The majority of children are not able to express their concerns to a healthcare professional. So the healthcare professional will have to scrutinize and carefully observe the child to identify any problem that the child may have. Also, the healthcare professional must talk to the parents and the caregivers in order to get more information and any problems they are aware of the child. A through body examination of the child may be carried out. Toddlers and preschool children are close to their parents, but generally, school goers keep a little distance from their parents as far as communication is concerned. Obesity is more among preschoolers and school going children, whereas, malnutrition is found among toddlers. Accidents and injuries, infections, …show more content…
In the case of examining toddlers the nurse must keep a minimum bodily interactions till such time the toddler is comfortable with the nurse. The nurse can begin communication with toddlers using toys like dolls and ask “What is your doll’s name or where does it hurt?” When communicating with older children, it is better if the parents are not present. Each child is different, therefore make an environment differently according to their age, physical and mental development and their behavior. When communicating with the child be precise and to the point and that too in simple and short sentences that he or she may understand. Heart and lung examination should be done in the beginning itself. If ever, a child to be restrained during the examination and assessment, the safety of the child is very important and the examination should be completed as fast as possible. Nurse must bear in mind that the growth measurements of children depend on the parent’s size and their racial and ethnic background. Cuffs for children are available and that should be used for taking blood pressure. It is better if the toddler is with their parents when examining and the nurse can request the parents to help the nurse in the process. Always compliment the good behavior of children and restrict their inappropriate behavior during the examination. It is advisable to
When assessing a child you must be careful to take into account confidentiality before carrying out an observation you must have parents and the settings permission and not to leave confidential material lying around they must be secured in a locked cabinet. Only talk to authorized personal about
The section of the population of interest to be considered for further health research and analysis is children. This argument and premise stem from the fact that children are the backbone of the human society and all attention, and positive energy should be
I had my first visit at the Watoto Pediatrics in Manassas, Virginia on 30th of August 2016. As soon as I arrived at the Watoto pediatric, my preceptor gave a tour of the site and oriented me to the charting system. We discussed regarding my goals for the next couple of weeks and expectation from the preceptor. Since it was my first day, I mainly did observation. We saw over 15 patients. The reasons for the visit were: well child visit, rash, cough, cellulitis and ADHD medication refill. One of the differences in providing care to the pediatric patient is that they are always accompanied by either one parent or caregiver. We always start our conversation by talking and interacting with the child. While talking to the child, we glance at parent
It has been established that infants can detect and identify faces in the first year of life. In the study conducted by Fantz (1961) neonates were presented with two or more stimuli, there were human faces amongst other images presented. Once the stimuli were presented to the infants the length of time they looked at it was recorded. the results indicated that the infants looked at the human faces for longer and therefore, have a visual preference for face. Thus, indicating that infants can recognise faces in their first year of life. However, the complexity of visual preference and the influences associated with the faces an infant
It is important to identify developmental disorders for the well-being of children and their families. Pediatric health care professionals are responsible for addressing developmental problems. This authors of one article recommended that development should be observed and a part of every well-child preventative care visit, frequency of regular pediatric visits decrease after 24 months of age. Recognizing the developmental problems sooner will allow for children to be placed in early intervention which is available for various developmental disorders. Identifying these disorders can focalize and center to an appropriate therapeutic intervention.
Tools Used. Pediatricians need to be knowledgeable with the tools they use so they can properly assist their patients. Tools involve parts to protect the physician, equipment to diagnose the patients, and tools to treat the patient. During exams the pediatrician may need to prevent the spreading of germs so they use masks and gloves. Also during the examinations, they may need to use equipment according to the procedure. When doing a checkup, they can examine the eyes vision with eyecharts, use scales (to measure weight), use auditory screening units (to test hearing), and check the heart with a stethoscope. Depending on the patient’s diagnosis, the pediatrician must find a solution to care for the patient. The tools involved in recovery could be suture needles, suture removers, or a tourniquet when dealing with deep cuts or wounds. As apposed in a surgical procedure which could
Infants and toddlers are the target population where most falls are consequence and with not more than a few cuts and bruises, but not all are relative to accidents, it can be prevented (CDC, 2013). Infants and toddler injuries due to fall for example, can be avoided with good supervision and taking some basic precautions to promote safety.
