The Hobbit is a book written by J.R.R. Tolkien that has entertained people for decades. The Hobbit is an adventure fiction story. The main theme is the development and transformation of Bilbo Baggins into a hero and an outgoing person. I chose this theme because at the beginning of the story, Bilbo is a person that only worries about himself and only focuses on the comforts in life; and is very introverted. Towards the ending of the story, Bilbo transforms into a hero due to the situations he encounters.
The setting of the story occurs in a fictional place called Middle Earth. We don’t know the year the story takes place in. Consisting in northern Middle Earth is the Shire, the lush pasture in which hobbits reside, along with the western lands. The Misty Mountains run directly through northern Middle Earth from north to south. Beyond the Misty Mountains to the east lies the dreaded forest of Mirkwood, which is of immense size. To the north of Mirkwood lie the Grey Mountains, which are not very important in this book. To the east of Mirkwood lies the Running River and Lake-Town, and the Lonely Mountain. …show more content…

Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire, ventures out on a long and treacherous journey throughout Middle Earth in companion with dwarves. The dwarves consisted of Thorin Oakenshield and thirteen others. Thorin comes from a family where his father and grandfather were given the title King Under the Mountain, which refers to the Lonely Mountain. Thorin’s ancestors had accumulated a great amount of wealth, and were prospering in the valley of the Lonely Mountain. However, a fiendish dragon by the name of Smaug had seen this great wealth, and was overtaken by greed. He killed everyone and burned the surrounding villages.
