Transformational Leadership Theory as a Guide. My leadership philosophy closely mirrors the transformational approach to leadership. Like the transformational theory suggests, I believe that true leadership inspires the team to rise above its individual components in order to reach a shared goal (Huber, 2014). Some of the individual components are areas that I have personal strength in such as: desire to learn and ability to get the job done (Rath & Conchie, 2008). Additionally, some of the components are the ability to influence and connect with others; strengths that I do not possess (Rath & Conchie, 2008). Recognition of my own personal strengths and weaknesses led me to a democratic philosophy of leadership because I realized that one …show more content…
I immediately discussed it with my coworkers, alerted management, and suggested that nurses be required to check that a temperature indicator is included when picking up vaccine for transport. Involvement in a health care team as a nurse leader. I realize that my personal strengths may be weaknesses of other members of my team. By employing a transformational approach, I can zero in on my team’s common values and use my achiever and discipline strengths to accomplish the tasks along the way to achieving the group goals (Marquis & Huston, 2015; Rath & Conchie, 2008). I model my desire to learn and engage in conversations with my colleagues regarding practice rationale on a daily basis. By showing my desire to improve my knowledge base, my willingness to admit what I don’t know, and my eagerness to support team goals, I am acting as a nurse leader. Continued growth as a nurse leader. Continuing to build upon my current strengths and recognizing how my team members can facilitate my growth through their strengths will showcase my leadership philosophy. I plan to maintain a reflective journal to explore ways in which my leadership is flourishing as well as ways in which my leadership can be improved (Lacasse, 2013). The commitment to seeing my leadership as dynamic will reinforce my philosophy that leadership must be flexible and adaptable to the group’s needs (Huber, 2014).

“Nursing is informed caring for the well-being of others” (Swanson, 1993, p. 352). Kristen Swanson’s relationship-based caring theory encompasses maintaining belief, knowing, being with, doing for, and enabling. Nursing is a profession with vast opportunities for growth and development. Each nurse has his or her individual passions; mine reside within obstetrics, women’s health, and nursing leadership. Nurse leaders play an integral role in the success of healthcare organizations. Nurse leaders shape the roles of nurses within their organizations. Nurse leaders seek methods to improve patient care. They also use innovation to gain efficiencies in care delivery and decrease healthcare cost. Many nurse leaders have an ultimate goal to aspire to be a chief nursing officer in a healthcare
In today’s healthcare system, effective leadership is essential to improving and reaching organizational outcomes. A leader is someone with the ability to influence others but, an effective leader uses positive strategies to inspire employees to work towards the same goal. Leadership in nursing requires a constant effort to motivate others to become part of the organizational transformation. This can be achieved using a transformational leadership style with a focus on communication, motivation, and empowerment.
Slide 2: A Nurse Executive is a master’s educated individual who is knowledgeable and has developed strong interpersonal relationships with the interdisciplinary team. This individual is accountable and compassionate, showing respect and excellence in their practice. The nurse leader is able to adapt to change especially in regards to technological advances and innovative methods of caring for patients. A driven leader empowers their staff to create an environment that is inclusive and ultimately productive using the team-nursing concept. Individual weaknesses are noted and built upon using team training and consistent educational in-services. This
In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also
Effective nurse leaders are often flexible and are able to change style of leadership to suit changing circumstances. They ensure that their people are regularly being challenged to grow and learn. Nurses show leadership by giving feedback and empowering others to bring out their best and the opportunity to grow. I believe that good leaders help people to see that what they do makes a difference. Nurse further their education to expand and gain knowledge so they can render excellent quality care that patients deserve. Also, the leaders would also help other nurses to work as a team to help the facility run to deliver high-quality care. A leader, “should think and talk about future trends that will affect the team's work, and make sure you communicate your vision to your team regularly” (Pearce, 2007, p. 25). I vision a leader as someone who can move others in achieving their goals and mission. For instance, our nurse supervisor addresses the
Making a difference in people’s lives is what I have been dreaming ever since I was young. What way can it be fully achieved, but by becoming a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL). The CNL as one of the important members of the health care team, I share its mission to improve the patient outcome and empower the people in creating a harmonious working environment that will facilitate improvement of communication, promote wellness, and continuously gain new knowledge. I believe this can be accomplished by being attentive to the needs of the people around us and be available to support whenever assistance is needed. The major success is not base in the plan, but the participation of each individual and being aware of our strengths
The purpose of this paper is to “gain a holistic perspective of the leadership role and their impact on patient outcomes” (Sinutko, 2016). The role of a nurse in a management position can extend beyond the confines of the hospital. “There are plenty of opportunities to put your nursing skills to good use outside the hospital walls” (Brooks, 2015). Nursing information technology (IT), research analyst, healthcare educator, and the insurance industry are just a few of the opportunities for nurses to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of the population. To create this positive healthcare environment, nurse leaders must work “within a collaborative and interprofessional environment” to
Assuming the leadership role during this project has been a very beneficial learning experience. It has helped me to grow as an individual and as a professional. According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), standard twelve focuses on leadership which is when, “the registered nurse demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession” (ANA, 2010, p. 55). Within this standard there are competencies that define leadership. The three that I am choosing to focus on consist of developing communication, resolving conflict, commitment to lifelong learning, and treating colleagues with respect (ANA, 2010, p. 55). These three competencies relate closely to my growth and development that
Nursing leaders work to establish just the right amount of urgency, seeking to prevent staff from becoming overwhelmed or overly resistant to any change. Additionally, leadership involves DCNs in the planning and implementation stages, whenever possible. By providing a set of well-defined responsibilities to DCNs, we find they become more engaged in the work, and are empowered by this involvement. This empowerment and engagement ensures the DCN is able to contribute to whatever change is occurring in a positive, meaningful manner.
