Unit 3 Portfolio Assignment: Research Simulation Task
People think that animals want to be in zoos, but they really do not. In some zoos the owners or zookeepers see how the environment is making the animals feel bad or good and they try to change it by giving the animals a similar habitat to where they came from. All three stories “The Stripes Will Survive”, “The Zoos Go Wild”, and “Our Beautiful Macaws and Why They Need Enrichment” deal with protecting animals but they all do so in different ways.

putting animals in a habitat that looks like the land they originally came from was hard. But it was an important step if they want to endangered species. They made the habitats look like africa by using trees to separate territory like the wild animals would do in africa.
Oakland zoo’s animal care organization has a chance to provide animals with a healthy life and support themselves. The role of the people working with Macaws is that they keep the birds healthy medically and behaviorally. The team that is trying to give the macaws a better home used fishing nets to support the bird bath.
These three stories don’t have much in common besides the fact that they talk about zoos and animals. They also all agree that something has to be done in order to make sure these animals are safe, non-extinct, and happy. For example, “The Stripes Will Survive” is about helping Siberian Tigers and other cats overcome possible extinction by organizations coming together to set aside protected areas of land for Siberian Tigers and Cats. “ Zoos Go Wild” work to help a gorilla and other animals feel close to home by creating spaces in the zoos that look just like where then came from. Last but not least, “Our Beautiful Macaws and Why They Need Enrichment” works with Macaws to help them have more enrichment by creating a better environment for birds with supplies to support their total
One of the most fun, visually amazing functions to visit are zoo's. Growing up as a kid going to the zoo was so much fun and basically guaranteed a great day out. People have been complaining and questioning the role of zoo's for a long time now. Some claim that it actually kills the animals off faster. Others claim that zoo's actually help protect and preserve the lives of these animals. Only one can make a reasonable argument by studying sources, and finding out statistics. Based off of the articles, "The Stripes Will Survive", "The Zoos Go Wild", and "Our Beautiful Macaws and Why They Need Enrichment", we can truly get in-depth analysis about the role zoo's play.
As the animal rights movement has developed and grown substantially in recent years, there has been an increased focused on the welfare of captive animals. A popular institution that has received much attention for keeping animals captive is the zoo. Because of this focus, zoos have responded by publicizing their positive benefits for existence in order to justify keeping these animals on display. Since the term “zoo” can have a wide variety of meaning and characteristics, it is important to define what constitutes a zoo in this essay. Zoos are defined as a facility in which animals are confined within enclosures, displayed to the public, and
In the article “Zoos Are Cruel and Unnecessary,” Earth Times posed a question, “With the internet, as well as DVDs, 3D TV, etc., are zoos really necessary to teach people about animals in the 21st century?” In the response given by Liz Tyson, director of the Captive Animals’ Protection Society, she argues an animal and its environment in a zoo is “out of context” and there is no substitution for an animal’s natural habitat. Therefore, viewing animals in such environments distorts the message that a zoo’s primary purpose is to conserve these habitats in the wild. By focusing solely on the artificial habitats, Tyson fails to mention the educational opportunities that zoos and zoological parks can provide, such as interactive visitor programs, breeding and rehabilitation programs, and up-close animal encounters.
THESIS: Within the 10,000 zoos in America, hundred, 214 to be exact, have and continue to gain accreditation to become a public animal advocacy to protect and maintain animal species for years to come and through their efforts, they can better educate the civilians who enjoy visiting such attractions.
There have been many discussions about the welfare of animals since the first zoos were created. Some people agree that animals should be kept in zoo’s, they argue that it benefits the animals because their every need is catered to. However, in some zoo’s they are treated the exact opposite of being catered to. Sometimes the animals are also deprived of a natural environment that the zoo’s fail to recreate. However, zoo’s can be helpful educationally to kids. It gives them a close up on the beauty of the animals, but it comes at the animals expense.
Zoos present a certain blend of nature and culture. They have always provided a way to bring natural wildlife and urban Americans together as a means of entertainment. Yet, throughout the years the role of zoos have changed. Though once used for amusement, zoos are now being used for education on preservation and the welfare of endangered species. One may wonder where and how the idea of zoos started and just how they, and the environment around them, have changed throughout history.
