Summary The unemployment rate remains substantially high. There are several contributing factors to consider why the unemployment rate remains so high. The unemployment rate has a lasting effect on people who have families to support. This document will review the different ways unemployment could be harmful to the health and well-being on families and of people. A weak economy is why todays unemployment crisis continues to grow and this affects people and their families. The Main Cause One of the major causes of unemployment today is the lack of capacity in the economy to create new jobs. Businesses lay off short and long-term employees, so the top dogs can continue to live their extravagant lifestyles. Financial …show more content…
Roger Martindale Patching. "Too many students, not enough jobs?: a comparative study of Australian journalism programs" (1997) American companies are more concerned with profit to concern themselves with the unemployment rate. As long as a company is netting a good profit it has little concern for how many jobs its creates. The high unemployment rate also takes its toll on the economy. The vast amount of unemployed population do not have a lot of money to spend. The poverty level increases due to the unemployment level rising. Stores compensate with lower prices to draw customers in this weak economy. Therefore the lost profits cause those businesses lay off workers. Some businesses as a result of the poor economy have gone out of business and that contributed to the number of unemployed. According to the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues’ Policy Statement “The Psychological Consequences of Unemployment,” the stress of unemployment can lead to declines in individual and family well-being (Belle & Bullock, 2011). Many people experience feelings on self-doubt when they lose their job. “The average number of persons with psychological problems among the unemployed was 34%, compared to 16% among employed individuals.”(Paul, K. I., & Moser, K., 2009) For some unemployed long-term have been known to experience extreme depression. Imagine working at a job for 7
The unemployment rate has dramatically increased over the last several months. This increase has created many complications for the American people. Although the United States economy has created over 7 million jobs, there is still a long way to go until the economy is back on track.
Having a job that meets personal satisfaction can boost one’s self-esteem but when this job is taken away, feelings start to change. The article “The Consequence-Undoing Sanity” by Louis Uchitelle, describes a slump that many people in our country are currently in. It shows one individual’s struggle after being laid off from a job. Erin, Stacy’s husband, lost all feeling when he was laid off from his job that he started right out of college, his wife somehow thought he lost part of his identity. Stacy describes in the article, “I think the layoff destroyed his self-esteem” (Uchitelle 342). Having low esteem can truly impact one’s life just like it has with Erin. Erin is impacted by the depressed feelings of losing his job that his work ethics have changed, and he is not putting in his full effort. Uchitelle expressed how Erin’s wife feels about her husband’s change in demeanor, “She doubted
There are many different age brackets, genders, and ethnicity that make up unemployment in the labor force. Some of the same people who were once in the labor force also make up the workers who are not counted in the labor force anymore. Unemployment is important to the economy and the society that we live in because the more people without any jobs and/or not having a legitimate source of income will increase crime, poverty, political unsteadiness, downgrade health standards, and mental health problems. Unemployment can also cause underemployment which is not good for the economy. Underemployment, in one of its usage, is defined as the employment of
An increase in the unemployment rate means that more individuals do not have an income, thus meaning many households suffer reduced disposable funds. This causes a decrease in the level of aggregate demand within the economy and therefore reduces economic growth. This in turn causes a slower circular flow of income, meaning that households may be forced into or past poverty, as a result of the lowered income generated, reducing the living standards and quality of life. The downturn experienced by the economy can also offset many individuals seeing them not wanting to return back to the workforce due to the lack of jobs available, making them long-term unemployed rather than cyclically unemployed, or if the firm initially was promoting structural change, structurally unemployed. Combined with poverty, the aspect of unemployment can lead to other severe mental health issues and illness reaching extremes.
Unemployment issues affects the community because they tend to have health problems, depression issues, stressed, low self-esteem issues, isolated from family and friends or tend to use some type of substance and abuse it, which happens to many of people and causes poverty within the community. When individuals have been laid off and terminated it’s a reality for many. Even though individuals may have the skills and education background that will qualify them for a new position some employers have filed the position with individuals that may not have met the requirements.
