How does racism affect a story? As a kid in the 1930s, Harper Lee grew up when there was hardly any equality for African Americans. Harper Lee’s only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is heavily based off of prejudice and racism from her childhood. In her book, she writes about racial discrimination through the eyes of a six year-old girl, named Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch, during the Great Depression. Her and her family are deeply tied into racism and prejudice involved throughout this story. Racism in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is ever apparent as the story is located in a small southern town in Alabama; it is reflected upon three of the main characters: Jean Louise ‘Scout’ Finch, Jem Finch and their father, Atticus Finch.

So, to begin, Racism, in the novel/story of to kill a Mockingbird, is exceptionally frequent, and it is a significant piece in the story. Racism is made known by the whites in the town called

In this scene, Scout gets in a fight with Francis, who calls Atticus mean and derogatory names, which offends Scout. She then punches him, resulting in a punishment by Uncle Jack, who did not bother to listen to both sides of the store. In this scene, the Finch family spend their holiday at Finch’s Landing, an old country house where Atticus’s sister, Alexandra, and her husband live. Scout is forced to spend time with Francis, Alexandra’s boring grandson. Francis, after calling Dill a runt and Atticus a “nigger-lover”, is cursed and beaten up by Scout. Francis immediately told Uncle Jack and Aunt Alexandra that Scout hit him, and Uncle Jack, without hearing Scout’s side of the story, spanked her anyway (Lee 110). Scout decides to tell Uncle Jack what Francis said when they came back to Maycomb and Jack becomes very angry at Francis and himself. Because Scout does not want Atticus to find out about why she actually beat up Francis, she makes promises Jack not to tell Atticus about the whole situation. Scout did not want Uncle Jack to tell Francis because “ he asked me one time not to let anything I heard about him make me mad, an’ I’d ruther him think we were fightin’ about somethin’ else instead” (Lee 114).

In the novel, Scout 's cousin, Francis Hancock, said “I guess it ain’t your fault if Uncle Atticus is a nigger-lover besides, but I’m here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family–” (Lee 110). Francis criticized Atticus through Scout. He did not believe that whites should be helping blacks. He called Atticus a “nigger lover” like many others in Maycomb, even though Atticus was simply trying to help an innocent man, treating him the way everyone should be treated. Mrs. Dubose disapproved of the man that Atticus decided to defend. She believed that Atticus has gone against what he was taught when he was raised. To Mrs. Dubose, anyone associated with the Negroes were no better than them. Many people in Maycomb had the same views as Mrs. Dubose. They believed that being friends with a Negro made you trash like them. Therefore, they had been calling Jem and Scout names and insulting Atticus by calling him a nigger lover. Like Mrs. Dubose, Francis said that Atticus had gone against the family.

In Part 1 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee introduces Atticus Finch as a father who rejects ideas or practices of racism. At school, Scout hears Cecil Jacob shout that her father, Atticus, is defending ‘niggers’. Later that day, when Scout asks her father what Cecil meant, Atticus explains that he is defending a Negro named Tom Robinson. Scout was stunned by his unexpected response. When Scout asks why, Atticus responds, “I’m simply defending a Negro… for a number of reasons. The main one is if I didn't I couldn't hold my head up in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” (86) By accepting Tom Robinson’s case without a single argument, Atticus really shows his civility towards Negroes, even when they are not respected by anyone else in the state. Atticus seeks to treat Tom as an individual while rejecting racism in all forms, both language, and behavior. Not only does this show his belief in racial equality, but it also shows his courage.

Mockingbirds will only sing their hearts, not cause any damage or give their lives to pleasing others. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird great examples are shown of different types of mockingbirds. Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Arthur (Boo) Radley are great examples of representing a mockingbird.

Imagine being in a society where people are judged because of the color of their skin. Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. As much as, Atticus wanted to help Tom Robinson with his case. Unfortunately, Atticus lost the case to Mayella Ewell and her father Bob Ewell. It was very difficult to help an African American man with a case like his because many white people at the time disliked African Americans. Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird uses the theme of racism, which is shown through segregation, events in the school, and has situations of racism that compare to racism in the modern world.

Atticus Finch is a man with strong morals. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, the people of Maycomb County have finally met their match. Tom Robinson is a negro in early 1930’s Maycomb County. Tom has been accused of rape and Atticus FInch is his best hope. It makes sense for Atticus to be the one defend tom because he is compassionate and very brave.

Scout’s father, Atticus Finch, is appointed to defend Tom Robinson- a black man accused of raping a white woman. When the town discovers Atticus is defending a black man, he receives immense amount of hate and spiteful comments. Atticus knows that he is doing the right thing by defending an innocent man regardless of what the town believes. Atticus tells Scout one night “you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view..." (Lee 36).

The story was written a few years after the Chicago World Fair in which Baum visited. What influences Baum to write such story? How is the story related to the fair?

“To Kill A Mockingbird” is marvelous and unforgettable novel. Not only show how dramatic, sad in and old town – Maycomb be like, but through her unique writings, some big conflicts about politics and critical is going on through this tired old Southern town. Not just in general like education, friendship, neighbors but also pacific in individuals like family and the people’s characteristics themselves. In one book yet can covered with such many problems, Harper Lee must have been experienced a lot and deeply understanding that time. That is why the book lives, becoming literature and get the love from the audiences a lot. One of the problem and mostly run along with the story and interest me is racism between white people and black people

In both the text “To Kill a Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee and the film “A Time to Kill” directed by Joel Schumacher, similar ideas are presented using language devices and stylistic features in differing ways to appeal to their target audience. Each have very similar storylines in which a white lawyer defends a an African-American in a prejudiced court case. Racism is a key idea presented strongly in each due to the eras they are set in. The era and country set in each story provide a strong base for the prominent issue. With the unpleasant happenings in each text and through the racist acts the idea of compassion shines through. As well as compassion being a significant idea, forgiveness is also presented through the racists acts.
