Thorin does have a right to take his group on the journey because the entire task is more like a group effort. If Thorin did not bring the group of dwarves and Bilbo, the journey would have soon ended and Thorin would not have been able to complete the journey and his task would have been a waste. Each dwarf and Bilbo had a part to play. Thorin didn’t just rely on himself but the bravery and skill of his fellow dwarves and Bilbo. Without them, the Hobbit would not
The main protagonist of this story is Bilbo Baggins, who is known for being very sneaky and quiet, he is amongst a very small elite group of Hobbit’s who have a knack for adventure, with some convincing he agreed to join Thorin and his group of dwarves because 13 is an unlucky number, but little did they know that he would play such an important role in their quest.
At the beginning of the adventure, Bilbo was a timid, little hobbit with no idea how to steal or survive outside of his little hobbit hole. When Thorin and the rest of the dwarves first meet Bilbo, they question
Bilbo proved in many ways to be a very good leader when Gandalf was away. Even if Gandalf was there for the whole expedition, I think Bilbo still would have been the best leader on the expedition. If Bilbo did not come on the trip, the whole trip would have been very different and the dwarves may have never found a great leader to lead them to
It was a normal day in the castle of Goranson. All the townspeople were tending to their work when an explosion made a loud sound that ran throughout the castle. Townspeople stood there shocked as the castle stood in silence. After the seconds of silence another loud explosion shook the castle followed by arrows flying throughout the castle and vikings screaming as they charge in. Everyone ran to get to safety and the vikings never followed. They only had one mission, to get the king and destroy the castle. When all the noise had stopped and all the screams were silenced the townspeople went to look outside to see that the castle was all burnt down. One farmer had said “Quick find the king”. They all rushed into various buildings only to find the king was not there.
displays an arrogant and honorable character who went by the name Thorin Oakenshield. This character lacked the wisdom to understand the true meaning of his adventure and let his arrogance guide his decision to dislike the useful hobbit known as Bilbo Baggins due to his peaceful manner. At this point, Thorin has had no adventure that gave him the wisdom to have a good reason to go on his journey and to not trust someone only by their appearance. Even though he was told multiple times by Gandalf, the great wizard who accompanied the adventures for portions of their journey, to trust Bilbo despite his seemingly peaceful personality, Thorin would not catch on to the wisdom in Gandalf’s words. Even when the party began their journey and saw that Bilbo was intelligent and could fend for himself like when the dwarves were attacked and captured by trolls and attacked by the goblins and Gollum, Thorin never fully congratulated Bilbo on his bravery. He also let his mission to find gold run on his greed. When the party traveled to the last homely home, the book said that Elrond, the leader of the elves at that location,”... did not altogether approve of dwarves and their love of gold.”(pg. 52 The Hobbit, J.R.R Tolkien). Based on this quotation, Thorin still ignored and denied the fact that his greed for the gold that the journey promised in the end would only bring misfortune. The rising action of the journey showed that Thorin Oakenshield
Thorin almost starts a war with the lake men and the woodelves, but is stopped by the entrance of the appalling Wargs and Goblins. Bilbo could have taken the prized Arkenstone for himself, but he did not. The reason Bilbo selflessly decides to give away the Arkenstone is because he wants to see peace between all five groups. Bilbo says, “He values it above a river of gold. I give it to you. It will aid you in your bargaining” (Tolkien 271). This quote reveals how Bilbo wants to make sure that the fighting is stopped from progressing. Bilbo atones for his mistake of secretly taking the Arkenstone by giving it to Bard to help stop the feud. Many people can argue that Bilbo takes the Arkenstone for his own pleasure, but Bilbo, being a hero, nobly gives the Arkenstone to Bard to help stop the fight from continuing. Bilbo generously gives the Arkenstone to Bard to make sure Thorin and the other dwarves are not hurt. If Bilbo had not done the right thing, then the elves and the humans would have hurt Thorin and the other dwarves. Thorin values the Arkenstone more than anything else in his life, making him ready to fight for it. Thorin exclaims, “In this debate they have no place. Begone now ere our arrows fly!” (Tolkien 264). Thorin reveals in this quote how much desire he has for this object that has been in his family for many
In the Hobbit there are fourteen main characters as well as many other characters that help along the way. The characters are Gandalf the Wizard, Mr. Bilbo Baggins, Throrin Oakensheild, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Fili, Kili, Bombur, Bifur, Bofur, Dwalin, and Balin. Gandalf is a wizard that helps the dwarves in their various journeys. He knows more than he reveals to the dwarves and everyone else and he knows that the hobbit can help the dwarves in their quest. That hobbit is Mr. Bilbo Baggins.
