Introduction The subject of transgender people has been in the forefront of mainstream news in 2015 with the hugely popular Vanity Fair front page picture and story on Caitlyn Jenner. This was the culmination of months of speculation and rumours regarding the transgender status of the former United States Olympic decathlon gold medal winner from the 1976 Olympics. After the Olympics, Jenner went onto further fame as the stepfather of Kim Kardashian with appearances on the reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Caitlyn Jenner’s feature on the cover of Vanity Fair turned her into the most famous transgendered woman in the world. She also achieved another world record by becoming the fastest person on Twitter to reach one million …show more content…
Transgender individuals were surveyed by Trans Media Watch through questionnaires about how they felt about the representation of transgendered people in the media (Kermode 2). Trans Media Watch is a volunteer charity that aims to improve the media’s coverage of transgender and intersex issues. They surveyed 256 transgendered people who ranged in age from one individual at 13 years of age to two other individuals between 76 to 80 years of age (Kermode 2). Seventy-eight percent of the respondents answered that media portrayal of the transgender population were inaccurate (Kermode 6). Almost all the respondents (95%) felt that the media did not care whether their portrayal of the transgender community was accurate or not (Kermode 6). Positive transgender media representation would help transgender individuals to deal with their personal uncertainties and allow them to be able to have conversations with others about being transgender. Negative items in the media about transgender individuals created harm to the reputation of transgender people and it labelled them as social outsiders. Newspapers were identified as being a major source of challenging content regarding transgender people (Kermode 8). Specifically, the tabloid newspapers were highlighted as having the most transphobic content. The media …show more content…
They have been portrayed in theatre and other productions as deluded “blokes in dresses (Avery).” These depictions can be linked to the ongoing verbal and physical abuse often suffered by transgender people in society. To combat these transgender inaccuracies, All About Trans is a project that works to change the way that British media portrays transgender people. They encourage making personal connections between media professionals and the transgender community. All About Trans organizes two-hour get-togethers with key media people to stimulate open conversations, questions, and sharing with a group of transgender people. Two hundred transgender volunteers have had meaningful interactions
All in all, the documentary The Middle Sexes covers many controversial topics. Some of these topics include the biology of middle sexes, the dangers of being a transgender, and societies outlook on transgenders. With much analysis, I’ve realized that this film has too narrow of a perspective on transgenders and middle sexes. The restricted perspective prevents the audience from being
The documentary “Being Me” produced by Catherine Scott is about young transgender children becoming more comfortable coming out and transitioning at a younger age. This documentary focuses on one main child, her name is Isabella, but they also show older transgender adults and they show a teenager trans. They interview them asking questions about when they knew, how they coped, how their parents and family members reacted, and what they want to do about it in the future. This is an ongoing social issue that seems to becoming more popular.
This research has taken a narrative methodolgy as this approach recognises that realities are socially constructed, and that human actions and agency are contingent on socio cultural, political and historical influences (Gill and Goodson, 2011). Using in depth semi structured interviews will ensure that trans-people have the best opportunity to express their story and impart the information that they feel is important to them. A structured interview approach would endanger the research in that the questions would have to be chosen prior to data collection and therefore could reflect assumptions the researcher had made and as the information shared is
More and more projects are appearing which attempt to document personal narratives of transgender people. “We should be the ones to write our own story. And we should be talking about the living as well as the dead. We should be offering young trans women just starting to think about themselves as such the hope that they will be able to live long and happy lives” (Thom). Through the newfound accessibility the internet provides, I found a number of new but growing sources of trans oral history available. From personal blogs and video diaries to anthology collections, these resources show actual faces, telling real stories of survival and perseverance. The anecdotes they tell don’t even have to be particularly happy ones; any shared experiences can create a sense of community and camaraderie. For trans teens, having access to people who are struggling with the same obstacles as they are results in the creation of this community, producing the feeling of “I’m not alone”. One specific example I found is called “To Survive on This Shore”, a compilation of photos and interviews of transgender people over the age of fifty. For a teenager who has been told their life expectancy is 23 years, seeing a photo of someone from within their community like 53 year old Charley saying “I am such a whole person now, for going through this. I'm more happy with life,” may just be the encouragement needed to keep them alive. Personal narratives give
I want to study how individuals perceive people that are transgender. I’m interested in studying the topic since the transgender individuals are misunderstood in society. They are misunderstood based on the fact that they don’t follow the gender norms that society has or the term of transgender. Understand their social environment. How the transgender people are perceived in the family, education, religion, economic and political institutions. Studying how they are faced with transphobic due to the lack of knowledge about the transgender people. But Most importantly, how there is a lack of equality rights for the transgender people due to the fact that the society lacks understanding of the transgender people. Hoping to find out how the transgender people are views when they have, so I could approach them as a competent social a competent social worker and
The Transgender community is now the topic of pop culture discussion. From Bruce Jenner making his reveal as Caitlin, to many transgender awareness campaign, it is no longer hidden from the public eye, but what has society done to help welcome this new community. Like in the sixties early seventies the gay community has been bash socially and lawfully, it has taken over forty years for the gay community to make as many strides as they have today from the recognition of gay marriage to the militaries use of the don't ask don’t tell law being formally repealed. Although the gay community struggles have seemed to disappear the Transgender community is still struggling. Some of this is due to the fact that people don't have much knowledge of this community. Being Transgender a
All these facts prove that some American journalists and television hosts do not even have a basic understanding of sensitive topics and stereotypes, which must not be raised during a conversation with a transgender person what in turn demonstrates the extent, to which negative stereotypes and ignorance are widespread in popular culture. Oliver also argues that such a lack of awareness provokes prejudices against transgender people in popular culture and results in a very hostile attitude towards them and subsequent discrimination or other problems, including increased risk of poverty, physical and verbal abuse as well as suicide attempts. Oliver's observation also demonstrates that the situation with cultural acceptance of transgender people
The depiction of transgender women characters in mainstream television has been offensive, insulting and derogatory. An article from GLADD called “Victims or Villains: Examining Ten Years of Transgender Images on Television”, examines 102 episodes and storylines on mainstream television that contained transgender characters since 2002. Of these, more than half were characterized as containing negative representations of transgender. In 2007 only 1% of television series had a recurring transgender character, which has slowly increased to 4% in 2013.
Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce Jenner, is an American television personality and retired athletic champion. Jenner’s name and gender change became official on Sept. 25, 2015 and she is now one of the most famous openly transgender people in the world. Thousands of articles have been written about her and I plan to compare two that contrast each other greatly. The first article is written by Matt Walsh for TheBlaze, an independent news and entertainment television network and website, with locations across the United States. The second article is written by Meredith Talusan for The Guardian, a British national daily newspaper. Walsh’s article, titled “Calling Bruce Jenner a Woman Is an Insult to Women” has a negative take on Jenner’s transition. In contrast, Talusan welcomes the positive affirmation of Jenner’s gender identity in “Do you applaud Caitlyn Jenner because she is brave, or because she 's pretty?” and reminds readers that the forces of economic privilege and beauty standards affects most trans women.
For our project, we decided to focus on the risks and discrimination that transgender individuals often face in their daily lives. For our community involvement piece, we decided to create an interactive display that included statistics and discrepancies that represent the prevalence of certain difficulties that plague the transgender community. These facts included issues ranging from sexual abuse to suicide rates. We chose statistics that seemed relatively surprising and made the poster interactive by concealing the numbers and percentages with folds covering them, allowing people to guess the statistics beforehand. Our goal for the involvement piece was to shock farrand residents so that it would both educate and impact them.
Transexuality is socially and polticially constructed as a threat to both male and heterosexual privilege. In the media especially, the feminization of trans gender women is exploited through hyper sexualized and hyper feminized images, reinforcing a superficial femininity that ultimately only serves as an artificial mask. Through images of glamour the construction of the female body acts as a canvas suitable for a variety of socially impacting messages and stereotypes. By presenting transexuality through the socially acceptable depictions of “deceptive or pathetic” society consumes a type of social conformity and “enlightened sexism” manufactured by the media- positioning women as figures designed for the realm of representation, rather than knowledge.
One of the most complex and diverse populations of people are those categorized as transgender. These people are very often the subject of intense scrutiny, discrimination, ostracism, verbal harassment and even physical assault. These responses to a transgendered person often stems from a lack of understanding, confusion, fear, and anxiety when interacting with these people. In order to understand why people are so unsettled when in the presence of a transgender individual, it is essential to fully understand the term transgender.
Transgenderism has become more public as there have been multiple celebrities coming forth and sharing their stories (Catalano & Shlasko, 2013), though the transgender movement began taking place in the
The transgender community is one that I have not fully researched and explored in my lifetime, I have seen many protest and movements on social media but never took it upon myself to research the significance of the transgender community or how it impacts my life and the lives around me. I have many people close to me that have transitioned and are apart of this amazing community and I feel that in some ways I owe them to do my research and understand this community in a better light. Throughout this paper I will be discussing the transgender community and what that entails. I will speak about a few issues that the trans community faces on a regular basis and then narrowing in on two specific issues: Sexual Assault against transgender individuals and the bathroom controversy. Before I speak about the issues facing the transgender community, I believe it will be beneficial to define some important terminology to get us as a society to understand differences between gender, sex, etc.
The video assigned, follows five transgender individuals between the ages of 20 and 50 who have agreed to discuss their lives openly. A couple of them agreed to share their surgeries on film. The documentary was enlightening and presented some very real issues that the transgender community is facing today. Most of the individuals shared common thoughts when discussing their childhood, issues with discrimination, family reactions and reasons behind having surgery. However there were differences in regards to the type of surgery the individuals decided to undergo.