Unemployment leads to financial problems and reduces the overall purchasing capacity of our nation. Unemployment can have benefits only to for things such as being provided food and reduced rent, which is called section eight and food stamps. Poverty compared to unemployment can be described different ways for example, poverty can cause unemployment but it if someone is below the poverty threshold they might get absolutely no help from the government and can not maintain a standard of living. Living conditions can affect the way people look at you as far as a job goes. There are multiple different ways that people look in others for a jobs such as dependability, honest, and reliable. A poor person is more likely to get overlooked for a job than a person in a higher class or middle class, that could possibly tie in with the fact that low income people have a lower level of education and not being able to present themselves in a formal manner. Taking care of their children would be a difficult task being at or below the poverty line with an income lower than 20,000 a year from both adults in the
Unemployment Issues in the United States Unemployment is one top issue that our government faces on a daily basis. Many people are being unemployed as we speak. Even though the government is trying to take a lead on this major issue, the rate of unemployment is just too high. Why I feel strongly about this issue is because many of us continue to search for jobs daily and still no reply. There are many reasons behind being unemployed and those reasons are little issues that the governor himself can fix within a year or so. We are still jobless, the minimum wage is too low and most of the jobs that pay well always ask if one Spanish.
K.Moser found that unemployment was a key factor in health issues in society, mortality rates were higher for those who were unemployed and the prospect of unemployment is detrimental to the health of an individual. M.H.Brenner (1977) suggested loss of a job is like bereavement but isn’t seen or respect as such (7).
In this kind of unemployment, people usually suffer from country’s economical situations. Even people with good and healthy jobs undergo with crisis and loss their jobs just because of country’s economic policies don’t adapt changes and don’t have ability to adapt changes.
The new health problems usually start with depression. This depression will come from the realization that they cannot provide for their family like they use to anymore. It will also come from the lack of work that they are able to get to try to compensate for their loss of income. The health issue associated with the depression is anxiety. This can present as loss of sleep, jaw clenching, nausea, overeating, and alcoholism. Both of the health issues will contribute to the development of more serious health complications. The serious disease states that will develop in these patients are cardiovascular diseases and gastrointestinal issues. There have been studies performed that have shown that an individual’s risk of having an acute myocardial infarction will increase with the amount of time that they are unemployed (Dupre, 2012).
Sociologists study human society. Their subject matter includes human behaviour in various social contexts, social interaction, social institutions and organisation, social change and development (Haralmbos, Van Krieken, Smith & Holborn 1999). For this reason, unemployment is an issue which sociologists delve. Unemployment has far reaching affects in all areas of society. Stratification in the areas of age, race, class, gender, ethnicity, sex and disability is rife amongst the employed and unemployed alike, unemployment creates further segregation amongst these already stratified people. This essay will look at unemployment from the functional and conflict theory
Sociologists study human society. Their studies include human behavior in many social contexts such as social interaction, social institutions and organization, social change and development (Abraham). Because of the broad spectrum of social circumstances that are studied, unemployment is an issue in which sociologists thrive. Conflict in the areas of age, race, gender, and disability is common among the employed as well as the unemployed. From a sociological perspective, unemployment can be studied through both the Functionalist Theory and Conflict Theory. It also touches upon the results of unemployment in societies and institutions such as family, education, government, and health. Unemployment affects almost everyone to some extent
In 2011, the rate of unemployment is at 9%. Although there is a decline it has been rather slow. Financial analysts predict that unemployment rate would drop to 8%. Even for the people who still have their jobs the hours that they work have been reduced since then. With reduced hours the productivity of the workers would not be fully exploited which in the end, affects the economy. This is so because with a small fiscal base the economy has not been able to recover from recession fast enough. Although there have been positive growths in the employment rates these growths are barely enough. They do little to help in the dire situation. This only means that joblessness is something that the population would have learned to live with.
A condition that has existed since the beginning of commercialization, unemployment has been in our history since its monumental recognition in 1929. The Great Depression is really when unemployment became a real issue and its highest peaks where between 1932 and early 1933 when the average rate of unemployment was 24.9%. Fast forward almost 80 years and unemployment is still a political issue whose rate has experienced a roller-coaster ride of highs and lows. Unemployment has many forms, but it is technological unemployment, that is a crisis which if declined will lead to an excellent and a benevolent rise to our nation’s economy.
The evidence that unemployment has negative effects on mental health is strong. Mental health effects on young unemployed people include low self esteem and confidence
