Summary This briefing will address the necessities of United Nations to pressure the Democratic People of the Republic Korea, also known as North Korea, by adding sanction to the country. As a hegemonic state, the United States is a significant state to play a role as the leader to enforce DPRK to withdraw itself from the threat of the global security and morality. DPRK had broken many regulations of the UN treaties on militarization, nuclear activities, and violation of human rights. Although the US is one the countries that has the most stock of nuclear weapons , it is aware of its destructiveness and vulnerability more than any country that hold nuclear weapons today. After continuous negotiations to suspend its conductivity of nuclear activities, DPRK had repeatedly engaged and disengaged its pursuit for a nuclear reform. Should the U.S. violate DPRK sovereignty and prioritize world peace and order? As an established great militarily powerful state, the United States must persuade the UN to keep adding sanctions against the DPRK. Background Korea as One It is necessary to know the process of how Democratic People of the Republic of Korea was established and how its brutality and thirst for power became unmanageable. DPRK was not a demonic state since birth. It was once an empire with both the North and South, together with a connected peninsula. However, once imperialism and colonialism took its full throttle between the industrial states, Korea was no longer an
Kim Jongun, has mentioned before that he wants the world to look up to his strong country as a nuclear power, rather than just a mere country with multiple sanctions shouting big words. This in the past has led to various consequences from hegemonies all around the world who feel threatened by the implications of a young tyrant in charge of ICBMs. This is a clear example of the security dilemma in which the entire world, the anarchy that it is, has to control minor nations that strive for hegemony at the expense of the larger nations’ security and loss of leverage. Unfortunately, it seems that despite the clear warnings from the superior nations, the North Korean dictator has no interest in abiding by international rules and is far more fascinated with realist ideologies of projections of power.
There is no disbelief that the United States has had historical conflicts with North Korea’s dictatorial leaders. Currently there have been passing threats from North Korea’s dictatorial leader Kim Jung Un to US president Donald Trump. Using current international approaches to the North Korean nuclear problem-solutions are based on the logic of crime and punishment. “According to this approach, North Korea’s crimes – possession of nuclear weapons and violation of UN resolutions – must be punished through forceful, comprehensive sanctions. Such sanctions, the thinking goes, will cause so much discomfort in the North that the regime will be at risk of collapse and Kim Jung Un will be compelled to choose denuclearization (Moon, 2016, pg. 343).” Policy makers ideally want to ensure that foreign policy is perfected to the best of their knowledge and that national security is performing to the best of their ability. “America’s main motive has always been denuclearization in line with its nonproliferation policy, especially after post 9/11 security concerns (Petrželová, 2017, pg. 10).” To avoid similar events to 9/11 posed by North Korea, policy makers should allow counterterrorism tactics to be executed as thoroughly as possible. The protection and safety of US citizens should always be a top priority for government agencies and policy makers. Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s
Due to North Korea being unable to cooperate and help their own citizens, this allows the international community and united nations to work together and get involved. It is the matter of safety for the people and for the world. All that was asked of North Korea was transparent with their Nuclear program. However, North Korea, being unable to cooperate with the United Nations clearly shows that North Korea does not care for their citizens or the world. Nuclear weapons can be used against any country at any given time and these weapons are very powerful. By becoming knowledgeable on North Korea's nuclear weapons we can prevent wars and provide safety for all countries around the world. Furthermore, United States stands to better the world and the safety of the citizens. It is up to you if you decide to side with the safety of the world or the nuclear weapons in North Korea, where humanity is
Since its origin in 1948, North Korea has been isolated and heavily armed, with hostile relations with South Korea and Western countries. It has developed a capability to produce short- and medium-range missiles, chemical weapons, and possibly biological and nuclear weapons. In December 2002, Pyongyang lifted the freeze on its plutonium-based nuclear weapons program and expelled IAEA inspectors who had been monitoring the freeze under the Agreed Framework of October 1994. As the Bush administration was arguing its case at the United Nations for disarming Iraq, the world has been hit with alarming news of a more menacing threat: North Korea has an advanced nuclear weapons program that, U.S. officials believe, has already produced one or
Because of numerous efforts by countries such as North Korea and Syria, the competition for acquiring nuclear weapons has escalated from what it was formerly. As this expands over time, it will increase the chance for another international conflict. In order to prevent this from happening, a substantial idea is to have the United Nations address this issue. With it’s vast amount of members, the UN can set a guideline for all its countries that limits the amount of weapons they are allowed to possess. By doing this, it will aid in relieving the tension occurring between multiple nations and provide international
In February 2014, a report was released by the Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The report detailed a number of human rights abuses that the country has allegedly committed. Because of the report a United Nations committee has called for the Security Council to refer North Korea to the International Court (ICC) for committing crimes against humanity. Using the report that the Commission issued as a guideline, I will examine whether or not it is plausible to state that the United States of America should be indicted for crimes against humanity as compared to the DPRK. Representatives of North Korea have stated that the United States needs to accept the accusations of the broad international community. It seems that North Korea thinks that the United States has committed crimes against humanity. Whether or not there is validity in that statement, it is worth investigating and comparing.