The differences of performing a pediatric physical examination are as follows. All data is gathered by observation or from parents. Health care providers need to understand developmental stages that impact on child’s response. Need to communicate with child as the child’s level. Ask age appropriate questions. Need to choose the language style best understood by the parents and child. Exam child least distressing to most distressing. Build rapport with the parents and child. Be honest with the child when answering questions or when giving information about
When communicating with a child’s healthcare provider it is important that provider listen and show interest in the problems mentioned even if the provider feels it is nothing to worry about. As a parent of two children we have had many different pediatricians some who listened and cared about what we had concerns about and some who would just say I wouldn’t worry about it and not explain why. It is important for anyone who is caring for the child’s health and well-being to show interest in what the parents want to know or have worries about. Having professional that show they want to help with anything that is a worry helps parent be more open to telling the healthcare
A variety of research methods are available when researching with children and young people, this paper explores the observation method. There are several types of observation methods; there are two main categories, namely naturalistic observation and laboratory observation. The focus here is mainly the factors influencing the
The mystery as to whether human beings are born with a sense of morality or if it is acquired through what the society teaches us has remained unanswered for a long time. Do human beings start as bad people and wait for the society to shape them into good people? In a video aired by CBS News Online on November 2012, a study was conducted by a neuropsychologist Caren Wayne, a director at Infant Cognition Centre baby lab, on small babies to find out whether they can differentiate between wrong and right. Babies ranging from three to five months when presented with puppies with good behaviors and others with bad behaviors three quarters of the babies chose the good puppies. Remarkably, the findings of this research may be used to further the present knowledge on morality. In today’s world people like helpful individuals and want people who do bad to be punished just like the babies in the study. I don’t agree with the fact that every behavior that human beings have has been acquired through conditioning. Some behaviors are inborn. This research could even be more helpful if very old people are included in the study to see whether human beings still have the inbuilt characters even after they have grown old.
These researchers gave us the limitations of their observations which include the lack of properly conducted tests at every wellness visit for children under the age of two that would help glean incite on a child's growth, that could in turn help doctors
During a physical examination, the doctor will listen to the patient's breathing and heart sounds, as well as their blood pressure and strength of pulse. They will also check for fever, clubbing of fingers, growth retardation in children, and others. A respiratory examination will inspect chest expansions and cardiovascular examinations check for abnormal heart sounds. Commonest tests, electrocardiograms, chest X-rays, and prescriptions of a full blood count are also undergone to test for cyanosis.
The table above provides a reader with the Functional Health Pattern Assessment of three age groups, such as toddler, preschool and school age children. Developing from toddler’s years to the school age, every child needs an emotional and psychological support from their parents. They need to feel safe and loved at home. All these groups undergo fast paced development process. In order to avoid confusion in children, they need to follow a consistent routine at home such as using basic skill of handwashing and teeth brushing. Children need a positive influence and instructive feedback from the parents throughout all stages. This will develop self-esteem and self-confidence in children.
Pediatricians are health care professionals who treat and assist children with a variety of problems. Pediatricians need to have certain skills that will allow them to excel in their specialty. In addition to the knowledge gained through the years of education and training, there are other primary skills that are fundamental to the successful diagnosis and treatment of young patients. I have a strong desire to work with children. I grew up with many nieces and nephews and worked with children through volunteer opportunities. Although my desire to work with children is essential, it’s only the foundation to being a good pediatrician. A pediatrician must be able to communicate with both children and adults. This includes the ability to listen to what the children and their parents say and what they can’t communicate. When working with children of younger age, understanding nonverbal cues is very important. Not only must a pediatrician be able to communicate with the patient, they must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues in order to consult on cases. Another important skill that pediatricians need to have is the ability to understand diverse cultures. In addition to the difficulty of communicating with a young child, one may need to communicate with adults that may not speak English proficiently. Pediatricians may run into individuals that learned English as a second language or practice certain traditions that may