First, Bilbo is selfless. He shows this to be true during many troubles on this journey. As he travels with twelve dwarves and a wizard, who has now left them, through many lands, their journey brings them to Mirkwood, a very large, dark wood with many dangerous and horrifying creatures. In this forest, the company encounters giant spiders and the dwarves are captured and wrapped in spider silk, while Bilbo hides by using a magical ring that he had found earlier in their travels. He then uses his sword to fight the beasts and save his friends. After this, they notice that Thorin, the king of the dwarves, was missing. They searched for him and the path which they had lost before their quarrel with the spiders. Then, Wood elves with bows and swords surrounded them and captured all but Bilbo, for he had once again used his ring to ‘disappear’. The elves took the dwarves to their palace and locked them away in the king’s dungeon, where Thorin was also.
He was loyal to the dwarves throughout their journey. Bilbo did not leave them, even when he had the opportunities and the rights to go back home. For instance, after he escaped the goblin’s cave, the dwarves did not know where he went. Bilbo could have easily slipped away, but instead, he searched for them. He could have traveled home, Bilbo missed his home very much, but he thought about how the dwarves have been trying to return home for many, many years.
Bilbo was able to gain Thorin’s trust and after the Battle of the Five Armies ended, it had made Thorin realize that what he did was the wrong thing to do and he would like to take back his
Thorin and the other dwarves are tricksters. They disrupt Bilbo’s normal day, making him stressed as the author tells us “The poor little hobbit at down in the hall and put his head in his hands”, an action usually portrayed by anxious and stressed out people. This is definitely a disruption to Bilbo. Along the journey, Bilbo and the dwarves become more aquaintenced to each other, with the dwarves praising him like how Balin exclaimed, “Well, it is the first time that even a mouse has crept along carefully and quietly under my very nose and not been spotted.” Thorin and the dwarves eventually become great friends with Bilbo. As Thorin died, he spoke to Bilbo, mentioning “I wish to part in friendship from you,”. Even after the drama with the Arkenstone, he wishes to stay friends with Bilbo beyond the grave. Heros and trickers, we could probably stop there, but there’s one more important character we have not looked
In the story, however, it is a more mutual work relationship. Tolkien describes the journey on page 35,”At first they passed through hobbit-land, a wide respectable country inhabited by decent folk, with good roads, an inn or two, and now and then a dwarf or a farmer ambling on by on business.” Then they continued on their journey. He knew where they were going and how to get
Thorin forgives Bilbo when he realizes how his own actions have been morally wrong, and he appreciates Bilbo’s courage and dedication to doing what he knew was the right thing. Many people will notice, whether watching the Hobbit movies or reading the book, that Thorin takes after his grandfather, Thròr, who died in the war between Dwarves and Orcs. They both have an extraordinary desire for treasure, and venture to gain more. Thorin and Thròr are both greedy and transfixed on the treasure. They are so besotted that it keeps them from realizing others’ feeling and needs.
The subject I interviewed for my assignment was a 47 year old male who recently was promoted to a more prestigious position. Prestige was the word he used to explain why he applied for the job to start with. I found this to be interesting since he is the father of a two year old and has a wife with rheumatoid arthritis, I thought his career move would be for the betterment of his family. I would consider him to be in the Midlife Transition stage of Levison’s Era of Development.