“If we push the buttons to annihilate the enemies even right now, all bases of provocations will be reduced to seas in flames and ashes in a moment" (Ellyatt). The United Nations was founded on a basis of maintaining peace and providing a place for international cooperation and compromise. Thus, North Korea’s nuclear program is an issue to be discussed as it threatens international security. The United States believes in dealing swiftly and harshly with North Korea and is willing to retaliate should attacks occur. The United States believes that the North Korean nuclear program can be dealt with by cutting off North Korean funds, resources, and allies, imposing harsher punishments on North Korea, and taking direct military action.
For these reasons military interventions are out of the question. The United States will continue to remain strong alliances with South Korea and include a close coordination of policy towards North Korea. The DPRK will not be giving up their weapons but promised to not make any further developments if the previous sanctions are nullified and an aiding program is provided. The current situation shows that both countries are experiencing the prisoner’s dilemma whereas mutual credibility and cooperation will bring benefits to both countries and solve this dilemma. Not knowing when another attack or a devastating incident might occur, the United States will like to finally ask for the other delegations’ support of such measures that has a bright prospective focusing on deterring the usage of nuclear weaponry of DPRK. The United States of America is resolute of making changes and this delegate hopes to reach an effective
The intervention of the US marks its first use of military force that bypassed the United Nations Security Council. Since the Korean war, the United States will bypass UN Security Council again and again to act as “The World Police” and intervene in other’s countries conflicts. It also marks the beginning of the long-lasting conflict and tension between North and South Korea, which has recently culminated in a missile crisis and an overly aggressive North Korea. To fully understand the root cause of the recent missile crisis, people should visit exhibits like this one that reveal the war that started this problem that is ever present in the news
This article informs the people of the actions of North Korea and how it affects the people in a harsh way. North Korea continues to build nuclear weapons and they do not care who disagrees. There are many nations who feel what North Korea is doing is wrong and believe that they should end their construction of deadly arms. Based on this article, North Korea has the potential of starting global outrage and chaos to the people of the
North Korea appears on the international stage as a country existing beyond the world we all know. It isolates its citizens from the rest of international community and does not obey any rules determined by international law, but requires respect and recognition. Moreover, North Korea is one of the countries that remains aggressive towards its neighbors and applies various terrorist techniques, i.e. illegal contraband, political terror and mass abductions of other countries’ citizens in its foreign policy. The reasons for which the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) behaves so unpredictably and irrationally are diversified. First of all, the DPRK as a country is managed very irrationally – regimes of Kim Il-sung and
I confess that before reading the book Korea: The Impossible Country (and taking classes in college), I did not know much about South Korea or North Korea. The focus of this book is on South Korea but as both Koreas are historically intertwined, North Korea is also many times cited or referred to in the pages of this work. Korea: The Impossible Country, written by the journalist and writer Daniel Tudor and published by Tuttle Publisher - Tokyo, is a book acclaimed by the international press. The author is a correspondent for the Economist in Korea. He is also a regular contributor to Newsweek Korea and other publications. Tudor has gained a solid educational background in the Oxford and Manchester Universities. With all these
This article deals with the United States and its attempts to deal with the dangerous matters of North Korea. Some of the problems that were brought up in this article were North Korea’s plan to restart a plutonium based nuclear program at Yongbyon, North Korea’s plan to build a new highly enriched uranium (HEU) nuclear program, and the tension that emerged between the United States and South Korea. Even though many problems were occurring, there were some positive things that were happening at the time. The United States began negotiating with North Korea and South Korea about establishing railroad links, demining portions of the demilitarized zone, allowing athletes to compete in the Asian games, and allowing abductees to visit Japan.
The very recent publication of a comprehensive report by the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea establishes credible evidence and knowledge of the situation in North Korea. With knowledge of the unparalleled conditions, the international community now has no excuse for its inaction. Although the global community faces many challenges such as issues of state sovereignty, it must remember the many human lives at stake and the fundamental right to
North Korea has threatened freedom and prosperity in the eastern hemisphere for the past 25 years. In the last 5 years, the United States has been specifically targeted by this unstable nation. North Korea possesses the missile power to be able to send nuclear warheads across the Pacific Ocean to the United States. The United Nations (U.N.) has placed new sanctions on North Korea trying to slow down their research. Their leader, Kim Jong-Un, responded by saying that they will retaliate “thousands of times” against Washington D.C. (Campbell). Several important questions have surfaced due to North Korea possessing nuclear weapons; what kind of destruction can occur if nuclear weapons were launched? How has the corrupt government in North Korea expanded this issue? Finally, how will the United States and the U.N. stop this escalating problem? With the ongoing threat of North Korea, one must realize anew the danger of nuclear weapons.
