How Tiger Woods Affects the Game of Golf
Like Muhammad Ali is to boxing and Michael Jordan is to basketball, Tiger Woods is considered by many to be the greatest golfer of all time. Due to his incredible playing on the course, his young age, and the endorsement deals he signed with major advertising companies, Tiger Woods’ fans place him on the “best of the best” list in professional sports. Society places an enormous amount of responsibilities on its champions or favorites. “ Sure, he is good on the course, but how well does he support society? What does he stand for”, the public says. There is more to Tiger Woods than a good golf swing or how well he can say “ Buy these shoes” in front of the advertisers’ cameras. Even though Tiger

His celebrity causes hordes of enthusiastic fans to not only attend the tournaments in which he plays, but also to follow his every move like a swarm of bees. Jim Curdie of the Knight-Ridder Newspaper says,” they lined the fairway ropes, often five or six deep, rimmed the greens and surrounded the tee boxes- kids skipping school, adults ducking out of the office, some getting their first glimpse of professional golf, all hoping for an up-close glimpse of golf’s swiftly rising star”.
Tiger Woods’ accomplishments off the course bring as much credit to him as those on the course. Joining with his parents, Tiger created the "Tiger Woods Foundation". The Foundation helps underprivileged children learn morals and life lessons through golf. “The Foundation’s values mirror those of Tiger Woods- Tenacity, Integrity, Courage, Self-Esteem, and Drive for Excellence”, is an excerpt from the Foundations mission statement. Tiger and his Foundation strive to foster those qualities and more in youngsters. Tiger sponsors certain golf courses that allow children under a certain age to play golf without cost to the children (the courses and the ages vary from time to time). He tours the country giving golf workshop clinics to children. The Foundation supports participative parenting and provides classes for those parents that need the information. It sponsors many parent and child golf tournaments and golf
One man who has greatly influenced society and the game of golf, is superstar Tiger Woods. When he joined the PGA tour people jumped on the golf bandwagon in increasing numbers. Golf has began more popular to the American people. People from all over the country have gained interest in the game of golf. Stossel states that the number of golfers went up by seven percent in 1997 alone (2). Golf has become a high source for weekend entertainment for Americans. More than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on weekends (Stossel 2). Not only are people watching the sport, they are reading magazines like Golf, Golf World, Golf Digest and Links. Also for entertainment there have been movies such as Tin Cup and Happy Gilmore (Stossel 2).
According the author, because of Tiger's one mistake, he lost everything from his endorsements, family, friends and fans. He had spent more than decade perfecting his reputation and just like that it was gone (Ferguson). Tiger Woods's mistakes stand as a reminder that no matter how much temptation there is, one should always think twice before doing something they may regret later on.
It is unknown when the game of golf originated, but it is believed that people began playing in Europe during the middle ages. In the United States, golf was a sport primarily played by the wealthy individuals until tournaments began being televised. Since then, golf has grown to be a very lucrative industry with over 27 million golfers nationwide by the end of the 1990’s. “Competition in the Golf Equipment Industry,” a case study written by John E. Gamble of the University of South Alabama, is an overview of the problems currently facing major companies in the golf equipment industry: technological limitations (due to golf’s governing organizations), a decline in the number of golfers,
Imagine the sun bursting through the trees for the first time of the new day, the smell of freshly cut grass still potent to your nose as you tee the ball up for a round of golf in the cool mist of a spring morning. "That is what brings you back every time, the smell of the air, the coolness of the whether and the beautiful surroundings that make every shot enjoyable." (Suess, PI) This is the game of golf in its finest and most exquisite time to many people and many people it has touched in its long history. Golf is a lifestyle and not just games to people that are avid in playing. The game of golf has a history that is rich in technological advances and personal accomplishments, which through time has shown to shape
In thirteen years of golf, Tiger Woods has made over a billion dollars making him the highest paid athlete ever. He has been the highest paid athlete now for five years in a row. We all know that many people in the world watch him play every weekend and admire him, but is the amount of entertainment he provides really worth 128 million dollars a year? Tiger is only one of many professional athletes who are extremely overpaid. “People forget that sports is entertainment,” says Leonard Armato, a sports agent. Although professional athletes provide entertainment for millions of viewers around the world, they are overpaid because the millions of dollars that they make could be distributed more evenly throughout society and go to things of a
Marsden sat down with his swing coach to set up his objectives for his golf career. He realized he had a lot of work to do to reach that goal of winning a Green Jacket. Marsden’s father Jeff, had bought him a membership at Mattaponi Springs, where he would spend countless hours on the range and around the greens. Dyson had a routine he would do every day; he would hit eight perfect shots with each club in his bag. The young man then would move on to the chipping surface, he hit fifty perfect shots that had to land within three feet of the pin. Whenever he had nothing to do, he would be on the range practicing, if he didn’t answer the phone and you needed him he was at the range working. He would put in dedication into his golf game twenty four seven.
He is arguably the one individual in our lifetime that transformed his sport. With his presence, the sport of golf became popular and was no longer a ratings buster on television, and became a sport more young kids wanted to get involved in.
It raises big bucks for charity. While only one golfer will be the champion, there are a lot of other winners associated with the tournament. Proceeds go to the Heritage Classic Foundation, which distributed $2.4 million to a variety of charitable organizations in 2016 alone.
A matter of opinion has separated a variety of sports enthusiasts apart, due to the ongoing debate of whether golf is a sport or simply a skill. Famed golfer Arnold Palmer declared, “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented. (ThinkQuest.com)” These words state what every athlete experiences and feels when he/she is turning a double play, making the game winning three point shot, or throwing a hail mary pass for a touchdown. Golfers are athletes too, they train for that big moment just like any other athlete, but
Fourteen clubs - four wedges, six irons, a rescue, a three wood, a driver, and a putter - this is golf. It is one of the most mentally challenging sports in the world. It can fool beginners who are deceived by its simplicity. Golf is often underestimated by those who have never attempted to play the sport. While it has often been known as a “rich man’s” sport, in recent years this perception has begun to change. There are a number of other generalizations made when talking about golf, yet these are most always from those who have never experienced, played, or followed the game. One should question how a critic with no knowledge of the activity could state whether or not golf should be considered a sport. Golf is a sport, regardless of what any critic has to say. Studies and experimentation, along with the experience itself, reveal all of the athletic aspects that make golf better than most sports.
A player's home course is special. He plays it so many times, he knows it inside and out. The hills, the hazards all become familiar to him. He is able to judge his progress one day against nearly

Simply by being famous your life becomes restricted, you cannot behave like “normal people” because you are always being looked at or judged or written about. For tiger this was the case ever since he could remember because at the age of two he was on TV because of his unique golfing talents. Being in his position means a normal personal family problem turns into media fodder.
