Thesis: Professional golfer Tiger Woods is a modern-day tragic hero because his flaw of excessive pride directly led to the destruction of both his personal relationships and his professional career. Tiger took complete responsibility for his actions, but it came too late and by then he ended up suffering consequences that were excessive compared to his errors.
One reason why Tiger Woods could be characterized as a modern day tragic hero is because he demonstrates the tragic flaw of excessive pride in the way he felt he was superior to be committed to just his own wife. For example, one source notes multiple women have claimed to have affairs with Tiger while he was married and had two kids. According to the author, "In [2009], Woods's

According the author, because of Tiger's one mistake, he lost everything from his endorsements, family, friends and fans. He had spent more than decade perfecting his reputation and just like that it was gone (Ferguson). Tiger Woods's mistakes stand as a reminder that no matter how much temptation there is, one should always think twice before doing something they may regret later on.
Another reason Tiger Woods could be considered modern day tragic hero is because he came to a realization that he was directly responsible for his own downfall, by gathering a press conference and sincerely apologizing to everyone he had hurt. During the press conference, Tiger talked about how he was so ashamed of what he did. Tiger states, "The issue involved here was my repeated irresponsible behavior. I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did is not acceptable, and I am the only person to blame" (Woods). This quote shows that Tiger took complete responsibility of his actions by owning up to what he did wrong. It was definitely hard for Tiger to admit the mistakes he had committed to a room full of his friends and family he had grown up with. Tiger knows what he did would affect his life severely and it will never be the same again. Also during Tiger's press conference he discussed how he had put an effort into trying to fix what he did wrong by attending therapy. Woods commented, that he needed help and went to therapy to fix the problems he was dealing
The modern tragic hero, Lance Armstrong, created his own tragedy. He is flawed in many ways. His tragedy was created by his love of lying and dishonesty. He is comparable to Macbeth. They both knew what they wanted; Lance to win, Macbeth to be king, and they were willing to do whatever it would take to get there. Lance Armstrong was a role model to children, cyclists, and cancer survivors. He took it upon himself to create a tragedy.
There is no doubt in my mind that at the moment, Tiger Woods is the most dominant player ever, but I believe that he needs
Like Muhammad Ali is to boxing and Michael Jordan is to basketball, Tiger Woods is considered by many to be the greatest golfer of all time. Due to his incredible playing on the course, his young age, and the endorsement deals he signed with major advertising companies, Tiger Woods ' fans place him on the "best of the best" list in professional sports. Society places an enormous amount of responsibilities on its champions or favorites. " Sure, he is good on the course, but how well does he support society? What does he stand for", the public says. There is more to Tiger Woods than a good golf swing or how well he can say " Buy these shoes" in front of the advertisers ' cameras. Even
Tiger Woods’ accomplishments off the course bring as much credit to him as those on the course. Joining with his parents, Tiger created the "Tiger Woods Foundation". The Foundation helps underprivileged children learn morals and life lessons through golf. “The Foundation’s values mirror those of Tiger Woods- Tenacity, Integrity, Courage, Self-Esteem, and Drive for Excellence”, is an excerpt from the Foundations mission statement. Tiger and his Foundation strive to foster those qualities and more in youngsters. Tiger sponsors certain golf courses that allow children under a certain age to play golf without cost to the children (the courses and the ages vary from time to time). He tours the country giving golf workshop clinics to children. The Foundation supports participative parenting and provides classes for those parents that need the information. It sponsors many parent and child golf tournaments and golf
Initially, Tiger Woods seemed to have it all: multiple golf tournament wins, endorsements from big names like Nike and Gillette, the wife Elin Nordegren, and two young kids. Life was going so well that the car accident Woods had on the day after Thanksgiving 2009 and subsequent infidelity scandal came as a shock; a shock not just to the golf world,
Tiger Woods has been hailed as one of the greatest golfers, if not athletes, of all time. He has trumped other golfers and sports observers for the past 19 years as he has climbed and prevailed in the golf world. Tiger’s success has been accredited to many factors in his life, and has varied throughout the years having his ups and downs. The purpose of this paper is to give a valid argument as to why Tiger Woods could possibly be the greatest golfer of all time.
