LBGTQIA+ students are missing school, throughout the United States, because they do no feel safe within their school settings. (The Trevor Project, 2016). There are not many resources offered to students in Broome Country outside of the school setting. The United Way’s Mission Statement states: “We all have a stake in what befalls our fellow man. We all benefit when a child succeeds in school…” (United Way, 2017). By missing school it hinders a student’s ability to succeed in the school setting. By opening a call center through Promise Zone at Johnson City High School, this will offer an added support for students. The call center will be open to students 24 hours a day outside of school hours, and be run by teacher volunteers, Promise Zone
For my Professional Engagement placement, I was assigned to a UNSW ASPIRE program school, Granville Boys High School (GBHS), an single-sex government school situated in South Western Sydney. Due to its geographical location in one of the most multicultural regions in Sydney, with 95 per cent of the school’s total of 488 enrolments classified as Language Background Other Than English (LBOTE) students. Most students attending the school live in the surrounding Holroyd/Auburn area, with a large majority of students from Arabic or Muslim backgrounds. The Harlem Children’s Zone is a community based education system started by Geoffrey Canada. His main goal with this program was to close the achievement gap between affluent and low-income children in Harlem and ensure that every student that attends the HCZ also attends college. His charter school, referred to as “ The Promise Academy,” is unique as it provides a high-performing academic program supplemented with a variety of social services including parenting classes, support system for former HCZ students who have enrolled in college, fitness programs, community centers, and an onsite-medical clinic. Children living in the inner city are historically low-performing students, because they are not worried about their grade on a test like
The organization I will focus my assessment on is Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). SNHU is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution with more than 70,000 online students, where I work as a specialized Military Academic Advisor. Southern New Hampshire University, founded in 1932 as the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science, has evolved into one of the fastest growing and most dynamic private, nonprofit universities in the nation (About us, 2017). There are many departments and programs at SNHU, but I will focus on my position as a fully online Military Academic Advisor. The online programs fall under the College of Continuing and Online Education (COCE). I began training in October 2016, and have retained a lot of the latest information and built on that with continued training and mentorship. Our mission says “We exist to make high-quality education accessible and affordable for all. Through our innovative culture and unwavering commitment to student success, we empower students to transform their lives and the lives of those around them” (About us, 2017).
Despite the best intentions of the famed civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. to promote non-violent change the civil rights movement of today is now one of violence and hate. The grass-root organization was founded by three Black women and consists of 26 chapters across the United States. The women leaders Garza, Cullors, and Tometi were passionately steadfast in their plight to end current racism and social injustices against the Black community. However, although the legitimacy of the group’s plight is valid, and many Americans sympathize with their cause and purpose, many do not agree with the group’s strategies of solving crimes against the Black community. The hatred and violent practices by the “Black Lives Matter” groups have caused many that would support the cause to turn against retarding the progression of the civil rights
Loyola University Chicago has various opportunities that help engage students in different activities that can help them raise awareness of the outside world environment. Loyola’s mission statement states that “We are Chicago 's Jesuit Catholic university- a diverse community seeking God in all things and working to expand knowledge in the service of humanity through learning, justice, and faith.” Under this statement, students are reminded of engaging themselves with the community and provide service that can help the community and demonstrate God’s faith over all purposes. Through the commitment of “learning, justice, and faith”, as a student, I am inspired to do more as a person for the community. As an international student, I am very grateful of being able to participate in the Engaged Learning Community of ISOM (Information Systems Operations Management), and earn more knowledge and awareness of the case study provided in class.

Currently, I am student teaching at Alfred E. Zampella PS #27 School in the district of Jersey City. The school is located in a busy city, next to John F. Kennedy St. which is especially busy in the morning and during rush hour. This results in several late students on a day to day basis. On the other hand, this school is also highly accessible and as a little over a thousand students. The school has grade levels from kindergarten to 8th grade, and has a mix of general, special, and inclusion education classrooms. Typically, families that enroll their students into this school are of lower-middle socio-economic class, and tend to be majority Hispanic, Indian, and African American, with few Caucasians and Asians. This school provides a variety of special programs for their ESL students and special need students. Students may be offered speech language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, ESL programs, reading recovery, and counseling.

Grant Elementary School’s mission is to create and build an integrated learning community based upon the principles of dignity, competence, individual achievement and preparing students for the future. My role at Grant School is to assist the Guidance Counselor in providing individual and group counseling to “at-risk” students who need additional support in an effort to address any barriers that interfere with success at school. Grant is a one-site school district located five miles southeast of Redding CA in the community of Centerville. The school serves approximately 125 preschool students and 655 K-8 students. The Centerville area is a rural setting featuring a real estate market with housing variety and available acreage. Many professional families choose to reside within the Grant attendance boundaries because of Grant’s high academic standards. Grant also attracts students from outside the attendance area. Over 57% of the children enrolled at Grant live outside the district’s boundaries. 79% of the student population is Caucasian, 9% Hispanic, 6% two or more races, 3% Asian, 2% American Indian and .5% African American, and 16% students participate in a free or reduced-cost lunch program. Counseling services were recently implemented this year at Grant School as a result of funding made available through Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).
