Snyder's poems imply that he believes people have forgotten their place in the natural world and that we should try to regain our respect for nature. "The Mountain Spirit" shows why nature views time as more like a singular thing than a series of segments like humans do. Coyote, the creator of the earth in this poem and often a deity of many First Nation cultures, is so disgusted with humanity that he decides to move on but he leaves with a message to "learn your place". Gary Snyder's poem implies that humanity has become detached with nature and that we need to learn our place and learn to stop "pissing on everything". Second, the poem "The Mountain Spirit" is about a dialogue between the poet's speaker (probably Gary Snyder himself) and a mountain spirit. "Ceaseless wheel of lives" the is first line of the poem – it is also repeated throughout the entire poem – is meant to show that life existed before and will continue to exist after mankind. The "Ceaseless wheel of lives" also suggests that time is not broken up into a series of segments. At one point in the poem, the mountain spirit remarks "But what do you know of minerals and stone". The mountain spirit's incredulity implies that Gary Snyder thinks people have a hard time understanding a large-scale view of time. The loss of Aboriginal ethnicity is also highlighted when the land asks “Where are the laws and legends I gave?” This dates back to the Aboriginal culture, as their spirituality is inextricably linked to the land. They believe everything on the vast landscape has meaning and purpose. As long as they look after the land, the land will thereby return the favour. However, through time, Aboriginals have begun shifting away from their original beliefs as their world collides with the Western world. Different meanings could be made out of this; such as the more Aboriginals walk away from their culture, the less inclined the land will be to look after them, thus breaking the chain of their spirituality and beliefs. Caesuras such as full stops and question marks are used are pauses for a moment of reflection. Through the reader’s understanding of the poem’s structure, they are able to not only understand how the poem is to be read but also get the feel and emotions coming across from the poet.
Richard Blanco is a Cuban- American poet who was given the oppurunity to write an inaugaration poem for Barack Obama's second swearing-in. The poem "Clocks and Lovers" by W. H. Auden’s contrasts the idea of whether or not love will outlast time. Initially, the poem portrays a lover affirming the belief that love will triumph over time. The poem transitions and depicts the clocks' argument that due to time, love will eventually fade away. The narrator contrasts the two arguments with usage of imagery, personification, tone and diction. The argument that love will prevail over time is contrasted by the belief that as time goes by, time can never be stopped and love will not last. Overall, neither belief is represented as correct because the narrator contrasts the two opposing arguments by displaying that two arguments are incompatible. In regards to their following arguments, time is not as malicious or arduous to love but love is not impervious to time.
In the poem there is also an idea of man verses nature, this relates to the survival of the fittest. John Foulcher shows this through the use of first person point of view. As the poem continues into the second and third stanza the persona uses imagery as a tool to express natures power. From the water to the sky, Bogan’s poem describes how nature will continue to outlast humanity, thriving under a repeated cycle of life. Compared to the conditions described in “Night,” all human endeavors are naturalized. Line seven and eight explains, “shell and weed / wait upon the salt wash of the sea.” Long before the story of Adam and Eve, nature represented a powerful force of life and sustainment. Over thousands of years of tides, the “shell and weed” described by the auditor, are conditioned to expect resources from exterior conditions (7). Systematically, the universe provides nature will all conditions necessary for survival. A miracle. The Fish is a narrative monologue composed for 76 free-verse lines. The poem is constructed as one long stanza. The author is the speaker narrating this poem. She narrates a fishing experience. The author is out in a rented boat on a body of water, presumably a lake. She tries to describe the fish to the fullest, which appears to be the purpose of the poem, without saying either the specie or an approximate age. The narration gives the impression that the fish is slightly old. There are a number of reasons as to why that fish got caught by the author, including time of day, the weeds weighing it down, fish’s age, and the fact that it has been previously caught five times.
Many Romantic poets expressed a fascination with nature in their works. Even more specific than just nature, many poets, such as William Blake, Robert Burns, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge all seemed fascinated with animals. Animals are used as symbols throughout poetry, and are also used to give the reader something to which they can relate. No matter what the purpose, however, animals played a major part in Romantic Poetry.
Poetry is a varied art form. Poetry is expression with words, using aesthetics and definition. Word choice in poetry is the single most important thing. Devices such as assonance, alliteration and rhythm work in a poem to convey a certain image or to facilitate understanding. Similes and metaphors can take two unlike objects, such as a potato and cinderblock, and if done the correct way use them to describe how Abraham Lincoln dealt with scoundrels. Poetry is beautiful. One of the best genres in poetry, let alone a great literary movement is Romanticism or the post-enlightenment Romantics.
The man describes an identical situation at the end of the poem, saying, “Thoughts of a dry brain in a dry season” (76). The concept of nature as a source of order is based on its function as a cycle. The old man waits for the cycle to deliver him from his spiritually dry state to a place of fulfillment. But nature brings no change to the man and leaves him in the same arid condition in which he began. The failure of nature to provide a cycle is supported by the natural, stationary images in the poem, such as, “Rocks, moss, stonecrop, iron, merds” (12), and the “Gull against the wind, in the windy straits” (70), which shows nature forcefully impeding the progress of the bird, just as its lack of cycle reinforces the stagnation of the old man’s mind, body, and spirit.
