Expression is everything. In the quote from Angel Haze she says that, “True artistic expression lies in conveying emotion.” This is taken literally in Unkei’s wooden statue Nio, which brings an extra sense of imagination along when viewing the statue. For example, one might believe features of the statue alone portray flamboyance and disgust through exaggerated posture, facial expression, and hand gesture. With his weight mostly to one side and his hips slanted it gives of the impression that he has attitude which is commonly associated with feistiness and flamboyance. Other examples for more current and popular works would be from the movie Mean Girls. The same or similar exaggerated posture can be seen numerous times throughout the film.
Artists in the early 1900s commonly utilized techniques of distortion and exaggeration, characteristics of expressionism, to establish the element of emotion. According to Wolf (2017), expressionist artists often incorporate “swirling, swaying, and exaggeratedly executed brushstrokes to convey the turgid emotional state of the artist reacting to the anxieties of the modern world” (p. 1). Amplification of the human figure often evokes strong emotions for audiences of many different cultures. Additionally, the style reflects the consequences of urbanization, such as the alienation of individuals in society (Wolf, 2017). Expressionism allows artists to surpass realism and reflect the tribulations of living in a modern society.
In the movie Mean Girls (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEQV2OJVBx4), there is a scene where the Plastics all go to visit Regina George’s house (Regina is the Queen Bee of the Plastics). In this scene we meet Regina’s mom who greets the girls like they are all friends, she then proceeds to tell the girls that there are no rules in the house. This is apparent when we then see how Regina speaks to her mother, and how she treats others throughout the duration of the movie.
Standing in front of this sculpture, the viewer can feel the wind whipping around them and the sea spraying you in the face. The energy and motion add to the dramatic effect that immediately draws the viewer in. This dramatic effect is created by the lines of the figure. Nike’s elongated wings catch your eye and create a lengthy transverse line which adds to the drama. The drapery that clothes the figure has the same
The characters in the movie, Mean Girls, and in the novella, Bartleby the Scrivener, perfectly embody the benefits versus risks of conformity and self reliance. The movie and book work well in conjunction as they are cautionary stories for the extremes of either side of conformity or self reliance, showing that a medium between either end of the spectrum is best.
Art of the Egyptians and Africans express ………………………..In art, style is a characteristic, or a number of characteristics that we can identify as constant, recurring, or coherent.(Art Terminology 1) Artists express their emotions through their art-making, their finished product will reflect that emotion. They might also create a piece of art that makes the viewer create an emotional response. Emotion is any strong agitation of the feelings actuated by experiencing love, hate, fear, etc.(Dictionary 1)
Since the beginning of time, artists have labored extensively to find innovative ways to convey sentiment, passion, and feeling. Telling stories and trying to unlock the minds of people through different avenues of artistic labors. Art touches and affects people in unique ways; it can have special or unusual meaning on the person depending on how one views it. Artists’ rendering of their art is interpreted in numerous ways by others who view it unless it is explained by the artist on its meaning giving a clear example of what they are portraying. Two people looking at the same painting, sculpture, portrait, or photo may come to different views on the arts meaning even though they are looking
Deciding what is most important in life is often a struggle, especially during high school. Mean Girls is a teen comedy film loosely based on the self-help book titled Queen Bees and Wannabes. The main character is a high school student named Cady that just moved from Africa and has been homeschooled her whole life. The American culture and society she is introduced to is embodied by the Plastics, who are the most popular girls at North Shore High: Regina, Gretchen, and Karen. The pressure put on Cady by society causes her to struggle to decide what her priorities should be. Mean Girls criticizes the traditional notions of femininity that are expected of women, as they are not required for them to be successful and accomplished.
The right leg is in front of the left leg , and the body has perfect posture , the head is looking straight ahead as if the person is heading towards something or sees something interesting. Joshua C. Taylor says “ The figure in Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, strides forth , a symbol of vitality and strength, yet its impetuous steps rest lightly on the ground as if the opposing air gives the figure wings.”
If a high school girl can claim they have never been bullied or saw a bullying interaction, they are lying. World wide, girls have to live up to people's standards on how to be so called “perfect”. Many stories and magazines have had stories about girls living up to being perfect. In the movie Mean Girls, girls can relate to the characters and think of situations that happen in their own schools. Girl bullying is also portrayed in the novel Speak. Melinda, the main character, was bullied her entire freshman year of high school because she called the cops at one party. In real life and in both these narratives, the authors use situation from high school to show how bullying is growing more than we realize.
It may sound strange at first to say that I would like to use this question as an opportunity to compare The Maltese Falcon to Mean Girls, but I feel as though the portrayals of women in each one of these films is worthy of comparison. Even though these films were released more than half a century apart, there are aspects of the films that are remarkably similar, namely the way women are portrayed within them and the ways men are (or are not) implicated in the misconduct of their female counterparts.
The woman depicted in the sculpture stands straight and tall. Her large scale along with her posture gives her a powerful appearance. Her expression is serene and composed. She does not exhibit much emotion. Instead, she is shown as being stoic and controlled. She looks straight ahead, and her entire body points forward.
The film was a great depiction of what women experience in society. For instance, after her was sexually assaulted he was asked why he was wearing a short sleeve shirt and shorts. More simply, the film illustrated how women are abused and blamed for the abuse they experience. In addition, I enjoyed how the film displayed the way women are typically treated. The film showed how women are treated but it is often overlooked because society has normalized the behavior.
Her face gives little away about her emotions or feelings yet she boldly renders herself in such shocking paintings of herself. She does this intentionally to give a sense of
more on the emotion of the thing. E.g. there is a painting of a man
The most important trait in defining art is its beauty. As complex as the term “art” can be, the term “beauty” is nearly just as complicated. In order to understand art more clearly it is important to understand beauty. “We label an object beautiful because it promotes an internal harmony or ‘free play’ of our mental faculties; we call something ‘beautiful’ when it elicits this pleasure.” (Freeland 8). As defined above, beauty is not a direct message. It is something that subconsciously allows man to feel good and pleasurable. There is “an internal harmony” when we observe something beautiful that allows us to take away a deeper understanding of a work of art regardless of it being “nice looking” or “ugly”.
