Most people have things they desire in life like money or other goods. However, almost everyone has one thing that they really want in life, whether it is health or happiness. The one thing is your true desire. My true desire is to have my dad back to normal and regain moments not spent with him.
My father had lymphoma and needed a stem cell transplant. One important step of the transplant was to go to clinics to collect enough healthy stem cells to transplant into his body. The actual transplant was done in the hospital. There was also a long period of recovery from the transplant in the hospital, and my dad's immune system was comprised, so my family or anyone around him could not be sick. It was stressful to know that he had to
On May 2, 2012, the National Football League lost one of its elite players to suicide: Junior Seau. This greatly shocked the football world and its image of Junior Seau as a person, but it soon realized the cause for his action. Shortly after Seau’s death, researchers examined Seau’s brain and found that it contained a disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy which is formed
Desire – power and status. antithesis is death, moth, Stanley and Blanche, domestic violence, (chauvinistic), desire to be loved. She was bought to New Orleans literally by a streetcar that was named ‘Desire’, and also by desire in several other ways: her sexual desires and reliance on her body for pleasure meant her reputation and dignity were damaged at the Flamingo hotel and in Laurel where she was forced to leave her job as a school teacher, apparently taking an interest in younger boys; this kind of sexual desire is still something of a drive for her, yet she is not aware of its dangers; and her continuing desire, in an American Dream-like fashion, to re-find the gentility that Belle Reve and her dainty previous lifestyle beheld. It is
desire something you have to turn those desires into goals and set out on a path that leads to
In his essay “The Achievement of Desire,” Richard Rodriguez has certain ways of speaking and caring. In particular, he focuses on his education and his family. These two will eventually clash and interfere with each other. Rodriguez contrasts school, family, teachers and most importantly himself. He also tells us how left his childhood and family for education, but when he wanted to return he couldn’t fully do so. He learned he couldn't fully return due to his conforming to education that leads him to observe and analyze everything.
In Rodriguez’s essay “Achievement of Desire”, Rodriguez makes a conclusion to his own life with all the experience he have. In the last part, he mentions “If, because of my schooling I had grown culturally separate from my parents, my education finally had given me ways of speaking and caring about that fact” (pg. 560). Which means that his gave him the ways to how education separates him with his family. This is indeed the main focus of the essay. First, it is the separation of his family his deep down feelings. Second, is what he feels regarding to his family and the way that he is not proud of his family and parents. Third, is when he sees what sacrifices he has done in order to be at the place he is right not and what he has gained from those sacrifices.
In Rodriguez’s “Achievement of Desire”, he speaks of more than just becoming the top of the class. In Rodriguez’s words, education is more than simply listening to teachers and absorbing information to the best of one’s ability. He presents almost the same argument Friere does in his essay “The Banking Concept of Education”. That argument is that learning is not simply the professor telling the student the information, but rather the two interacting with each other. Richard Rodriguez speaks of how, as a student, studied and worked as hard as he could, which slowly alienated him from his family, friends, and environment. He even mentions how his family’s language and culture was looked down upon by the academics he aspired to be like. Rodriguez decided that his lack of family relationship and his general personality was something he did not want in life. He presents himself from three different perspectives in “Achievement of Desire”: as the child Rodriguez, as the older Rodriguez, and as the writer of the essay.
In “The Achievement of Desire”, Richard Rodriguez’s argument seems to be of himself struggling with an internal conflict between becoming what he and Hoggart have deemed a “scholarship boy”; and retaining his own Spanish culture. His conflict ranges from his own desire to want to become more like the teachers he idolizes, to the rich cultural and societal values his parents have, to the realization of what he has become. Some of these experiences have benefited him, and others could be considered to have hurt him, maybe both. It truly depends on the values that the reader holds dear, that one can judge these circumstances. In my view he has benefited greatly from his experiences; and has transformed himself into what every student should strive
Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women written by Geraldine Brooks shows what it is like to be a woman in the Middle East. It is mainly about how Islamic women have persevered the demanding, expectations of their lives. It takes place in the Middle East specifically, Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. It features the lives of many women, including the wives and daughters of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. Not only does the book tell the stories of these women, but it also addresses the religious standings about the etiquette these women should have. Brooks features decades of history in the book from Muhammad to king Saddam Hussein while also discussing the treatment of Muslim women from beginning to end. She gives a face and a voice to the veiled women of Islam as it retold their stories about Islamic feminism and restricting laws.
Richard Rodriguez’s “the Achievement of Desire” is a reflective essay written to inform students about the woes of being a “scholarship boy” (338-355). As Rodriguez describes, the scholarship boy is a student who follows the educational game plan to the extreme. Rodriguez identifies as the scholarship boy who is determined to become like the teachers he has encountered. This need for education has unforeseen consequences. Rodriguez faces problems in his social life, academic life, and home life. In “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education, Paulo Freire describes an education system built on ideals where a student must become like his teacher in order to be successful. Because of this fact, Rodriguez’s idea of the “scholarship boy” coincides with the ‘banking’ concept of education.
Education has been a topic of discussion in society for a long as civilization has been around. The way our children are taught has been an everlasting argument filled with people who believe their way is the correct way. Everybody seems to have an opinion about how schools should be run and how things should be taught. Three authors; Paulo Friere, Richard Rodriquez, and Mary Louise Pratt all wrote pieces that give their opinion of the correct way to run the way our children are taught. Paulo Freire, which is the author of “The banking concept of Education” believes that way students are being taught is totally wrong. Freire describes the banking education one where students are just waiting to be told information by the teacher and they will
A vision quest is a search for the meaning or purpose of your life (Native Art in Canada). This quest includes 3 main elements: fasting, solitude, and nature. It is designed to create a change in a person’s body, emotions, mind, or imaginations. (Circles of Air and Stone) You usually go to an isolated location where you have to search for food and water for a couple of days, depending on how deep of a change you are looking for. Since some of the quests were religious, participants would engage in prayer throughout the quest (Encyclopaedia Britannica).
Sexuality is very diverse, in some instances normality is based on the cultural context of the individual's society. In "The other side of desire" by Daniel Bergner, the author goes in depth into the lives of four individual's whose lust and longing have led them far down the realms of desire. to live to the fullest. I also want to support myself and not depend on someone to take
Philosophically, desire is the fuel for achieving success. Desire fuels motivation and perseverance. Everything in life begins with a desire or yearning for success. I will use success as the primary example. Success can be viewed as short term or long term goals. The sole reason for achieving a goal is desire. Achieving happiness through experiences is real. While on the other hand, acquiring happiness through possessions is ambiguous. The reason for the ambiguity is because humans are unpredictable when it comes to self-joy. Some humans may be ecstatic over possessions while others regret the time and effort put into gaining possessions because of the pain that has been caused along the journey.
Blind ambition means to be ambitious about a goal or something that you want without knowing why you want it or how you are going to get it. I also believe that blind ambitious means that a person could be ambitious about something for the wrong reasons or they could go about getting that achievement in the wrong way. Ambition is a good thing to have, it’s what helps us achieve the goals that we want. We need to push ourselves to achieve our goals because things don’t just fall in our laps, we have to work for them. I believe that a good example of blind ambition is a person who hurts someone else to get the promotion that they want. This person would be so blind to what they think they need that they won’t care that they hurt others to get
