In the poem, "The Race" by Sharon Olds, she conveys an aggravated and an impatient tone. The author portrays this tone through the use of repetition, imagery, and personification. The author as well conveys the tone through her punctuation. Through the use of her repetition it proved that she was worried not being able to reach her father in time and so she repeats the phrase "...the flight was cancelled...the flight was cancelled.", this shows us that she is now anxious since she did not have an extra ticket to another flight to fly to her father in time. Another way she used repetition to build her impatient tone was when she said, “…Goodbye to my body, goodbye to comfort,…”, which proved that she was in to much proved that she was in too
Effectively, his deliberate use of syntax creates a structure in his essay which immerses the reader into the passage and allows his message to be conveyed. Often in the essay, he adopts compound-complex sentence structures to maximize his level of description and to fully establish the imagery he intends to create. Moreover, when he establishes depictions of action, motion, and speed, he creates considerably longer compound-complex sentences; using five or more clauses and at least one dash to thoroughly depict action, to eliminate any sense of pause, and to fully intrigue his readers. Such a usage of syntax is also parallel to when he writes that “...it was filled with motion, speed.” His lack of “and” but rather the word “speed” preceding a comma further represents the elimination of a sense of pause and his use of syntax in order to create a sense of speed and intensity. In the last paragraph, he continues his extensive use of compound-complex sentences and he suddenly slows down and ends his final part on shorter complex sentences.
As a reader, we notice that she is using repetition of going back and forth through these emotions and tones. Another repetition that is happening through this paragraph is the saying “this is how to”. With the repetition, we go back to the mother yelling at her daughter

Page ten, chapter 1, I chose the passage," The race to death had begun."(Wiesel 10) as an important style of writing. This quote is personifying how quickly death reached some of the Jews from Sighet. I think this use of personification, which is the style figure of speech, is a big factor to the text because, it enhances the amount of emotion it makes you feel while reading. In this passage, the use of personification is a major element because it is making us feel the emotion of fear that they all have.

Often while reading poetry one could find themselves not being able to relate to the content because of what the author is trying to write about, or who they are trying to write to. This is not the case with poet Roger Reeves. Although he is an African-American man, he writes for every type of person in America. While tackling America’s racist historical past, Reeves doesn’t only write about race and the recurring challenges with race, but also about everyday relationships and family, using animals to personify the people and his ideas.

Analyzing and interpreting poetry takes time and effort due to the variety of elements each poem may possess as well as understanding those elements chosen and used in the piece of work. In addition, one’s life experiences may influence how one perceives the poem. However, in the poem “Alzheimer’s” by Kelly Cherry, published in 1997 and written during a time of personal struggle for Cherry and her dad, a couple of poetic elements appear more prominent than any others. These are the tone and imagery. Cherry begins the poem with a feeling of insensitivity but by the end transforms the feeling in to one of pity or sadness. Through her careful choice of words and use of similes and metaphors Cherry establishes the tone and imagery throughout the poem in a realistic way regarding this disease and its tug on the emotions one feels when caring for someone with this illness.
