This prelude to The Lord of the Rings introduces the reader to the fantasy land of
Middle Earth and the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. Hobbits are smaller than dwarves and have large, furry feet. One fateful day, Bilbo is persuaded by the wizard Gandalf to join thirteen dwarves on a dangerous mission to Lonely Mountain to retrieve the lost treasure of the dwarves now guarded by the wicked dragon Smaug. The dwarves are led by Thorin and include fat Bombur, the ancient Balin, Dori, the youngest members,

With the liberation of the treasure, greed and avarice take over and a great battle takes places in which the armies of the Lake People, the Wood Elves, an army of eagles, a neighboring colony of dwarves, and Thorin's group join forces to repel an attack by the goblins and Wargs. Thorin is killed in the battle and a truce is arranged among the other parties. Though initially reluctant to participate in the dwarves' expedition, he wishes to help the others and therefore feels obliged to accept the wizard Gandalf's invitation to join the quest. Bilbo is basically a homebody, proud of his tidy, comfortable home and, like other hobbits, gentle and peace loving. He is fond of both good food and the pleasure that giving and receiving presents brings. His adventures with the dwarves create a transformation in Bilbo, however, causing him to become more courageous. Through adversity he learns to be resourceful and brave while still remaining good natured and humble. Bilbo is always loyal and devoted to the dwarves in spite of their frequent derision and lack of gratitude.
