The canon of literature incorporates a body of traditional texts that are regarded as being the most influential works at any given time, but I believe it should adopt more contemporary forms of storytelling such as podcasts. The 21st century has seen a technological revolution which has changed the way young adults in Colleges and Universities consume information. Thus, English curriculums should adapt podcasts in the canon of literature which would improve how literature is taught in schools. The English Department at Loyola University Maryland defines the Understanding Literature course, as being, “An introduction to literature and literary analysis, focusing primarily on poetry and short fiction. The course teaches critical concepts and …show more content…
The story follows Freytag’s pyramid dramatic structure which consists of 5 main stages but through a contemporary nonfiction story. Understanding plot structure of tragedies like Serial is a vital skill for readers to learn so they can interpret the author's purpose. During a murder case motifs and themes are predominant from cross referencing interviews of multiple witnesses and those who are close to the defence and prosecution. Allegations are made and the vilitaty of them are assessed by the court which allows readers to interpret the significance and relevance of information due to Adnan’s multiple court cases. The podcasts plot provides back story and character development which listeners become invested in, which can help students understand the power of plot development. This is crucial in court cases because the opposition and the defense paint different pictures of the one in question. These are all basic ideas that any English classes want students to learn, but Serial is a superior alternative than …show more content…
All of these stories are similar in language and context, but Serial has added value from benefits that allow listeners to enjoy the story. This form of literature can spark conversations that will inspire students to talk about race relations in America, modern media and evaluating the text. In today's society race relations in America has become a topical discussion which has no solution and as a Jesuit University we are called to be “men and women for and with others”. Adnan was not given a fair trial due to Muslim prejudice that stems from the 9/11 bombings in America. This was not the only factor that sent him into jail, but stereotypes played a factor in the prosecutions cause when Adnan had no alibi. In Universities across America discussions about racism are rarely brought up in the fear that something might happen, but as a Jesuit University we are obligated to face these heated discussions. It would be unethical for us not to talk about anything since different races are represented in our student body. This is why I think Loyola should start the trend of discusses race relations in America and how immoral society and our justice system
How to Read Literature Like a Professor is a book Thomas C. Foster uses to expose his thoughts and feelings of many literary terms and devices. Such ideas can be found in James Joyce’s short story, “The Dead”.
In How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas C. Foster teaches readers about the most commonly used symbols and their meanings and the similarities between stories.
In Thomas Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, both authors demonstrate the use of violence between characters in multiple ways. In Chapter 12 of How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Foster describes two different ways that violence is used in literature, both of which can be found in Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. In addition, both books also explore how each type of violence has a different effect on the plot and the characters. These two books are related because of their exploration of a deeper meaning of violence between two or more characters in literature and the different effects each type has.
The Serial podcast, hosted by Sarah Koenig, is about the murder of young Woodlawn High School student Hae Min Lee. Hae was a smart, ambitious, and outgoing young lady taken from this world too soon. Sarah Koenig and the podcast takes us through the ins and outs of typical and unusual teenager behavior to try and uncover something unseen in this case. Adnan Syed, the now convicted murder, and Jay Wilds, the state’s only witness, are the key people of this story. I believe Adnan’s innocence should be maintained because Jay’s story should not have been used for evidence, there was not enough evidence to even arrest Adnan, and Adnan had a trustworthy alibi.
What would you do if you a master manipulator going to jail.the Story of serial is narrated by Sarah Koening is about trying to get a guilty man out of prison. Adnan syed is a monster, a master manipulator, and a murder in jail. Jay wilds the witness that brought the murder to jail. This story is interesting because it’s story of murder getting free. I believe that adnan syed is guilty of the murder of hae min lee because he had a good motive for it and his hand print was in hae’s car.
“The Hobbit” and “How to Read Literature Like a Professor” are both very interesting books. These books have many similar and different concepts. Eating with others, eating others, quests, and geography are all concepts that are in both books.
How do memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature? How does the recognition of patterns make it easier to read complicated literature? Discuss a time when your appreciation of a literary work was enhanced by understanding symbol or pattern.
In Sarah Koenig’s podcast ‘Serial’ and Laura Ricchardi’s docudrama ‘Making a Murderer’, both use characterisation to influence the audience to determine whether the person on trial is innocent. However, in ‘Serial’ Koenig characterises Adnan in a positive way that suggest that he may be innocent, whereas in ‘Making a Murderer’ Ricchardi characterises Steven Avery in a negative way to doubt Stevens innocence. Through the use of a simile, Koenig characterises Adnan as harmless and a man of the community as she says, “…he has giant brown eyes like a dairy cow.” This influences the audience by appealing to their emotions and leading them to consider how someone that looks innocent could possibly kill someone. In addition to this simile used, an interview with Adnan’s
Thomas C. Foster, in his novel, How to Read Literature Like a Professor, gives many examples of sex being shown symbolically in literature. He imparts in the reader an idea that sex is everywhere in a typical novel, and that many details in a work-- most details, even-- are representative of sex: “Tall buildings? Male sexuality. Rolling landscapes? Female sexuality. Stairs? Sexual intercourse. Falling down stairs? Oh my” (Foster 136). And, yes-- sex is truly everywhere in The Handmaid’s Tale. The importance of sex in the dystopian society known as “Gilead” is huge; sex is what the entire Gileadian regime is based around-- reproduction, more specifically. Symbols of fertility

Classic literature is something that is seen as a work of art, a piece that is valued and a text of highest quality. They are outstanding and recognised for years, centuries and decades as they resonate through time. These books or texts are influential and hold importance throughout times. These texts should be taught in the school curricula as the views that are represented are similar to those that are important in todays society, therefore they should be an important part within with school curricula. One classic text, ‘The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn’, written by Mark Twain in 1884 and one classic movie, ‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s’, produced by Blake Edwards in 1961 are great examples of Classic literature that have similar themes and views as those that we face today. Their relevance keeps these books seeming new and fresh as the audience connects to their characters and their idealisations.
Throughout this course, we have been asked "What is humanities"? Humanities is the study of human beings by culture, the arts including theater, dance, and music. Within the humanities there are different eras that are represented such as the information age. The Information Age is a time period in our history where the traditional industry shifted to the Industrial Revolution. The Information Age is a great example of how progressively advanced a country can be in with-in a time period. This advancement in the Information Age has a discrepancy; such as the commencement of technology and the definition of digital, new methods of interaction between different people and devices. The physical component of the Information Age is a very important
Loyola University offers a myriad of ways to view, read, and understand literature. Often times the professors will ask questions in the overview for their class. The questions asked would usually revolve around how the particular theme of the class would further help the understanding of literature. The themes included disaster, war, race, family horror, feminine outlooks, religion, etc. Each professor had an individual and unique perspective on the studying and questioning of literature.
I’ve learned a lot of useful tips from this semester in ENG 201. English has never been my strong suit nor has it been my favorite class. However this college course has changed my point of view of the subject. Prior coming into college I viewed English as a useless class because I’ve already knew the basics: how to talk, read and write essays. Today I view English as an important class. It helped me in other courses that involved writing, such as World Civilization and Communications, because it allowed me to practice my skills. In my world civilization exams I had to write essays. This course helped me write an impactful essay. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that almost all of my exam scores were in the 90s, usually I do poorly in the
Throughout my two years during high school, I have learned a fairly good amount about analyzing literature. Although I am not fully confident about it, I do know the basics of analyzing literature and it is not just straightforward. Analyzing literature is not just about summarizing the text, it’s more than that. Out of the many ways of analyzing I learned to take each element of the story and looking at it “beneath the story.”
