The year of 2017 flew by. Life threw me several new experiences and friendships. In the Spring, I completed my last semester of high school and chose not to do track so I could embrace the time leading up to graduation. I was a Senior Mentor for an awesome group of freshman and spent a lot of my free time practicing Indian Dance for Rock Bridge’s Global Village and running. I experienced True False Film Festival for the first time with my mom and gave me new insight to poverty and community. We followed that up with the Wild and Scenic Film Festival which I also highly recommend. For Spring Break, the Baumer family drove to Louisiana and spent most of our time canoeing the Bayou and relaxing at the beach. (Josh and I chased an alligator with

North By Northwest is a thriller, mystery and crime film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, that was released in 1959 during the midst of the Cold War era. He depicts the United States Government and their use of spies during the time. When reading about the covert operations used by the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War it is astonishing how little the general public knew about the affairs of the government. The film centres on the character of Roger Thornhill, an advertising executive who finds himself mistaken as a United States spy - George Kaplan. Reference to cold war as Edger Hoover said communist were inflicting in corrupting ‘’various spheres of American lives’’.Ultimately, this resulted in a incredible paranoia and
The Frontline film Separate and Unequal discussed about creating a new school system; however, there are opposition by others who wants to maintain the current school system. If we look at the perspectives of the two groups, it is understandable in why there is support and opposition from the people of the city. The supporters of the new system wants a system that can provide better opportunities for their children without any violence. As the film claimed “the school was not teaching and were only babysitting the children”, which was likely a reason why there was a need for a new school system. With the chaotic and uncontrollable situation in the current system, many supporters have push forward the idea of a new system in a new city. From
The event I attended was a movie called The Hunting Grounds. It was about sexual assault on campuses all over the United States and how many campuses had been ignoring the fact that there were assaults on their campuses and blamed it on the fact that the victims were dressed a certain way or that there was alcohol involved. The general idea was that it was the victims fault that they got assaulted, and the college or university had little to no consequences for their perpetrator. This event was of interest to me because I had heard good reviews about the movie, plus it was a learning opportunity to see what the process is like for other schools who have to deal with sexual assault. It was interesting to see how each school had a different
I completed the Human Rights and Social Justice Pathway. From the courses I took for Pathway, I was able to make several connections with my fellow classmates. Especially for the classes that required working with groups, I got along with several of my classmates and have been able to create social networks. Even after some of those classmates have graduated and moved away, we still keep in touch to talk about social issues that occur, events that may interest one of us, or just to help one another through difficult times. Personally, I do not think I would have been able to make these connections if I had not joined Pathways. I originally was only a psychology major, but after joining Pathways, there were several sociology classes that interested me, therefore, I added sociology as my minor. Many

In 2016, NASA dedicated the Katherine G. Johnson Building in honor of the outstanding discoveries Mrs. Johnson made while assisting in the Race to Space. The movie, Hidden Figures, produced in 2016 as a dramatic documentary, assisted in shedding light on the story of three magnificent women who set to change not only space, but the world Americans live in today, as a reflection of events from the Civil Rights Era. Hidden Figures, depicts events such as the launch of John Glenn, the bombing of the Freedom Riders bus in Aniston, Alabama, and the transition of segregation to integration within NASA. From the actions of Katherine, Dorothy, and Mary, the views of women within the workforce engaged society in the Civil Rights Movement as well
Orson Welles had a long career full of unexpected rises and falls that was marked by his personal desire to wow audiences and habitual straying from conventional means of entertainment. From his The War of Worlds broad cast that caused audiences to fear for their lives, to his performance in The Third Man, Welles strove to be memorable and invite audiences to rise to his standards of entertainment. He fancied himself a magician; a theme that helped progress his 1973 film F for Fake. Starting with his explosive youth into his last years, Welles accumulated several habitual stylistic and narrative devices. Even as his films diversified his stylistic themes continued to be common throughout, and the release of his questionable documentary in last portion of life proved to continue this trend.
Over the past decade globalisation has been viewed as a concept in its promise of cultural and economic collaboration, of democratic unity in diversity- in turn Globalisation invites and resists what is perceived as coercive imperial conformity. Therefore, it is no shock when director Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu seized upon this newly sacred subject and portray it in a unique and unprecedented manor. The film weaves four interconnected plotlines set in four different countries. Juxtaposing many aggressively contrasting narratives, settings and characters, Babel portrays both the impacts of globalisation on the modern world and the effects it has on the individual. The film is unprecedented in the respect that it fascinatingly
After watching the movie Recount, I feel that the 2000 Presidential race was unfair. I felt that Al Gore, Vice President, should have won. At the point when one of the systems said that Bush had won the race, Gore was down by around 1,784 votes in Florida after an individual from Gore's campaign discovered that the machines added more than 3000 votes to Bush. I believe that it's completely ludicrous that the machines utilized for the Unified States Presidential Election could have miscalculations of this size, and that it is possible more votes could have been accounted for in Bush’s favor. It is unacceptable for mishaps like this to occur due to the drastic effect it has on the outcome of the election. Another issue that took place during the 2000 election process was the issue of the dimpled chads; which in all actuality could have been resolved if more genuine regulations were put into action.
In Mayberry with very little crime to solve going on Andy was able to help the folks in the community with whatever issues or troubles they might have going on in their life. The community members helped each other regardless of social position or personal failing. If compared to our times that would be hardly the case because there is so much crime in this world that we forget to help those that need help because we are trying to stop the crime that goes on day to day. Just about with every episode it pertains to someone being sensitive to someone else’s needs, feelings or problems. If there are problems in Mayberry they tend to be small and easy to solve. Sherriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) using his wit and wisdom helps solve the majority of the towns problems.
Throughout this class, various discussions and blogs have been used to analyze the different elements of films such as theme, cinematic techniques and genre. It is time to bring all of these separate elements together in the analysis of one specific film, according to class text, “analyzing levels of meaning below the surface story can greatly enhance enjoyment as well as understanding of a film” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014. p. 10.03). There are several different approaches to film analysis including formalist, auteurist, and generic or any combination thereof. Utilizing a genre theory lens, the 1956 film The Searchers will be analyzed addressing contextual information, story/plot, aesthetic choices, social/personal impact and how these areas come together to develop the film.
In Hidden Figures the people at NASA are trying to solve a math problem, so they can send someone into space. They are in a race with the USSR to see who can get into space first. John Glenn is the man that would be going into space. He is putting his life in NASA’s hands. He preferred that the numbers/problems that would determine if he lived, worked out.
