During my first semester at Dominican University, I was given the opportunity to become more independent and responsible. This involved picking my own classes, utilizing my time efficiently, and making sure I was getting enough food and rest. Additionally, I was given the opportunity to think about my future goals, and begin planning how I would achieve those goals. Given my many experiences this semester, I will use growth mindset and discernment to be able to become more confident with myself, be more organized, and be a suitable teacher candidate by the end of my time at Dominican University. One important aspect I learned this semester is that time management is super important. A time where time management was crucial was when I had to read “Inside Mrs. B’s” by Leslie Baldacci for my foundations of education class. Time management was crucial because I had to pace myself to read the entire book and still be able to work on homework for different classes. Through learning this, I was able to connect it to the idea of growth mindset. Growth mindset is where talents and abilities develop with practice. It is a mindset where you are not afraid to fail, and you truly want to learn. Additionally, you are not afraid to challenge yourself and if you fail, you continue moving forward. Sophomore year instead of trying out for the team, the night before I walked up to my dad and said I don’t want to play basketball anymore. Just like that I had given up and quit on something that I could’ve just put a little work into and would’ve been great. A fixed mindset has a serious impediment on a student's learning. Students who don't apply themselves to their school work won't be able to adapt to school as it increasingly becomes more difficult. Throughout my life, I’ve had both fixed and growth mindset, but after reading Dweck’s Mindset, I have learned about how I can apply the growth mindset into my life and improve myself all around. I’m going to tell you how student learn these mindsets. In the 90s parents thought the most important thing that you child should have was self-esteem. But were they messed up is that you cant just hand your kids self-esteem. They took a poll among parents and found that 85% of parents thought that it was necessary to “praise” their children’s abilities to boost confidence. Now were going to talk about growth mindset. These students believe that intelligence is something that can be gained through education and effort. I wish in high school that I would of taken it more serious because now I could have had a growth mindset witch would of helped me out a lot in college. Those students have growth mindsets. They believe that you can gain intelligence through learning. Those with a growth mindset had a very straightforward idea of effort. The idea that the harder you work the greater the outcome is and I think that’s true. When these students had a set back in school they simply just study more or differently next time. That was my biggest set back in high school. Many bright students find grade school fairly easy and get right through it. But later on in life like in college they struggle. They don’t want to put the time into something and feel dumb when they get a bad grade on it. That’s bad because you should never feel dumb about something that you tried your hardest to complete. Dweck implies that “students with a growth mindset [view] challenging work as an opportunity to learn and grow” (16). When I first evaluated myself in the study skill academic test, time management was my weakest skill overall. This was priority in terms of skill development because I would always leave things till the last minute and stress myself out trying to turn in things on time. In order to improve this I made a smart goal to carry out in the beginning of the year. Now after some time, the results of my progression are shown. My smart goal that I created for myself regarding my time management planned out very well, I was able to successfully accomplish a majority of my assignments on time. I would review the material of the week on Monday’s and compile all of the assignments due for the week. The monthly calendar was also a key factor in helping me keep up to date in the month so see what where upcoming tasks the following week. If I needed more clarification on certain tasks then I would login and check the syllabus.
