A novel extremely fascinating yet exceptionally ambiguous. Things Fall Apart is a novel by Chinua Achebe that takes place in Nigeria, Africa where the story is mainly about how the main character’s life is falling apart. Therefore, if there were two different readers are someone from the African Culture and someone from the American culture reading it in modern time they would interpret the novel differently. In the novel the text could be interpreted differently by two different readers through the main character, the plot, and the tribes beliefs. It is first noticed this on page thirteen where the author states,“Okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wives, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper, and so did his little children.” This quote explains that he hit his children and wives which happens frequently throughout the novel. The reason as to why these two readers will interpret this specific text differently is because the cultures have a different perspective on abuse. It is not unheard of throughout both parties but, in the American culture, it is considered worse and even have all these organizations to stop the abuse against people especially women and children. The reader from the African culture has different morals and knows that although it is wrong men tend to have more power over women even in modern time.Okonkwo shows success throughout the novel and worked himself up top the top with nothing. On page eight it says, “ He was still young but he had won fame as the greatest wrestler in the nine villages. He was a wealthy farmer and had two barns full of yams, and had just married his third wife.” The reader coming from the African Culture would have an idea of what success means to …show more content…

As the book progresses we notice the changes that starts to happen in the book. Such as, when Okonkwo gets banished from the tribe simply because his gun went off which is shown on page one-hundred twenty-four where it says, “ Okonkwo had committed the female, because it had been inadvertent. He could return to the clan after seven years.” This would be interpreted differently by the two different readers because the reader from the African Culture would understand how the tribes were ran back then when they had a different type of government system. Of course that does not stop them from believing the situation could have been handled better. The reader from the American Culture would believe that they should have a different type of government where they decide whether or not he was guilty. Simply because our law system is different than those from African law system even
