The University of Chicago is located in Hyde Park and serves the South Side of Chicago, including the neighborhoods of Hyde Park, Oakland, North Kenwood, and Woodlawn. This area of Chicago is known to be diverse and culturally developed. Although, it is a lively community, the South side of Chicago is a poverty-stricken community. The community suffers from many health disparities due to low income, limited access to health care, unemployment, violence, and limited education ("Community," 2016). Around the late 1800s, the University of Chicago became involved with medicine and opened a facility for patients in the year 1927 ("A Brief History," 2016). The University of Chicago Hospital grew and began to merge with other organizations, such as Crippled Children. Turner was a young teenager who was shot in a drive by near the University of Chicago hospital. He was turned down from the hospital because they had no trauma center as he was in a serious condition and needed to be treated in a trauma center. The nearest one was Northwestern Hospital, which was much further than U of C Hospital. He was pronounced dead on the way to Northwestern Hospital (ABC7 Chicago, 2015). Being an area with a high rate of violence, the South Side needs a trauma center to meet the growing needs of its population. The University of Chicago hospital is currently in the process of planning to add a trauma center for this reason. Many residents have been protesting and campaigning for action to be taken in building the center, but it has not been easy to make a change mainly due to financial issues.