“Before the early twentieth century, zoos would separate humans from the animals by using a series of moats. In the early 1900s, however, zoos “began displaying animals in realistic exhibits that mimicked actual habitats” (Gioielli, 2016, p. 1). Coupled with the more natural habitat is advancing care for the animals in captivity. More hospitals are being built for animals and better medicine is being created constantly. As a result of healthier and happier animals in increased popularity of animals in captivity. According to Carey (2016), “More than 10,000 zoos are now in operation worldwide . . . the central missions of zoos [are] not only to serve as attractions for recreation and amusement, but also to educate people and promote conservation . . .” (p. 2). Most people do not go to see animals in captivity for the sole purpose of entertainment, they also go to learn about the animals themselves. Both children and adults can learn about how to help protect endangered animals and their habitats. As a result, zoos and aquariums are continually gaining popularity. According to Gazert (2017), “Zoos and aquariums draw 181 million visitors per year in the United States--that’s over half the country’s population, and more visitors than the annual attendance of the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB games combined” (p. 2). Unfortunately, some zoos and aquariums have been known to abuse their animals. While this is not true of all zoos, but the reports of abuse have increased leading to more controversy. Because of this the idea of keeping animals in captive is harder to accept. Still, the sad truth is that animals may have to be in captivity in order to save their species. “A recent report from the World Wildlife Fund warned that without swift and substantial human intervention, over two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade” (Ganzert, 2017, p. 1). Predictions
Milan, unit 3 and 4 are assignments that surprised me as well. I thought it would be the same as first two however, that was not the case. I am not comfortable with my work so far, I do think that having a week to research and do the assignment with the exception of the discussion will greatly help me get to that goal of having that masters degree in criminal justice. this program was well planned and thought out and I am happy to have chosen bethel

Zoos have changed and found a balance between being an attraction and conservation park. Some people think zoos should protect animals to the best of their ability. For example, some zoos have upgraded animals’ living spaces so that they feel comfortable. Overall, the role of zoos is to protect animals by providing them with their basic needs, making sure they have a suitable place to live, and to save them from extinction!
From the the beginning of the year, and my last portfolio assignment, I have improved in many places that have to do with my writing skills. Throughout the year I have been assigned multiple things that have really challenged me to become a much stronger writer. One major thing that really helped me with my writing abilities has been vocabulary and grammar tuesdays because Mr. Perry truly made it a priority to impact us with bettering our skills. There are so many factors that have gone into becoming a more successful writer; however I will continue to make the appropriate adjustments to my future pieces to achieve the best of my intelligence of writing.
Animals are a crucial component in the life cycle; zoos aid animals to push to themselves to their fullest potential, and nurture them as if they were humans. On March 5, 2017, my class and I went to Elmwood Park Zoo to learn the importance of enrichment toys for these creatures. Exploring the zoo was thrilling; however, there were not many animals due to the cold climate. Some of the workers had brought in animals to help us better understand their extinction rates. For example, the workers had informed us that there are rare species of birds that have been injured; this includes leg or wings injuries. Throughout the service activity, materials such as card board, newspaper, string, and puzzle pieces were used to help create toys for animals
When I started this course I absolutely struggled with writing in particular. My third artifact consists of three documents “Thomas–Kilmann questionnaire” on conflict management styles, “Observer feedback sheet” which I received from my peer after my oral presentation and “The Competent Communicator graphic”. All three documents are part of Managerial Communications course. I am choosing these documents as an artifact because it was mandatory to use these documents as an artifact as well as they reflects my learning during the course and help me to determine my efficiency as a competent communicator.
The sun was shining, the sky was spotted with clouds, and the wind was whistling as it passed through the trees. Overall, it was the perfect day to visit the zoo. Smiling, happy children bounded beside me as I walked underneath the large, blue and yellow sign announcing “The Colorado Zoo.” As I walked onto the sidewalk, I looked out over the “habitats.” The big, colorful signs advertising the exotic animals “brought from all over the world!” Animals that were taken from their home, taken from their habitats, and taken to a world where they are put on display. Animals who are forced to live out their lives in zoos in unhealthy, degrading, and devastating ways.