Leadership may mean different things to different people, the consensus opinion of experts in this field is that leadership is using power to direct and influence activities of people to achieve set goals or targets. Nursing leadership is all about every nurse providing, facilitating and promoting the best healthcare services to client and to the public. Leadership is a shared responsibility. (CNO 2012). The nursing profession need leaders that can build the capacity of nurses through mentoring, coaching, supporting, developing the expertise and management skills of nurses to make a difference to the quality of patient care at all levels of the profession ( McIntyre & McDonald, 2014 ). At the core of every leadership either political or managerial is power and how the leader uses it. While it is practically impossible to lead without power, how the nurse leader uses this power not only determine the leadership style but also the results or outcomes of what is achieved through the process.
Being a great nurse means to be in a mutual partnership with the healthcare professionals and commit to each individual patients condition. It is to collaborate with other health care professionals to provide the best care possible. Becoming an equal partner with a physician, the nurse will become a leader and as such will take part in developing health care plans, tracking improvements, making modifications and participate in important boardroom decision. Interprofessional collaboration and coordination moves the nurse from the bedside to the boardroom. To achieve this I plan to actively participate in leadership development and use my vision to transform health care systems. I will be involved in mentoring programs to progress my
A transformational leadership style along with good communication skills can be used to manage the multiples issues Hartland Memorial faces. “Transformational leadership involves anticipating future trends, inspiring followers to understand and embrace a new vision of possibilities, developing others to be leaders, and reward learners” (Hellriegal & Slocum, 2009, p. 301). Elizabeth and her associates should have the necessary qualities of a transformational leader; integrity, accountability, and motivation, so the staff can identify with them. The nurse manager could give nurses opportunities to demonstrate and experience leadership in their profession on a regular basis. Effective leadership is critical in delivering high quality care; equally
Out of all the different leadership theories I learned about this semester I really feel that I best relate to transformational leadership and authentic leadership theories. During the development of my personal theory I found that these theories tended to list many similar traits, and values that aligned with my own. Additionally, both authentic and transformative theories place a significant amount of emphasis on the relationship between the leader and her/his followers. The success and influence of a leader comes not from herself but from her ability to create and invoke strong relationships with their followers. Given my character strengths of sociability, integrity, assertiveness, and my drive to connect to others on a deeper level, I value both the authentic and the transformative leadership theories.
This paper summarizes the article written by Cam Caldwell, Rolf D. Dixon, Larry A. Floyd, Joe Chaudoin, Johnathan Post, and Gaynor Cheokas regarding the need for a new type of leadership in today’s social work environment, defined as Transformative leadership. The article itself varies in the definition, however in a broad sense Transformative leadership is maintaining good moral standing and sound business ethics among employees and individuals inside and outside the workplace. However, in order to reach this theoretical level of business related moral and ethical leadership known as
In the healthcare field, nursing leaders and managers face consistent issues in their respective practices that force them to alter the way they work and the way they think. In taking on a role as a leader within the field, nursing leaders and managers also take on the role of ensuring that work within an organization runs smoothly regardless of new issues that may arise in the healthcare arena. For instance, in today's healthcare environment, the issues of nurse shortage and nurse turnover have the capacity to alter the healthcare field and many of its respective branches and organizations should these problems not be managed properly by the leaders in the field. In viewing the issue at hand and in discovering how nursing leaders and managers are expected to act, and do act, in order to approach this issues, along with pinpointing the best approach possible to aid this issue, one can better understand which leadership styles are necessary for leaders to function.
