Toni the Superhero is a story book introducing the main character, Toni, to first time readers. The very first panel shows Toni and then tells us that he's a superhero, then it goes on showing us some of Toni's favorite activities. Toni is shown playing with his friends, eating healthy food, swimming in a swimming pool, rescuing an animal and helping his mom around the house. The book then shows us Toni panel in his Superhero costume with a "T" across the chest and telling us that Toni is terrific. This is a really cute storybook; my favorite thing about it is that Toni, a young African American child is portrayed as a superhero. Already the book earns props for diversity of its characters. It also shows Toni rescuing a stranded cat and helping out, generally being friendly and playing well with others. It sends a very positive message that terrific kids do good things. An impressionable young child will see that and want to be as awesome as Toni. …show more content…
Namely, right in the beginning it tells us that Toni is a superhero, but doesn't really tell us what his superpower is. You could argue that saving animals, helping out and generally being an agreeable little guy is his superpower. This isn't a major issue as kids in the intended age range for this book aren't likely to question it, but I can imagine an older child bringing it up. Another (also minor) issue is the font and graphics; while I loved the character drawings themselves, I thought the title font had a bit of a home spun feel to it and could be improved upon slightly to make it more eye catching and perhaps a bit more
Contemporary realistic fiction helps children feel like they are not alone. When I was younger it would bother me that I was the only girl. All my friends had sisters. I was jealous that they had sisters. I can remember reading Junie B. Jones and feeling cool that I had a little brother like her. I didn’t feel alone because of that book.
Superheroes can be defined in many ways by many experts. Clare Pitkethly’s academic background consists of comparative literature, culture and communication as she also speaks and writes comic books and superhero, defines a superhero to be different. In Pitkethly’s article “Straddling a Boundary: The Superhero and the Incorporation of Difference,” talks about
The Newbery Honor award is given to the author with the biggest contribution to American literature for children. This book was chosen as the 2015 winner along with “The Crossover” by Kwame Alexander. The National Book Award is chosen by a board of judges, this particular book beat over 294 other titles. Both of these awards lets me assume that it is going to be a very quality book, and there is a high possibility that most people will like it.
There is a lot of content that I strongly dislike, for example, on the very first page of the book, it goes into detail about one of the characters (named Celie) being touched by her own father, who is flesh and blood. “He [Pa] never had a kine word to say to me. Just say You gonna do what your mammy wouldn’t. First he put his thing up gainst my hip and sort of wiggle it around. Then he grab hold my titties….(Walker).” There is also a lot of disrespect towards women, when Celie gave birth to a child her own father took her baby and sold it for money. She didn’t get to hold her or say goodbye at all. I understand that this actually happened, and still
Anyone can write a book. But capturing the attention of young kids from 0-8 can prove challenging. However, some authors have written some books that are worthy of a Caldecott or Newbery Medal. Whether the book receives an award or medal the importance is a child opening up the book to discover laughter, fantasy, and truths.
Furthermore, I also like how he added the theme and message about how a child needs a good role model or someone to look up to for good advice and decisions. For example, the other Wes Moore looks up to Tony but copies him towards stealing and killing. I like how the book states that if you have someone you can look up to, you will create a better life and a better future for yourself. However, I think the transition from first person point of view and third person point of view threw me off a little. Sometimes when I finish reading the book in the morning and continue reading later in the day, I pick up the book and start reading again. I usually get confused on which Wes Moore the author is talking about. I always have to read one or two pages previously to see whom they are talking about like he or I. To conclude with, I enjoyed reading this book and I think this book could help kids follow a right role model to have a better
Many pre-teens would enjoy this book because of the thrilling adventures Nic goes on with General Radulf for his sister. Also, the readers would enjoy the bravery and courage Nic shows while fighting many people. This is highly recommended for independent reading, due to some of the fighting scenes that go on throughout the book. This book would receive a 4.7 out of 5 for its imagery and strong
The first weakness is some of the actions that is in the book is not really truthful. For example, in chapter 10, Violet just used a simple invention and climbed up to the tall tower, the most difficult part is to hook to the tower, and I think the hook is not strong enough to carry a person. The second weakness is the story may not fit the readers that are above 25 years old because the book is too easy for them, they might feel boring when they are reading this book. In this book, everything seems perfect, however, I believe the book still have some parts that did not work really well in the book. For example, the way that Count Olaf escape is like action movie’s segment, I think it does not suit this book. The book could be done better at make the story more realistic because even though the story is not real, but the main idea of the novel is not science fiction or action fiction. Next, the novel did not explain some details such as why Count Olaf’s house has many eye drawing and why Count Olaf’s ankle have an eye
It is scary when you don’t know anybody and have to try to make new friends. Many of your young childhood friends will stay with you for a lifetime. Today, I am still friends with many of my oldest friends. They have become like family. I want to say that this novel is a great way for people to see how somebody from a diverse population lives. It is a great book from the view of somebody living a completely different life than I have lived. I think it was very well written and is easy to read. This makes it a great teaching tool for children of younger age groups or college students as well. I read this entire book at one sitting because it kept my interest the entire time. I couldn’t wait to see what
This could be a great learning book even for kids that are younger to help them better understand that not everything in the world is not perfect. My favorite part about this book is that every experience in this book are
As well as showing that people who might abuse their children don’t necessarily start off as abusers. On that note, I appreciated that after the epilogue there were numbers and plenty of resources for the prevention of child abuse. I feel this is important because after a person reads this book they might realize they themselves are being abused and are given tools to help stop it. One thing I didn’t enjoy about this novel was that it has a complete abrupt ending and the epilogue was more short and bitter than sweet. This book is highly relative no matter the year.
Unfortunately, her father expected her to go to college and earn a degree like her brother Sheldon and sister Bunny. Toni, unlike her siblings, did poor while she was at UH Manoa and had to move back home to Hilo. Her father Harry was extremely disappointed and no longer had high hopes for her. When she moved back, her sexual encounters with family friends Wyatt and Maverick Santos grew and she became closer with longtime Haole family friend Billy who was six years younger than her. Her relationship with Billy blossomed into mutual feelings for one another; however, Toni refused to take it to the next level due to the fact that Billy was younger than her, a Haole, and was considered as family. As months past, Toni found herself pregnant from either one of the Santos brothers with her family deeply ashamed by her actions. She did not finish college, was not married, and now she was pregnant. When her baby was born, things started to slowly change for Toni. Her baby became the joy of her life and her father’s new found joy and hope that had once died when Toni did not meet his expectations. Toni later became the co-owner of her father’s business and finally felt accepted into her own family and community. Toni’s experiences is indeed also reflective of our highs and lows in life and is something that most, if not all of society can relate to.
This book is lacking in quality because of its poor plot development, the bad writing style and because the theme while good itself does not work well with the main character in the book. Because of these problems the book feels sub par when it comes to storytelling or trying to make you connect with the characters which makes the book feel
seen more at rock concerts than in films for children. I think that the book can be enjoyed
The weaknesses of the story are just too long. It was too broad, and it will make you boring on some pages. It makes you upset because there’s a twist and some words that they used is hard to understand. Even though there are weaknesses of the story, it will make you be a critical thinker. For the example, on how’s her parents could be find. It is exciting because your expected will not be the same as you expect at the last part of the story. Although it is a true story, there is a doubt that can possibly form in your mind because for me, some details are not possible. But all in all, it is beautiful to have read.
