Tolerance- tolerant people have a positive view of reality, thinking that different lifestyles and beliefs are all equally valid. They accept that there are different beliefs in the community so are able to tolerate them.

The world should be an accepting place. A place where people do not discriminate, hate, or judge others because of their differences and beliefs. Sometimes in life there are situations where not everyone is accepting, and it can lead to conflict or even tragedy. The texts, “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?” by Etgar Keret, “Texas v. Johnson Majority Opinion” by William J. Brennan, and “American Flag Stands for Tolerance” by Ronald J. Allen, are mostly characterized by the essence of acceptance.

Tolerance is very important in today’s American society and also in Africa’s society. Even though we live across an ocean, tolerance is as important to our society as it is to theirs. He explains the 3 ways on how people deal with oppression. The first is thru acquiescence, which means that they reluctantly accept something without any protest. He describes it as “the type of negative freedom and resignation that often engulfs the life of the oppressed…To accept passively an unjust system is to cooperate with that system…” The second is resorting to physical violence and hatred. He believes that we should use violence never. We can never bring a peace that way and it seems to be the last resort. “The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.” This system seems to promote more violence although the Arabs would say it works. The third is nonviolent resistance that strives to reconcile between the 2 opposite sides. the author Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believes that “no individual or group need submit to any wrong, nor need anyone resorts to violence in order to right a wrong.” and in the end. “Nonviolent resistance is not aimed against oppressors, but against oppression. However in the recent years this tolerance for others beliefs has diminished, sprouting censorship, and sensitivity to others with different beliefs. Michael Bloomberg former mayor of New York City (NYC) and Harvard graduate and philtronphist then Wendy Kaminer, an attorney, author and social critic argues that intolerance needs to stop. Additionally, they believe that citizens should become more accepting of others and willing to converse despite their differences. Bloomberg wrote in his commencement speech at Harvard’s graduation for the class of 2014 that, citizens of the U.S. should protect their freedom of speech and also to tolerate the beliefs of others. Likewise Kaminer argued in her essay A Civic Duty to Annoy published in “The Atlantic” that citizens have a responsibility to enter thought provoking discussions on important issues to build tolerance for different beliefs. Similarly both authors believe that Americans have to tolerate others beliefs to respect the First Amendment. Although, they present similar ideas Bloomberg’s is better at persuading citizens to tolerate others’ beliefs than Kaminer’s essay.

John F Kennedy once said “Tolerance implies no lack of commitment to one's own beliefs. Rather it condemns the oppression or persecution of others”(JFK). In today 's society, politics has become the uproar of many citizens ' daily lives. Many would ask how has hate become such an issue in the United States. Moreover, how does hate and politics are similar to each other. The article “Vandalized by Speech” states “America 's future depends on how well we learn to manage our diversity. Yet when it comes to hate speech, we pretty much adhere to the advice we give elementary school students to defend themselves against bullies”. However, the author Gregory Rodriguez informs how giving a speech can over turn onto a hate approach. Mr. Rodriguez also quotes Jeremy Waldron a New York University political philosopher that “racist rhetoric is a slow-acting poison”. Additionally this causes those who have a positive outlook on society to become difficult to be good hearted people (Jeremy Waldron). Negative views on certain situations such as judging one of its nationality of being criminals depresses the political participation of citizens. Such cases can trigger signs of those who may have a disorder.

What if there was a world where everyone was accepting of each other, there was no judgement, and no one ever thought of putting others down. Would you want to live in that world? As much as people try to avoid it, fact is that no one in this world is born equal; there is always something unique that sets one different from another. It is those differences that require us, as Barbara Jordon says, “to accept people who are different that ourselves.” Jordan emphasizes the importance of tolerance and how it helps us develop into better societies and people. During the 1930’s, different races in the United States were being discriminated against their skin tone and placed on separate levels. In more modern times, people were still being criticized for having different ideas and while acting upon them. Even all the way in Iraq, discrimination is presented once again towards Jews and their independent country. Anything contrasting oneself will never be the same as he or she would like, creating a necessity to tolerate. Barbara Jordan's quote helps reveal that tolerance is essential to avoid conflict, to unite with others, and to change for the better.

In Chaim Potok's The Chosen the theme of religious tolerance is everywhere. In the story, two fifteen year old Jewish boys meet and become friends. Even though their families are both Jewish, they have very different beliefs and customs. The families have to have tolerance towards each other and to accept each others customs even if they do not agree with them. They also have to have tolerance to all the people in their own families, for even within a family there can be differences in beliefs.

So instead of tolerating them we should ignore them and stay in our ‘’social group’’. But in a project called ‘’My So-Called Enemy’’, Girls that are from different countries that are in a war are put under one roof. They do this so they can get a better understanding of each other, so it's not just one sided. These girls that were taught to hate each other were taught to dislike each other learned to tolerate each other so why can't we. The answer is that we don't know how to tolerate others it's like the phrase ‘’ my way or the highway’’, It shows how stubborn we are also it shows that we can't come to an understanding nother less wanting to understand our differences.
