The Holocaust was a very memorable time in our history and there is a lot we can learn from it. The books Night and The Book Thief are good examples of what went on during the Holocaust in and outside of the camps. The book Night , an autobiography written by Elie Wiesel tells the story of what it was like inside the camps and how he survived it. The Book Thief, written by Markus Zusak is a historical fiction book tell about how it was like to live in a small town in Germany. Both these book have a lot of interesting facts and there is so much we can learn from them. In the 1940’s, Germany was a tough place to live for most people. I learned much about the Hitler's youth and what it was like to live in small town at that time through The …show more content…
11 million people died during the Holocaust 1.1 million of those people where children and 6 million were Jews. (DoSomething.org) Jews were taken out of there homes and forced out of business. Jewish people got sent to ghettos and concentration camps. The Jews were forced to work and live in awful conditions. The Nazis punished these civilians in many horrible ways. There life ended by being gassed, burned, shot or beaten to death. The gas chambers were relatively small, constructed to kill those prisoners the Nazis thought couldn’t work. (Gassing Operations) Zyklon B was a type of gassed used to kill many Jews. Zyklon B is a type of gas that infects your respiratory system and makes you suffocate to death. KIlling by gas was a new and easier way to kill of the Jews. After selection many Jews were told to take a nice shower. They took off all there clothes and sent into the burners where they were burned alive. Another way they died was by torture. Block 11 was a jail inside of the Auschwitz concentration camp. At this block Jews who disobeyed and people who were against the Nazis were beaten and shot against a brick wall inside of the block. (Block 11) Many good people died during this time and we will never forget the people who died in these camps. After reading these books and researching the Holocaust it made me realize that I have such a good life. These books told me all about the people who died and how all their towns fell apart. They talked about how families were being separated and people being forced from their homes. All the people who got told killing the Jews was good and witnessing people being murdered would have been horrible. I think that is is a good thing to be able to reads these books and learn about the history of this terrible time so we don’t have to repeat the
The purpose about learning about the Holocaust is to spread awareness about it and make sure it never happens again. The Holocaust was one of the worst things to ever happen to mankind. The killing of Jews, disabled people, and literally everyone else who questioned the Führer. The Holocaust and how bad it was is the main idea in these two books: The Devil’s Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen. It’s about a girl who travels back in time and experiences the horrors of the Holocaust firsthand. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, a story told from the point of view from an eight year old as he lived right next to a concentration camp. It is also shown in two Scope Magazine articles; “Betrayed by America” by Kristin Lewis, which describes the
Naziism had a huge impact on German youth during Hitler’s reign of power over the state. The life of a German child changed dramatically during the 1920’s and 30’s, especially for
Over one million Jewish children died during the Holocaust. They were ripped out of their homes and taken away from their families, and stripped of their childhoods. Innocent lives were caught in a war that they were not able to stop. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, he promised Germany that he would improve life their by getting rid of the one race that caused the problems, the Jews. Jews, including Jewish children, were sent to concentration camps, inspected, and if approved, were sent to work. All others would have been sent to be killed. Being sent to work did not ensure survival, children would be given very little food and water, and beaten severely, which caused their death. None of the children of the Holocaust will ever
Imagine yourself being born as a Jew in the time of the Holocaust. Being forced to go into hiding, and go every day not knowing what will come next, living in fear of being captured by the Nazis and sent to a concentration camp. The Holocaust was a time in period when a guy named Adolf Hitler came into power of being the leader of the Nazis. The Nazis rounded and relocated nearly 1 million Jews from all across Europe to forced labor camps and extermination camps. There were different ways they got rid of the Jews. A quarter of the Jews were worked to death. The rest were sent immediately to gas chambers to be killed. Literature helps us remember and honor the victims of the Holocaust by reading and seeing all the suffering they went through.
This book was effective and achieved the purpose of describing the Holocaust in a personal and relative manner. I do not think anyone who reads this book does not finish it with a better understanding of what the victims of concentration camps experienced. This book
There were about 500,000 living survivors of the Holocaust in 2014. It is vital for students to be taught about the Holocaust in school. The article, "combating" shows that the students need to be aware that the event did in fact happen. The article "Genocide" shows students what happens when hate against one group or culture becomes too much. Elie Wiesel's Night shows students an eyewitness account of how much violence, brutality, and abuse to the prisoners had to go through in the Holocaust. Though some people are against the subject of the Holocaust because it is too graphic or mature for the students, it is important that students learn from a trusted adult instead of letting other students try to teach it to themselves. The students should learn about the subject of the Holocaust in school because it teaches the importance of equality, about the events occurrence, and teaching about the dangers of discrimination and abuse.
