Have you ever thought about the things you have and what they mean to you whether they are physical or not? I will admit, I don’t regularly think about what my possessions mean to me. There is a short story called the things they carried, which is about some American soldiers in the Vietnam War, and what the things they carried meant to them emotionally and physically. Some of my most important things are my gold chain necklace, rifle, and wallet. My gold chain is very important to me, because it was given to me by my parents while my dad and I where on a trip. He said I had become a man and that he will treat me like one. My necklace gives me a bigger emotional bond with my parents, and I feel like I can relate to what they feel and experience. My necklace gives me a sense of security and importance. It brings me a sense of maturity and responsibility, since my father and mother thought I was responsible enough to carry such an expensive item and not lose it. Finally, it creates a mutual respect, because they trust me with something special, I respect them, and because I respect them they then respect me. The necklace meets more of my emotional needs than my physical needs. The rifle my father gifted me is one of my top possessions. I go out hunting many times with it. My main points are the reasons why my gold necklace has importance to me, the reasons why my rifle is important to me, and finally the reasons why my wallet is important to me. I have discovered many things about me that I wouldn’t have if I didn’t look at my most favored possessions and feelings and what they mean to myself. For example, I realized that I love objects that represent responsibility, self-confidence, maturity, and independence.
