The presentation from United Way was very informing. This was my first time hearing about the concept of Alice. The presentation for me opens my eyes up to what is happen in the Orleans Parish. The fact that 40% of households in the parish are struggling is shocking. The presenter mention something as to almost 700,000 individuals are struggling, and those are just the stats of 2013. I feel like it may now have a significant increase. However, I feel like the governor of Louisiana have neglected the citizens in this state. Bobby Jindal had the chance to help many of the individuals that are struggling; however, he turned his back on them when they need him the most. For instance, the only thing that is growing is low wages jobs that are not even near most of the housing. …show more content…
The government goal is trying to get people off government assistance. As a government, how can people be motivated by low wages. Many people have to work two or more jobs just to provide for their families. I feel like issues like this causes individuals to have a negative attitude towards the government. The government goals do not align with the public goals. Also, both groups have two different values. Those values are different because of their lifestyle. For instance, former Governor Bobby Jindal did not try to understand that those under the poverty line need jobs that pay more than the current minimum wages. I think minimum wages has been the same for about ten years now. I feel like it’s time for a change. For people attitudes to change about the government, we need to see
United Way is a non-profit organization that helps improve the livelihood in local communities. I have been fortunate enough to see the impact United has provided from community donations and its funded agencies in El Paso. Hegel developed the Systems Theory in the 18th century and the best way to describe the organizations audience is in comparison to the organizations structure and function. University of Twente (2016) believes communication occurs among interdependent units that work together to adapt to an ever-changing environment. United Way of El Paso County strives address issues in areas of education, homelessness, and economical stability. I will talk about how the organization addresses these issues to their donors, agencies, and the families they support.
Nationwide government officials often wonder how this country is going to overcome unemployment, and the common misconception is through the provision of low wage jobs. By providing people with some source of income, congress believes millions will no longer depend on government aid. In actuality, however, providing minimum wage work is not going to solve such a drastic problem now, in the future, or at all for that matter. Minimum wage ($5.15), while serving at the socially acceptable pay standard, does not even compare with the nationwide ?living wage? of $10.18 (Ramisch). It is becoming increasingly more difficult to survive on such tragic wages, yet there is often little debate because it is money, and every little bit matters when it comes to paying bills.
I decided to write about how I felt regarding the federal government's involvement in controlling the minimum wage and that I felt they are disconnected in their understanding of the impacts on communities when they raise the minimum wage. I work for a manufacturing company in the U.S. and I understand wholeheartedly what the impact of salary increases due to our bottom line. In very competitive markets the difference between success and failure can be separated by the difference of only a few dollars per part, and while in other countries, their manufacturing bottom line is subsidized by their governments we are forced to generate profits the old-fashioned way through supply and demand. This is why I decided to take a stance in my persuasive essay and challenge the status quo of the Department of Labor and Wages. No longer should the federal government dictate a national minimum wage but should allow each state to establish their own minimum wage based on the economic condition of their counties and their state, as a whole.
There are 2 categories within the count sheltered, or living in homeless housing and unsheltered, meaning a car or tent, 18 individuals in the 2016 survey were considered unsheltered this count nearly doubled from the 10 unsheltered in 2015
United Way is committed to helping people in our community who are experiencing crisis due to homelessness, financial distress
By requiring people on welfare to work, and assisting them to get low-paying jobs if nothing else, the state and local governments give the people incentive to get better paying jobs and keep them. I read an article once that showed the correlation between government-assisted welfare workers and full-time permanent employment of those same workers later. I firmly believe that people will help and support themselves if given a decent chance. This country is founded on the idea of self-sufficiency. We are taught this in the public schools from the first day. We are trained not to cheat, not to steal answers from another person's paper, and not to depend on others to do our work for us. It seems to be an innate human quality that people want to rely on upon themselves and achieve goals on their own. When people who are down on their luck are given a helping hand, often they will move from
The debate is still going on about raising minimum wage, but most low income individuals have hope that the federal government will vote in favor of the raise. However, the upper class Americans believe the lower class Americans can do better without the raise because of their stereotypical thoughts they have about the lower class individuals such as drug habits, being alcoholics, and living off of government assistance. Not realizing that type of thinking is not good toward lower income families because there are some poverty struck families that are trying their best fighting for a better life, but it is hard with the cost of living going up every other day, yet the money they make is still the same. Remembering the crisis the federal government
In the United States alone, the amount of people in poverty is 14.5%. That equates to 45.3 million people in 2013. In a country like America, one of the world’s superpowers, it’s embarrassing to admit. But the main issue is to fix issues like these with the minimum wage and welfare. The minimum wage applies to workers who got a job whether because they were in school or because they had not gone to college and had no other option. Most of the country lives off as minimum wage workers as only 1% of the world’s population has a college degree. Minimum wage needs to be adjusted to modern inflation. But the minimum wage allegedly does not affect poverty at all says a large demographic and does not need to be adjusted. The minimum wage makes up a lot of the country and should be adjusted or modified to today’s standard of living.