Only about 3,546,211 people survived the Holocaust. Adolf Hitler was the main leader of the Holocaust, he did this because of his discrimination of Jews. There were more than just Jews killed, there were gay people, priests, gypsies, people with mental or physical disabilities, communists, trade unionists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, anarchists, Poles and other Slavic peoples, and resistance fighters. The Holocaust happened between 1933 through 1945 in Germany and Poland. Night, is an autobiography written by Elie Wisel who was involved in the Holocaust. Auschwitz Death Camp, it is a video documentary of the death camp including Elie Wisel and Oprah Winfrey. The truth about the Holocaust to me is horrendous, all the torturing they had to go through
The Holocaust was very extreme, forcing victims to make a choice between prioritizing their own survival or allowing a close friend or family member to live. Some people would not have survived unless they could steal clothes or food from another person else, and countless others selflessly surrendered their own resources allowing a family member to stay alive. Night is a novel written by Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel. In Auschwitz, the officers deprived Elie and the other prisoners of food, resources and clean living space. Prisoners had to sacrifice morality if they wanted to live. My Life in Germany is a short story by Rosa Marie Burger. It takes place in the Holocaust's early days and highlights the sharp loss of rights that the German Jews endured. They felt betrayed when their fellow citizens did not speak out. Most people will not remain loyal if it means putting themselves in imminent danger.
The book I read was Never To Forget The Jews of the Holocaust by Milton Meltzer. The book is written by Meltzer’s true story of the. It tells the story of when over five million Jewish people were massacred. The book has no characters. From beginning to end the book takes place in Germany. It only tells the straight forward account of the Jewish Holocaust. He writes the story in an interesting view point because he is an old American Jew, watching events of the war from newspapers and radios. Writing the book in informational facts. The first chapter is entitled “History of Hatred.” It describes the horrible conditions Jews had to endure prior to the date January of 1933, Hitler comes to power. It also explains how the Jews were enslaved
The Holocaust was a tragic and fatal experience that many Jews suffered from during World War II. The most famous survivor, Elie Wiesel writes about his experiences in his memoir Night. Elie is tortured, starved dehydrated, and beaten. Trauma like this transforms people. Elie’s experiences in Auschwitz also altered his relationship with God and his father.
Night by Elie Wiesel was also a very disturbing memoir on the Holocaust. Some of the scenes depicted even gave me nightmares; about someone torturing me like the Nazis did the Jews. Last year in English we read two
The Holocaust was a horrible event and had many tragedies and losses of family and friends. This event starts in 1933 where Hitler rises to power, and ends in 1945 where Hitler is defeated and the holocaust has ended. There are many topics about the holocaust that people would want to know, but this topic is a crucial and important one. The topic is Life during the Holocaust where we learn about how Jewish people live during the holocaust and what happened to them in the concentration camps.
Not only is the Holocaust a large part of history in general, but it is a haunting part of Jewish history. Many Jewish survivors have tried to shut out their past, but it is almost impossible for them to forget something that has impacted their lives in such a huge way. One survivor, Zelda Fuksman, said, “Teaching about the Holocaust is not just our job, it's our inheritance. It's our history. We can't rewrite it and we can't forget it” (“Next Generations Holocaust…”). It is people like Zelda who help the public and Jewish community remember and learn about an important part
The Holocaust was one of the most tragic events in history which ended many innocent Jewish lives. Six million Jews plus many more were completely wiped out due to the effects of the Holocaust. It is still unforgivable for the things the Nazi party did and is still a very questionable subject on how they were able to accomplish such devastation. To be able to organize the removal of an entire population of people based on their religion not only takes high intelligence, but most of all takes a very twisted and demented outlook on life. Learning about the holocaust and the people involved is very important, as well as how it has affected our world today. There are many very fascinating things about the holocaust but three
The Holocaust just didn’t effect the Jews it affected others and future generations. There are many lessons that we can learn from the Holocaust and how we can stop them from happening again. Some of these lessons are to be able to prevent these events, protect them in case they occur and to remember the event.
