the other hand, talks about
Porter was listed on the tapes. When they acquired the information about what they done they couldn't believe what they done some say it was all fake and refused to take responsibility to what they done and some even fell into a gloomy state and was never the same. But that was not the end of it, there was information about others in that tape that could destroy lives and such. Even though there were many to blame for Hannah's death, in reality, it was everyone. Hannah says “Not once did I give in to the reputation you'd all set out for me. Not once. Even though sometimes it was hard. Even though, sometimes, I found myself attracted to someone who only wanted to get with me because of what they'd heard. But I always said no to those people. Always! Until Bryce. So congratulations, Bryce. You're the one. I let my reputation catch up with me-I let my reputation become me-with you”. (Page 264/265, Thirteen Reasons Why, Jay Asher). Although hannah seemed to be the person many envisioned her as that wasn't the case, she only let it happen because of the events that led up to Bryce. Once Hannah gave up who she envisioned herself as, there was no point in living her life anymore, because in a way, she was living a
In the book, Thirteen Reasons Why, by Jay Asher the main character, Hannah Baker, decides to go to her guidance counselor, Mr. Porter, to seek help. She explains that she has been having problems in school and even admits that she's been thinking of committing suicide. When Mr. Porter asks if she genuinely wants to end her life; Hannah says that she doesn't want to but she's planning to. Deeper into their conversation, Mr. Porter asks if the event that caused all the rumors about her, involved a boy and Hannah says yes. Being honest throughout the entire conversation, Hannah states that the boy didn't do anything illegal. Instead of trying to investigate in the problem, Mr. Porter simply tells Hannah to either converse with the boy or to move
Beautifully written, is a devastating story about a girl who committed suicide and why; written by Jay Asher, Thirteen Reasons Why. In the novel the main character, Clay Jensen, listens to tapes recorded by Hannah Baker before her death. The character Clay, grows and develops as he listens to what drove Hannah to her death. At first Caly is an insecure and immature guy, but then he changes into a more mature and independent person.
For Thirteen Reasons Why, I am going to explain the literary terms. Thirteen Reason is about a girl named, Hannah Baker who killed herself. Before Hannah killed herself she made 13 videos of why this person made her make that decision.
Hannah is desperately giving people ‘signs’ that she is “breaking, slowly dying”. Clay noticed this and turns the other way, and giving up on any thought of communication between them at that moment. Ultimately, giving up on her as well unknowingly. This becomes clear when Clay thinks, “A flash. But she knew I was watching her. And even though no one else saw it, I turned away. She was on her own.” (Asher 192). Clay finally realized how he gave up on not only Hannah, but the communication between them. Clay chose silence rather than a decision that could’ve saved her life. This illustrates how Clay notices Hannah’s desperate pleas and signs to people of what she is going through, but Clay turns his back completely with his choice of silence. Consequently, his choice had resulted in Hannah choosing suicide because of how she truly felt alone. It also reveals that Hannah is left alone by the person who claimed to ‘like’ her. The words that have an impact are ‘I turned away. She was on her own’. The author used these words to show how Clay’s choice of silence left Hannah alone. Clay might've been able to save her if when he could be the one to save her all along if he had said what he truly felt. The author wanted to demonstrate how Clay’s decision not only made him turn away from Hannah truly isolating her from him which led to
A single word can hold much power. It can lead to death. It can break one’s heart. One word that comes out of your mouth may affect a person so much. Thirteen Reasons Why is a story that teaches a valuable lesson that is true for even a modern teen: a single word you say can cause a person’s life to end.
The theme of the book "Thirteen Reasons Why" is that you can make a differance in someones life if you put aside your fears. I feel this because if Clay would've put aside the rumors he heard and his reputation there may have been a better outcome.
