A study entitled, Effect of sports sponsorship by tobacco companies on children’s experimentation with tobacco, utilized a questionnaire that asked adolescents aged 13-16 about their knowledge of tobacco’s addictive and destructive nature, their level of temptation to buy or experiment with tobacco, and their awareness of tobacco as a sponsor of sporting events. The majority of those questioned were cognizant of the significant negative implications that tobacco could have on one’s health, including causing cancer, heart disease and reducing lifespan. Nonetheless, those who watched sporting events with tobacco sponsors were enticed to buy cigarettes. Youth associate sport with the attributes of a healthy lifestyles in the same fashion as adult fans, the difference lies in the pliability of their understanding. This study showcases that those who were most likely to experiment or buy tobacco products were not only aware of the affiliations of tobacco and sports, they had also viewed the sporting events (Vaidya, Naik, Vaidya, 1996). This is pertinent due to the fact that adolescents watching the matches attributed the athletic abilities of the players to the usage of tobacco products. Some children believed that the athletes were smokers, and extrapolated the false notion that, “smoking gives more strength, improves battling and fielding, and increases chances of winning” (Vaidya, Naik, Vaidya, 1996, p. 400). However, by the early 21st century the converse to this theory had been proven. Smoking had been identified as one of the leading causes of mortality and disease globally. Many of these tobacco companies don’t understand that tobacco advertising is a huge public health issue that increases smoking. Tobacco company advertising and promoting is the start of the use of tobacco among teenagers. Now, these media and magazine advertisements about cigars have caused teenagers to be exposed to cigarette advertising. Not only that but also these teenagers find ads appealing and also increase their desire to smoke. Cigarette companies spent about $8.37 billion on advertising and promotional expenses in the United States in 2011.
Tobacco companies that sponsor cultural and sporting events and other organizations, is a very effective form of indirect advertising. This advertising influences attitudes towards smoking tobacco products and their use. This affects the effectiveness of tobacco control programs, especially when it is aimed at young people. Therefore restriction on these promotions, such as the new act of law to ban tobacco sponsorship programs, is also to be a source of protection for children and youth from marketing activities that makes them to try the product.

Young people may start to be curious about smoking at some point in time in their life. They might like the idea of doing something dangerous or something that makes them look like an adult. Young people do not know that smoking and tobacco use can cause cancer and heart disease. They do not look into the future to worry about the consequences. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States (Persoskie, Donaldson, & King, 2016). In this cohort study, there was a research if there was an interest about or ever-utilization of tobacco items among the US middle and high school students changed from 2012 to 2014. The research data came from the 2012 and 2014 National Youth Tobacco Surveys of US students in grades 6 through 12 (Persoskie, Donaldson, & King, 2016). 2014 data of students who used cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, and e-cigarettes were classified as ever-users or never-users of each product. The never-users were questioned about their curiosity about each product if they had been definitely, probably, probably not, or definitely not been curious about using the products.

Teenage students are the main participants of these sports events and here grandpa states his view on how he disagrees with the fact that big cigarette companies are sponsoring these events as it could have a negative affect on the teenage participants. He continues on by adding that smoking is also considered of being a serial killer for any addictive person who