Supporters may say that raising the wage of minimum wage would be the main solution to consider aiding in the economic struggle of poverty. 14.5 percent of Americans live below the poverty line. This is a result of major employment decreasing due to employers moving towards hiring more and more people that have at least an associate degree in that field of work, young adults starting to have children before they are financially stable, and tax laws seemingly always changing that deems unfit for low class citizens to pay. Though these are valid reasons to raise the minimum wage
When you see fully capable men or women asking for handouts or taking advantage of others accomplishments, it triggers frustration and anger but you can still go about with your daily life. When you see your favorite restaurants or establishments closed because they cannot up keep their workers’ wages that the state induced, now it becomes infuriating. Society tend to better their lives through trade skills, years of education, personal development, perseverance, and hard work in order to reach success. The moment we adopt new laws in order to meet the demands that minimum wage is not sufficient, is when we start seeing the economic collapse that will take tenfold the time to repair than it did to create. Adopting these new laws will influence
To start off, the minimum wage needs to be increased as soon as possible in order for it to compensate to the inflation of prices seen over the years. Prices are constantly on the rise and that is due to natural inflation that reflects the U.S. economy. However, what hasn’t been changing is the minimum wage. Currently, the minimum wage does not automatically adjust to inflated prices. Instead, for the wage to rightfully increase congress must pass new legislation for there to be a federal minimum wage increase to take place in the country (“Minimum Wage”). The problem here is seemingly apparent. Prices keep rising but the minimum wage still remains stagnant. This causes countless numbers of families to face a dip into the poverty level and worry no longer about being able to support and sustain their family. No parent should ever have to face a grim reality where there is seemingly no feasible hope for their children to live
Some of the individuals concerns are: it would decrease the number of jobs available, increase poverty, and increase price of essentials needed for life. The number of jobs available would not decrease if the minimum wage raised. If the minimum wage raised to $10.10 an hour the economy would rise, resulting in the creation of 85,000 new jobs. There continues to be minuscule evidence of a negative result between raising the minimum wage and employment. The same principle goes along with increasing poverty. Raising the minimum wage to $10.10 would reduce the number of individuals in poverty by 4.6 million. Most of the individuals in poverty live in rural areas that the government does not see while urban areas receive government programs assistance. The way to reduce poverty in rural areas to raise the minimum wage. Having a higher minimum wage would go further in the country as a whole rather than just urban areas. An increase in the price of essentials has been happening for years while the minimum wage has stayed at $7.25. The minimum wage being raised will not have a substantial effect on increases in prices for everyday necessities. Also, the minimum wage is not inventoried into inflation, the purchasing power has dropped substantially. According to ProCon, “inflation indexing guarantees low-wage workers a wage that keeps the pace with the rising cost of goods and
There are numerous organizationsthat are present in our society, be it private, public or voluntary organizations but one thing that is common from these organizations is that they all have missions and goals set for them to achieve. This paper will be discussing an organization called United Way.
There’s a very simple solution to a increasing poverty level, a raise in the federal minimum wage. People who live at or below poverty level did not have the opportunity to develop job skills, build an education, or invest in financial assets. The little opportunity given to the low poverty populate is due to the absence of a low income, and how many of them could only afford a minimum wage job. If an increase of minimum wage was given, many low income workers could develop skills, that could help them progress in their career. Once these workers succeed in their career, one could hope that they will go on a earn a education, or build their financial assets. These financial assets include loans, savings accounts, and the purchasing of houses or other expensive items. An investment of these financial assets will led to an overall boost in the surrounding economy and crime rates in the area. A federal wage increase has many benefits compared to cons, these benefits include: helping the life of low income workers, who make up most of America, and the overall boost of the economy and the area surrounding it.
Not only is minimum wage a major social issue that needs to be addressed in order to help appease income inequality, but also education is a huge social concern. The reason this is such a concern is because families living in low income housing neighborhoods attend low income schools and are unable to rise above, because their schools do not have the same quality funding as high income neighborhood schools or private ones. The low income schools do not have proper funding and put the students at an immediate disadvantage compared to high income neighborhood schools and private schools. I personally believe if the Federal Government supplies public schools with more than just 15% of their budget, students would not be at such a disadvantage and have a greater chance to be motivated to attend college and hopefully obtain a degree to earn a high wage job. In my education classes the teachers place a huge emphasis on making sure students are getting full educations. Meaning students start in kindergarten or a pre-kindergarten program and finish high school in order to benefit society and not bring society down. The fact is the earnings of high school graduates have grown “more rapidly, so that the gap between dropout and graduate earnings expanded over time,” even if they do not attend college it is so important for students to graduate from high school so the inequality does not increase even more (Becker 1). Additionally, if
