Understanding Inter-professional Health Care Interdisciplinary health care has been cited as a possible answer to the crisis faced by the modern day health system. A team of health professionals catering to the needs of the patient promises to combat increasing complexities of diseases as well as the shortage of resources currently faced in health systems across the globe. D’Amour D, Oandasan (2005 “Journal of Interprofessional Care) argues that for “synergy as opposed to fragmentation” (Oandasan, 2005) to occur, a collaborative workforce must be guided by a governance model as well as standard protocols and procedures. To summarise methods that are used to implement inter-professional health care, the goal is for education to build a collaborative (practice-ready) workforce. To accomplish this, methods such as; curriculum development, teaching, financing, identifying patient needs, building a team environment (meetings, communicating, developing standing procedure), governance, protocols, standardization, accurate allocation, are essential. Benefits of inter-professional healthcare for patients and healthcare professionals. The benefits of a collaborative approach to patient care are many and varied, hence its need for implementation. Whether it is acute or primary care, both factions can benefit from a dedicated health team. First of all, access to health services is a crucial element to patient care. Inability to consult with a general practitioner or specialist can perpetuate minor diseases into chronic diseases, thus increasing the demand on the health system; this can also create a cyclical effect.