Tiger Woods has been making headlines ever since he started playing golf professionally. Over the past couple of years though he’s been making headlines not for his golf, but for his personal problems.
performance in golf history.”(2) Nicklaus shattered Ben Hogan's Masters record of 274 by three strokes.(1)Nicklaus successfully defended his Masters title the following year and won his first British Open, becoming one of only five golfers to win all four majors(1) (the others are Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Tiger Woods).(1) At the 1967 U.S. Open, Nicklaus pulled away from Palmer in the final round to win by four strokes(1), finally proving to “Arnie’s Army” that Jack Nicklaus was truly the best golfer in the world.
Not only has Tiger Woods had the best record in the game of golf, he made more money than anyone, and
This is very apparent in people who are famous as people love to pick their lives apart to prove there not the goodie goodie people think they are. Much like what happened to Hester in the Scarlet Letter, Tiger woods' was shamed in public "media", because he was unfaithful to his wife aka cheater. He didn't have to wear the A but he was still ashamed and now has to live with what he has done. He was forced to take a break from golf for some personal time and came back and started playing but he has never been the same. These things don't just happen randomly. There are many other examples of this stuff happening in the world as we speak. For example reality stars are caught for cheating almost every day and every time they are caught everyone knows because of the media it is basically the same thing that happened 150 years ago because people today are still publically humiliated but in a different way then they were back then. This proves that the things that happened to Hester still happen today even at the highest level of
Tiger Woods is a trailblazer who has shown bountiful amounts of people that even when times get rough they can still succeed. Tiger Wood's real name is Eldrick Woods and his father was a huge inspiration to him. (Hasday, page 1) He was given trouble because he didn't have the same race as everyone else although, “he was actually of African American, Native American, Asian, and Caucasian background.” (Britannica School, 2014) Tiger Woods has gone through many tragedies and he is such a strong person that he hasn't let any of them stop him from doing what he loves. (Tiger Crash, 2014)
Practicing and having a growth mind-set are not enough to make us successful in life. Our families and teachers play a very important part of our lives. We get the support, motivation, and encouragement from them. Davis explains the importance of the mentors in Murray’s life. Liz Murray was the child of a heroin-addicted parents. Her mother’s death was her wake up call that changed her fate. It encouraged her to continue with her education. After that, she met with people who supported her to accomplish her goal. For example, she states, “A guidance counselor [...] gave her a folder full of scholarships that she thought Murray qualified for. One was the New York Times scholarship for needy people,” which Murray applied for and won (Davis 2). Murray would not have been in the place where she is now without the support of the counselor. This is significant because winning a scholarship helped Murray pay for her college. Having someone who takes care us and gives us the opportunity is one of the most important factors that contributes in our success. In addition, Colvin explains the story of Tiger Woods and how he became one of the most famous golfers in the world because of his father. Colvin illustrates, “Tiger Woods is a textbook example of what the research shows. Because his father introduced him to golf at an extremely early age--18
Lance Armstrong used to be an elite cyclist and a seven-time Tour de France winner. In addition, he was regarded with a stellar reputation not only due to his cycling prowess, but Armstrong was also a cancer survivor and served as an inspiration to anyone with the disease. However, he was destroyed by a doping scandal and was unable to rebuild his reputation. For example, Frederick Allen, the lead editor of Forbes.com, stated “Lance Armstrong admitted a lot of wrongdoing during his 90-minute interview with Oprah Winfrey tonight, but he did almost nothing to win back the sympathy of the world.” Armstrong had his trophies pulled, his sponsors denounced him, and most importantly, Armstrong had his good reputation taken away.
When he's not playing golf, Tiger likes writing about it. He actually had a column in Golf Digest from 1997-2011. He also wrote a book titled How I Play Golf which became the best-selling golf instruction book.
A tragic hero strives to do the right thing for everyone’s sake, but ends up failing, however Troy only cares about doing the right things for himself. In the play, Troy cheats on his wife, Rose, with another woman, Alberta. He says that Alberta allows him to, “be a different man” (pg. 1093) . As Troy and Rose are arguing about the affair, Rose is fighting for their marriage, while Troy doesn’t really care what happens to it. He then decides to continue to see Alberta, while he is committed to Rose. It is Troy’s conscious decision to continue seeing another woman. If Troy was a tragic hero, he would know that this action was wrong and feel remorseful, but Troy expresses no regret. Instead, he continues to see Alberta. Troy does not care about what is right or what is wrong, he just does what he wants. Therefore, Troy should not be considered a tragic hero because his decisions are made considering only himself, regardless of how the consequences may affect
