Title: What does personalised learning mean in practice? Analyse the learning needs of EAL pupils, and those of SEN pupils. Discuss how the needs you identify can be met most effectively in subject teaching.
Within this context over the past ten years’ the term ‘personalised learning’ gained political capital and could be considered as a defining feature of the UK’s educational system. (Miliband 2004)
Personalised learning – theory and practice
The Sussex report states personalised learning is ‘characterised by high levels of participation of pupils and staff in the schools, learning to learn and pupil voice’. It is a continuous progress which facilitates a ‘deeper learning’. (University of Sussex, 2007).

According to Williams (2009) the effectiveness of formative assessments can generate nearly three terms extra learning per year. However Ofsted reviews have identified teachers’ difficulties in identifying clear learning objectives and outcomes by the use of attainment levels to inform structured lesson planning and assessment (Ofsted, 2007). For example in my second placement school I asked a mixed ability group of year 7’s to assess sentence exemplars and explained the success criteria based on Bloom’s taxonomy. This showed what was expected to answer higher order questions and levelled answers. It was difficult at first however as soon as they got accustomed to my expectations a marked improved was identified in their work. They were able to interpret the differences properly and with scaffolding the majority of them were able to vastly develop their answers. (See appendix 1)
When considering Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence, personalisation leans towards the understanding and application of different learning styles, namely audio-visual, and kinaesthetic. However Coffield et al (2004) suggest that the effectiveness of this focus is varied, in terms of their reliability and as a motivator for learning. Placing the learner at the heart of the teaching process and in turn enabling them to take more responsibility for their learning can also be delivered through developing learning objectives reflective of individual and classroom
Prior to this assignment, I believe that a person can have more than one learning style to obtain knowledge and apply it. I believe that Gardner’s multiple intelligences connect to different learning styles, such as visual, linguistic, bodily kinesthetic, etc. Personally, I believe I am a bodily kinesthetic learner and need hands-on experience to understand what is being taught. Moreover, these beliefs came from past experiences in my education along with past knowledge of learning styles in a couple of my previous courses.
The work of teaching and learning requires a high level of precision- how to use the most effective practices to meet the needs of students as they are learning - and balance between consistency and innovation. Becoming better is an endless pursuit in the teaching profession.”
There are many factors that influence the diverse needs of an individual EAL learner that need to be assessed and taken into account when providing adequate classroom support:
Scotland re-evaluated assessment strategies which saw the Assessment is for learning (Aifl) initiative implemented in 2002 which aimed to improve children’s life chances through a more coherent system (Gov.scot, 2005). The revised system, A Framework for Assessment (BtC5), incorporates principles of Curriculum for Excellence (CFE) and the values of Aifl, which collectively aim to support pupil progression. Furthermore, they aim to build confident individuals and successful learners (Educationscotland.gov.uk, 2008) who are active participants in their own learning and set their own targets. However, ‘for this to be effective teachers need to build an intimate and detailed knowledge of their pupils’ thinking and assist them, with fairly specific advice and scaffolding, in achieving the next stage’ (Harris, 2007). Therefore, for formative assessment to effectively support learner attainment, teachers must have a detailed knowledge of pupil capability and support them progressively in developing their own metacognition.
As an educator, it is my job to find new ways for my students to learn that coincides with their particular learning style and takes advantage of their strengths. In all practical terms, this will mean finding new ways for each of my students to learn in their own particular way. As a whole, my students will need more reason to learn with authentic experiences, hands-on

A driving objective for a teacher is to affect students to advance their expertise in education by finding them the correct course. The teacher should promote positive motivation and inspiration by adhering to legislation and codes of practice which will increase every student’s focus in developing and bridging gaps to display eagerness towards a healthy broad mindset, creative thinking and brighter approach. A mentor should coordinate assessments which will reinforce the ability to perceive individuals’ abilities and knowledge progressions and moreover support them further to boost their learning capacity to acquire a well-established national standards skill set.

One of today’s curriculum and instructional trends is geared toward personalized learning. This trend is called many different things: “individualized education plans”, “out-comes based learning” and “learning analytics” to name a few. Whatever term one uses, this educational trend has a profound impact on learners, teachers, curriculum and spiritual growth.
Knowing their particular learning styles(s) should encourage student/patient self-enhancement. It is also important for each individual be not only knowledgeable of their learning preferences but to practice other styles to enhance their learning abilities. It is believed this encourages well rounded education and learning.
Education has been enhanced in recent history and every educator now seeks the best method of teaching their students. This paper explores 5 sources of information that define and describe the personalized system for instruction teaching model used in today’s classrooms. There is an in-depth analysis about what exactly the model entails as well what it looks like when it is used in an actual lesson plan. The paper also talks about research on the effects of the personalized system of instruction in a high school setting. I will then conclude the paper with all the benefits of the instructional model it has on learning in the classroom.

At the same time in order for the learning to be effective it needs to engage with the goals of the individual learner in terms of personal development or career development.
The focus of this literature review will be on the history of the set theme within the research project, the points that have been put across through various researchers will also be included to gain a clarity of understanding in topics related to learner autonomy and the belief’s teachers have on learner autonomy and the way in which they implement this in their classrooms. The literature review will consider the sub-headings above (I.1 – I.7).
